1. Cover Reveal: The Evolution of Mara Dyer (#2) by Michelle Hodkin

It's the cover we've all been waiting for since last year's stunning The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin.

If you need a reminder:

A thing of beauty

After many minutes of rabid refreshing, Simon and Schuster finally unveiled book 2, The Evolution of Mara Dyer (hitting shelves October 23 aka TOO FAR AWAY):

First of all, YAY they kept the same theme and photographer! The underwater theme is dark and haunting, just like the first book. I also love how they seem to be images in a sequence. It has evolved (cough) from them holding each other, to them being ripped apart but straining to hang on.

I also kind of love how you never get to see their faces. It keeps the air of mystery, and is also fitting since "Mara Dyer"is writing her story under a pseudonym (to protect the guilty?)

I also love the shift in color. Book one was green, and book two is blue... which seems darker and sadder to me.

Also, in case you missed it in all the cover excitement, there's a synopsis on Goodreads!

Two days after Mara walks into a police station in Miami at the close of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, she is committed for psychiatric treatment for what her parents believe is a mental breakdown. But what seems like a hallucination to everyone else is a chilling reality for Mara. Someone from her past has discovered her strange, disturbing secret and that someone wants her to pay. But she's about to discover that the price is more than she can bear.

Dark and thrilling, suspenseful and passionate, The Evolution of Mara Dyer will have readers breathlessly turning pages to find out what will become of Mara Dyer next.

Yes yes yes! Gimme gimme gimme! The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer was my most anticipated read last year, and The Evolution of Mara Dyer holds that title this year. This series is AH-MAZ-ING, and if you haven't read book one yet, what on earth are you waiting for?!

He’s saved her. He’s loved her. He’s killed for her.

Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn’t protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids, so he’s never stopped trying to protect her from everything else. It doesn’t matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another—Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who’s ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders Archer’s committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn’t get what she wants… And what she wants is Evan’s death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

3. Review: Saving June by Hannah Harrington

Release Date: November 22, 2011
Series: Standalone
Publisher: Harlequin
Preorder: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

June was always the golden girl, with the perfect grades, perfect friends, perfect boyfriend, perfect life. Or so it seemed. Harper has always lived in her perfect sister's looming shadow -- until, suddenly, she wasn't there. When Harper finds June's lifeless body and the empty bottle of pills, all the truths she thought she knew come crashing down around her. With nothing left to lose, she sets out in search of answers, travelling cross country with June's ashes to fulfill her sister's lifelong wish -- to see California. But Harper may not like the answers that she finds. June wasn't the only one with demons, and the secrets of Harper's unlikely companions, her best friend Laney and an evasive boy with a mysterious connection to June, threaten to tear her world apart.

Saving June by Hannah Harrington is a bittersweet but surprisingly hopeful look at loss and living. Perhaps more accurately titled "Saving Harper," readers are shown Harper's growth into her own life, forced into the spotlight by the loss of her sister's overwhelming glow. Harper is dark, edgy and cynical, a facade built to be her sister's opposite in every way, but which has grown into a second skin. Her snark is surprisingly endearing, especially after seeing the neglect of her parents and holier-than-thou criticism from her aunt that torment her at home. It's clear that Harper's brashness and rashness are a defensive mechanism, and it's easy to see the pain she tries to hide. Though she and June had the same quibbles that plague most sibling rivalries, they were still sisters and shared a bond that even their parents couldn't completely understand -- and that loss echoes to the very last page.

The road trip to California is a fun and effective, if a little unbelievable (a teenage girl taking off across the country with a guy she doesn't know -- and her parents are only mildly concerned?) method of showing Harper's lesson in living. The places they visit range from the bizarre to the beautiful, the wild to the wistful, and Harper grows as a person with each leg of their journey. Readers will find themselves itching to hit the road with each new adventure, whether it be camping at Fridgehenge and swing dancing in an underground Jazz club or throwing punches in a bar brawl before befriending an indie band. Saving June is vicarious living at its finest.

Giving voice to the things the characters themselves can't quite express, Jake's expansive music collection sets the ever-changing tone of the novel. The music takes meaning from each experience and ties together the vast and various episodes of their journey. Jake is the perfect counterpart to Harper. He's just as damaged and abrasive, and their cons

4. Cover Art Revealed (4)

I've been collecting these for about a month now, so we have lots of covers to see today!

Courtney Summers revealed the cover for her new novel This is Not a Test! Check it out:

Coming June 19, 2012!

It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up.

As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, everyone’s motivations to survive begin to change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life–and death–inside.

When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

I loooove the blood spatter in the corner! I also love how her hair is falling over her face. There's something kind of disturbing about her identity being erased like that -- perfect for the themes of the novel.

Lisa Desrochers also revealed the cover for the final book in her Personal Demons trilogy, Last Rite. Check it out:

Coming May 8, 2012!

What happens when you can't outrun Hell—or trust the ones you love?

I think this cover is gorgeous. I love how it's divided down the middle, light and dark, heaven and hell,

7. Trailer Thursday: Extended Edition

I've been gathering trailers as they appear across the web, but I hadn't found time to post them yet. Since I'm still trying to get back in the swing of things, I thought today would be a good day to share several trailers for new or upcoming releases.

Coming October 25, 2011

The Iron Knight (Iron Fey #4) by Julie Kagawa: This is a great trailer for a great book. I read it a while back and this absolutely captures the adventure and the intrigue and the darkness of the story. It's so professional too! It looks like a movie or game trailer. I do wish there were voiceovers instead of just type though -- I'm a fan of voiceovers, and who doesn't want to hear Ash's voice? Exactly. But what really seals the deal is Grim at the end. I love me some Grim.

What do you think? Are you excited for this continuation of Ash's story? (You can also check out this Behind the Scenes video of the Iron Knight cover shoot!)

Coming November 1, 2011

Dark Eden by Patrick Carman: I'm really excited to read this one -- especially after watching the trailer. How chilling was that? Those look like torture chambers! And who is the creepy old man that keeps flashing across the screen? I think this definitely conveys the tone of the book. I got chills a few times. The only thing I would change is once again to have voiceovers! Voiceovers make a trailer.

What do you think? Have you checked out the nifty Dark Eden app?

Coming November 29, 2011

Legend by Marie Lu: Yay voiceovers! I love the back and forth between the two points-of-view in the trailer -- I hope the book alternates as well. I also love the very sterile and foreboding images of the "Republic". It definitely gives you a sense of the dystopian element. And mad props to Marie Lu for giving us a fierce female soldier,

8. Waiting on Wednesday: The Demon of Renaissance Drive by Elizabeth Reuter

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to highlight upcoming releases we're anxiously awaiting!

The Demon of Renaissance Drive by Elizabeth Reuter

Release Date: November 18, 2011
Publisher: JournalStone

For one of Hell’s preeminent succubi, life should be sweet...and it is, if you like sulfuric air, political minefields, and crashing boredom. After six thousand years the succubus Annabelle finds relief from her dull life in the companionship of a damned soul named Harry, until the Kings of Hell decide they disapprove of Annabelle and Harry’s bond.

Unfortunately, even escaping to Earth isn’t enough to keep the pair safe. Somewhere between dodging a dangerously inquisitive psychologist and fighting Satanists out for Harry’s life, Annabelle realizes running is no longer an option. She must return home and make a stand.

Whether she survives or not, at least she isn’t bored anymore...

This is different from my usual fare, but I've been thinking I need to mix things up with more adult novels. For some reason, this one in particular caught my eye. I love the description of hell -- "sulfuric air, political minefields, and crashing boredom" -- it sounds like excellent worldbuilding, not just the fires and brimstone you so often see. I'm also intrigued by how she manages to escape Hell with a damned soul in tow. That can't be easy -- and it reminds me a bit of the Orpheus myth. I just always enjoy some Heaven and Hell mythology, and this sounds like an exciting read with a fierce her

10. Guest Post: Mary Lindsey's Worst Writing Mishap (Shattered Souls)

Mary's writing is a natural expression of her love of reading and a fascination with the flexibility of the human imagination. Books make the impossible possible.

Prior to attending University of Houston Law School, Mary received a B.A. in English Literature with a minor in Drama from the University of Houston. She has taught drama and playwriting in a large public high school and English in a private school. Currently, Mary teaches acting to children and teens at a private studio in Houston, Texas.

She is represented by Ammi-Joan Paquette of the Erin Murphy Literary Agency.

Mary lives in Houston with her husband, three kids, two dogs, her daughter's pet rats, an Australian Bearded Dragon and dozens of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. (The roaches are long story—don't ask.)

Worst Writing Mishap

I grew up performing in theatre, so I’m pretty immune to embarrassment. If I do something silly, I blush, apologize, and brush it off. That’s why this post is sort of hard for me.

There are lots of things I’ve done that qualify as writing mishaps: not changing the name of the agent in my query, thanking the wrong agent for the full request, sending the wrong verson of my manuscript. All of these are mishaps, but they don’t stick with me. I make mistakes. We all do. They don’t faze me too much.

The writing mishap that I’ve had a hard time shaking is one that happened entirely by coincidence.

I wrote Shattered Souls four years ago and entered an early version of the manuscript in a contest. At the time, the opening scene was on the beach with Zak, Lenzi, and Zak’s stoner friends, Greg and Cynthia. I modeled this pair of friends after some folks I knew in real life.

The characters of Greg and Cynthia were absolute losers. You know the kind. They work only to support the next session of partying and mooch off other folks. Overall, they’re worthless.

Well, one of the contest judges wrote a note in the manuscript admonishing me for these characters. “If this is a shout out to Cynthia Leitich Smith and her husband, Greg, it is not tasteful or appropriate.”

I was mortified. I knew who Cynthia Leitich Smith was, but had no idea her husband was named Greg. Heck, at the time, I didn’t even know she was a fellow Texan. Why on earth would I give them a “shout out” by making them despicable? Way to make friends, right? Ugh.

Of course, I changed the names right away. It’s all irrelevant now, because the entire scene was cut along with Cynthia and Greg, but it was so embarrassing to me that the judge thought I was that rude. I was grateful though. What if it had gone out there like that and somebody else thought the same thing?

Since then, I’ve met Cynthia and told her about her stoner counterparts in my early draft. If you know

11. Cover Art Revealed (3)

On Friday, EW.com revealed the cover art for Insurgent, the sequel to Veronica Roth's bestselling debut Divergent. Check it out:

Coming May 2012!

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

I LOVED Divergent, so I'm really excited for this sequel. I really love the cover motif they have going on -- it doesn't make sense until you read the book and then you go "OHHHH". This is really pretty -- I love the swirling tree, even if I'm not sure what it means.

Alethea Kontis recently revealed the cover for her upcoming novel Enchanted. Check it out:

Coming May 8, 2012!

It isn’t easy being the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true.

When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.

12. Signed, Sealed, Delivered (1)

Frequently, authors (and Publishers Weekly) announce upcoming new series loooooong before there is pretty cover art or even a firm release date -- which makes it hard to include them for Waiting on Wednesday. However, their teasery descriptions are so exciting that I just have to share them. So, I'm going to start posting a roundup of exciting new book deals. Since this is the first one, I'm going to include a few that were announced a while back. (Click the titles to add them on Goodreads)

Coming December 27, 2011!

Love and Leftovers by Sarah Tregay

My wish
is to fall
cranium over Converse
in dizzy, daydream-worthy
love.

When her parents split, Marcie is dragged from Idaho to a family summerhouse in New Hampshire. She leaves behind her friends, a group of freaks and geeks called the Leftovers, including her emo-rocker boyfriend, and her father.

By the time Labor Day rolls around, Marcie suspects this "vacation" has become permanent. She starts at a new school where a cute boy brings her breakfast and a new romance heats up. But understanding love, especially when you've watched your parents' affections end, is elusive. What does it feel like, really? can you even know it until you've lost it?

Love and Leftovers is a beautifully written story of one girl’s journey navigating family, friends, and love, and a compelling and sexy read that teens will gobble up whole.

This sounds like a cute and fun read, a la Sarah Dessen or Stephanie Perkins. I need more contemporary in my reading diet, and who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned love story? Honestly, this synopsis had me with the opening poem. If that bright, snappy style is indicative of the rest of the book, I am all in.

What are you waiting on this week?

This awesome button was made by Lindsi at BSAOT.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Today's Top Ten are the books at the top of our TBR for Fall 2011. This is going to be hard -- a ton of great books are coming out this fall! This year, the Fall Equinox is September 23 and the Winter Solstice is December 22, so I'll be listing books released between those dates.

1. Clockwork Prince (Infernal Devices #2) by Cassandra Clare (December 6): Clockwork Angel is one of my favorite books, and it ended on a total cliffhanger. I'm lusting after Will er-- the sequel so hard.

2. The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff (November 15): I loved the dark vibe of Brenna's debut The Replacement, and this book sounds even more AMAZEBALLS.

3. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins (September 29): OBVIOUSLY! Who didn't love Anna?

4. Darker Still by Leanna Renee Hieber (November 1): "The Picture of Dorian Gray meets Pride and Prejudice, with a dash of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Sold!

5. The Faerie Ring by Kiki Hamilton (September 27): Victorian London + Faeries = Love.

6. My Beating Teenage Heart by C. K. Kelly Martin (September 27): I find books about the afterlife fascinating and, more often than not, heartbreaking. This book sounds beautiful.

7. The Always War by Margaret Peterson Haddix (November 15): War always provides a lot of subject matter, and this sounds like a very different kind of dystopian.

19. Guest Post: Amber Argyle's Teenage Garage Sale (Witch Song)

Amber Argyle grew up with three brothers on a cattle ranch in the Rocky Mountains. She spent hours riding horses, roaming the mountains, and playing in her family’s creepy barn. This environment fueled her imagination for writing her debut novel.

She has worked as a short order cook, janitor, and staff member in a mental institution. All of which has given her great insight into the human condition and has made for some unique characters.

She received her bachelor’s degree in English and Physical Education from Utah State University.

She currently resides in Utah with her husband and three small children.

Today Amber's stopping by to tell us about what we might find in a garage sale from her teen years.

Teenage Garage Sale:

I had to pull out my scrap book and cedar chest to compile this list. Why do I still have some (some as in not all) of this crap? Anyway, here’s what I came up with:

Sony Walkman CD Player for those of you who still don’t have an iPod: $1

20. Waiting on Wednesday: The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to highlight upcoming releases we're anxiously awaiting!

Coming February 7, 2012!

The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

When Cameron Post’s parents die suddenly in a car crash, her shocking first thought is relief. Relief she’ll never have to tell them that, hours earlier, she had been kissing a girl.

But that relief soon turns to heartbreak, as Cam is forced to move in with her conservative aunt Ruth. She knows that from this point on, her life will forever be different. Survival in Miles City, Montana, means blending in and not making waves, and Cam becomes an expert at this—especially at avoiding any questions about her sexuality.

Then Coley Taylor moves to town. Beautiful pickup-driving Coley is a perfect cowgirl with the perfect boyfriend to match. To Cam’s surprise, she and Coley become best friends—while Cam secretly dreams of something more. Just as that starts to seem like a real possibility, her secret is exposed. Ultrareligious Aunt Ruth takes drastic action to “fix” her niece, bringing Cam face-to-face with the cost of denying her true self—even if she’s not quite sure who that is.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a stunning and unforgettable literary debut about discovering who you are and finding the courage to live life according to your own rules.

This sounds like a sweet read that simultaneously deals with real issues -- her parents death, her sexuality, her aunt's ignorance and horrifying "fix". Cam's aunt sounds so much like a lot of close-minded people I know that I think this book will feel very authentic to me -- and I'm excited to see how it turns out (Cam's got to br

23. Waiting on Wednesday: Try Not to Breathe by Jennifer R. Hubbard

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to highlight upcoming releases we're anxiously awaiting!

Coming January 19, 2012!

Try Not to Breathe by Jennifer R. Hubbard

A dark and provocative novel from the author of The Secret Year

Ryan spends most of his time alone at the local waterfall because it’s the only thing that makes him feel alive. He’s sixteen, post-suicidal, and trying to figure out what to do with himself after a stint in a mental hospital. Then Nicki barges into his world, brimming with life and energy, and asking questions about Ryan’s depression that no one else has ever been brave enough—or cared enough—to ask. Ryan isn’t sure why he trusts Nicki with his darkest secrets, but that trust turns out to be the catalyst that he desperately needs to start living again.

Jennifer R. Hubbard has created a riveting story about a difficult but important subject.

This novel just sounds amazing. You see a lot of YA novels about teens dealing with their best friend's suicide, or contemplating their own -- but I don't think I've seen any "post-suicidal" stories. It sounds like this novel is about facing the dark side of life, the things we're sometimes afraid to talk about. There's just something about this synopsis that immediately drew me in. I will definitely be reading this one the day it hits shelves.

The Secret Year is sitting in my TBR. Have you read it? Are you a fan of Jennifer Hubbard?
