1. #rockthedrop This October!

Hey, readergirlz! We have a #rockthedrop update for you, courtesy of Lorie Ann Grover:

YALSA has decided to discontinue Support Teen Literature Day in April. We've enjoyed celebrating the day for 8 years by rocking the drop through Operation Teen Book Drop. We've donated thousands of books to teens in hospitals and those on Tribal Lands. We've left young adult books around the world to be found by happy readers. Well done, all!

SO WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE ANYWAY! We are going to #RocktheDrop in October, on Friday, the 14th, of Teen Read Week. Deal? For now, stash those books to the side, and we'll collectively drop them together next fall. We'll give you a heads up as the time approaches. Let's get those donation piles taller in the meantime.

Be ready to #RocktheDrop on October 14th, 2016. It's going to be a great addition to Teen Read Week. Ready, set, go!

3. #tothegirls2016

Last year, author Courtney Summers posted:

"I write about girls.

"I write about girls because every girl deserves the opportunity to pick up a book and see herself in its pages.

"I write about girls because girls, and their stories, matter.

"It's my way of letting them know."

On April 14th, 2015, she posted this with the hashtag #tothegirls to tell girls all over the world that they are seen, heard, and loved. People all over the world chimed in on social media, posting messages of support and encouragement, sharing thoughts and quotes both funny and profound.

Today, January 21st, it's time to spread the word again. Use the hashtag #tothegirls2016 along with your personal message of support and encouragement on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, your blog, your vlog, wherever you see fit. Write a note on your wipe-off board on the door of your dorm room or stick a Post-It note on your family's fridge or bathroom mirror. Share the message, and share the love.

From Courtney's article today in The Guardian:

Sometimes, I think of my novels as letters to their readers.

The difficult, often hard-to-like female protagonists and the particular set of challenges they face may change from book to book, but the underlying message - the heart of the story - is always the same: whatever you're going through and however you feel, you’re not alone.

One of fiction's greatest powers is its ability to reveal the parts of ourselves we're most afraid to show; both the ugly and the beautiful. When a reader sees their secrets on the page, there's a chance it can make a world of difference for them. It can lessen the weight of those secrets to the point the reader can breathe just a little bit easier and to the point, even, the reader might be able to say their secrets out loud.

Sometimes, saying a secret out loud changes a life.

Sometimes, saying a secret out loud saves it.

I'm not the first person to express this and I won't be the last: a book can be a lifeline.

You are awesome.
You can do this.

5. Ballou Book Fair

Every year, Colleen from Chasing Ray and Guys Lit Wire sets up a special book fair connected to Ballou Senior High School in Washington, D.C. In Colleen's own words:

Every year, Guys Lit Wire lends its platform to host a book fair for Ballou. Working with librarian Melissa Jackson and her students, we build a wish list of titles they need and then ask the internet to buy a book (or 2) (or more) and send some joy their way. It's quick and it's easy and for book lovers in particular, it's a no-brainer.

We all know that books matter to kids, and we all know why buying books for teens who do not have wide access to them is a smart investment in our world's future. For Ballou, the school fund for book purchases is not large and as a Washington Post article showed earlier this year, the dollars for books in DC often go to wealthier neighborhoods. Also, when they get money schools like Ballou are often not able to purchase the sort of fun or seemingly frivolous titles that teens would really to read.

That is where the Guys Lit Wire Book Fair for Ballou comes in. We buy the books the kids ask for, plain and simple.

The mailing address is already set-up for checkout and there are nearly 400 books to choose from with a price range that starts under $5. We do hope you will find a book that you want to send to Ballou and help us fill their shelves with the titles these kids want so very much to read.

Here's the wishlist: http://tinyurl.com/BookFairforBallou

Please share the link to the wishlist as well as the link to Colleen's post at GLW via your blogs and social media to help spread the word.

Don't let it stop there. If you know of a library, school, shelter, or hospital that's in great need of books and other items, give back. Rally up your co-workers, patrons, students, and friends, gather donated items (new or gently used), and donate them to your chosen organization or charity. Share your good fortune and good spirits with others.

7. Cemetery Girl, Book Two: Inheritance by Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden

Cemetery Girl: Inheritance
Last year, I devoured the first Cemetery Girl graphic novel, The Pretenders, in one sitting. I am not always "into" stories in which the main character has amnesia - I am impatient and want to know what happened to the character, and I also really wish I could help them/heal them/restore their memories immediately - but the quick pace of this story offered intrigue and action rather than hemming and hawing, plus I liked the full-color illustrations...and I still felt the urge to help the protagonist and learn more about her.

Today sees the release of Book Two in the Cemetery Girl trilogy, Inheritance. Here's the cover summary:

She calls herself Calexa Rose Dunhill. She has been living - hiding out - in Dunhill Cemetery ever since someone left her there to die. She has no idea who wants her dead or why, but she isn't about to wait around for her would-be killer to finish the job.

Despite her self-imposed isolation, Calexa’s ability to see spirits - and the memories she receives from them - guarantees she'll never be alone, even among the deceased. The only living people she allows herself to interact with are Kelner, the cemetery's cantankerous caretaker, and Lucinda Cameron, an elderly woman who lives in an old Victorian house across the street. With their friendship, Calexa has regained a link to the world beyond tombstones and mausoleums.

Until the night she witnesses a murder that shatters her life - a life now under a police microscope - as their investigation threatens to uncover Calexa’s true identity...

Cemetery Girl: Inheritance was written by Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden and illustrated by Don Kramer.

It's time for a new Remy Chandler novel! Here's a sneak peek of A DEAFENING SILENCE IN HEAVEN by Thomas E. Sniegoski, now available in bookstore everywhere:

He was once known as the angel Remiel. But, generations ago, Boston PI Remy Chandler renounced Heaven and chose to live on Earth, hiding among us humans, fighting to save our souls...

Remy Chandler is hovering on the brink of death, surrounded by friends who are trying to ward off those who would take advantage of his vulnerability. Unbeknownst to them, the greatest threat to Remy is one they can’t fight - God himself. The Almighty dispatches Remy far beyond their reach, to an alternate universe where there has been an apocalyptic catastrophe: the Unification.

Only as he hunts down the source of this calamity, it becomes clearer and clearer that the person responsible for the tragedy may have been none other than Remy himself.

And while he searches for a way to stop his world from following in the footsteps of the doomed alternate reality, enemies are massing in his universe. For the Unification is at hand and, this time, Remy may be powerless to affect its outcome...

12. Dead Ringers by Christopher Golden

Hey horror fans: Make sure you put Dead Ringers by Christopher Golden on your to-read list. The book is due out from St. Martin's Press this November. Here's the premise:

When Tess Devlin runs into her ex-husband Nick on a Boston sidewalk, she's furious at him for pretending he doesn't know her. She calls his cell to have it out with him, only to discover that he's in New Hampshire with his current girlfriend. But if Nick's in New Hampshire...who did she encounter on the street?

Frank Lindbergh's dreams have fallen apart. He wanted to get out of the grim neighborhood where he'd grown up and out of the shadow of his alcoholic father. Now both his parents are dead and he's back in his childhood home, drinking too much himself. As he sets in motion his plans for the future, he's assaulted by an intruder in his living room...an intruder who could be his twin.

In an elegant hotel, Tess will find mystery and terror in her own reflection. Outside a famed mansion on Beacon Hill, people are infected with a diabolical malice...while on the streets, an eyeless man, dressed in rags, searches for a woman who wears Tess's face.

Dead Ringers will be available November 3rd, 2015. In the meantime, check out Christopher Golden's newest novel, Tin Men, as well as my favorite standalone novel by Golden, The Boys Are Back in Town.

13. The Raven's Child by Thomas E. Sniegoski, art by Tom Brown

The Raven's Child written by Thomas E. Sniegoski with art by Tom Brown flies into bookstores today!

A mesmerizing dark world filled with monsters, where humanity's only hope lies in the bravery of one woman...

When the Throng came, the human race never stood a chance. The monsters were simply too strong, too numerous. It only took a few months for them to take over and leave the few poor souls who survived cowering in terror for years to come.

But even the monsters fear something: the dark goddess known as the Raven's Child. Legend says that she alone is destined to destroy the Throng and free those under their cruel power.

And whoever wields her name and image could become the bane of the Throng and an inspiration to humankind - even if she were only a young woman, like Carissa Devin, who has vowed to reclaim the world for the human race, no matter what the cost...

15. Tin Men by Christopher Golden

Christopher Golden's novel Tin Men will be hitting stores this June - and it's going to hit hard. While I can't say much for the sake of spoilers, I can tell you the mini-summary that the publisher is offering:

Brad Thor meets Avatar in this timely military thriller for the drone age, which spins the troubles of today into the apocalypse of tomorrow. A rocket ride of a read packed with high action, cutting-edge technology, and global politics, Tin Men begins with the end of the world as we know it and takes off from there.

I love sci-fi stories that are based in science and technology, stories that present us with possible, plausible situations that stir up society as we know it. Hello, Black Mirror. Oh, how I adore thee, Twilight Zone. And you all know how much I love Christopher Golden's writing. So of course I can't wait until Tin Men is released - even though I hope none of them attack my home.

Bonus points for those willing to discuss the various Cybermen storylines from Doctor Who with me. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Tin Men by Christopher Golden will be available June 23rd, 2015. Check out the awesome reviews it has received. (Yay, Publishers Weekly!)

17. The Menagerie series by Christopher Golden and Thomas E. Sniegoski

Looking for a new series to add to your e-bookshelf? You can now get all four books of The Menagerie series by Christopher Golden and Thomas E. Sniegoski on your Kindle via Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk!

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- this series rocks! If you like X-Men and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, you'll enjoy the mix of mischievous, powerful characters that make up The Menagerie: each legendary character has distinct abilities and mystical, mythical, and/or literary origins. Christopher Golden and Thomas E. Sniegoski have taken various characters well-known from literature and mythology and made them their own. They've got Eve (yes, that Eve - who became a vampire after she fell from grace), Ceridwen, and Doyle (what's up, Sherlock?), among others.

Again, there are four books in the series, which you can get separately or all at once. Trust me, you're going to want to have the entire series on hand once you start the first one so you can read them back-to-back.

Let me know which character or story is your favorite in the comments below.

If you cannot see the media player embedded above, click here to listen to the sample track at SoundCloud.

GraphicAudio has released their first graphic novel adaptation - and it's CEMETERY GIRL Book One: The Pretenders by Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden. Double cool! I loved the original book, and the audio sample released by the publisher (see above) immediately sets the stage for the story's location and feel. Kudos to Emlyn McFarland, who plays the main character, Calexa, and to the sound designers and producers.

20. World of Payne on its way from Tom Sniegoski and Frank Cho

As revealed at Comic Con, then reported in Comic Book Resources, Tom Sniegoski is writing World of Payne, which he co-created with Frank Cho. The story centers around a psychic private investigator named Lockwood Payne, who is actually a modern day sorcerer from an ancient society of witches and wizards and his strange misadventures in the world of the occult and unrealities. Along the way, he's helped by his ever-loyal and unflappable friend, Doctor Hurt, an urgent care doctor in the strip mall next door to Payne's office, and the beautiful Michelle, a witch-in-training.

The series will be told in a hybrid format, mixing traditional comic book storytelling with prose elements. Look for the first volume, World of Payne: Book 0 - Ghost Dog, in Spring 2015. Check out these preview pictures! Click thumbnails below for full-sized images.

21. Christopher Golden Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Publication

For immediate release

GOLDEN CELEBRATES 20th ANNIVERSARY
New York Times #1 Bestselling Author Christopher Golden Celebrates a Milestone

Of Saints and Shadows by Christopher Golden It all started with Of Saints and Shadows, a book which helped lay the groundwork for the genre we now call urban fantasy. Christopher Golden’s debut novel kickstarted a critically-acclaimed career that is still going strong two decades later.

Since the publication of his first novel in 1994, Golden has received accolades from Stephen King, George R.R. Martin, Peter Straub, Clive Barker, Charlaine Harris, Graham Joyce, The Boston Globe, New York Public Library, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and many more.  The #1 New York Times bestselling author has won the Bram Stoker Award and been nominated many times for the Stoker, the Shirley Jackson Award, and others.  His novels have been published in at least fifteen languages in countries around the world.  Over the past twenty years, Golden has written dozens of novels, as well as comics and graphic novels, short stories, screenplays, radio plays, and an animated web series.

"I never could have imagined--twenty years ago, in a market that even then frequently saw books appear on the stands and go out of print in a matter of months--that OF SAINTS AND SHADOWS would still be in print, and never gone out of print, two decades later,” Golden says. “I've been a full-time writer ever since, but that first novel of the Shadow Saga is the one that started it all."

On June 1st, the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Salem, NH--where Golden made frequent signing appearances early in his career--will host a 20th anniversary celebration featuring cake, numerous giveaways, and author special guests including Brian Keene, Daniel Palmer, Mary Sangiovanni, Nate Kenyon, and Rio Youers.  Golden will also be offering special online giveaways leading up to and on June 1st. http://www.christophergolden.com

Golden's next novel, TIN MEN--now in feature film development at Warner Brothers, will appear in 2015 from Random House, but the author will read from that novel for the very first time at the June 1st event, as well as from his most recent publication, SNOWBLIND, available now from St. Martin's Press.

Christopher Golden is available for interviews. Please email [email protected]

Of Saints and Shadows Angel Souls and Devil Hearts Of Masques and Martyrs The Gathering Dark Waking Nightmares The Graves of SaintsThe Graves of Saints

On the 20th anniversary of the publication of Christopher Golden’s first novel, OF SAINTS AND SHADOWS, these fantastic authors and sites have shared their thoughts…

“Golden’s 1994 book is the template for a score of books that have been published in the years since its publication.  Many of those books have been bestsellers.  Reading Of Saints and Shadows again after so long, I was amazed to realize how many elements now familiar in the vampire and thriller genres appeared in Saints first.  Golden’s imagination and expert plotting wove these elements into a startlingly original book, as exciting to read now as it was when it first appeared on the rack.  Of Saints and Shadows should be part of every genre writer’s library.”
          --Charlaine Harris

“Some of my editor friends tell me that horror fiction is finally starting to make a
comeback after the catastrophic boom and bust in the 1980s. If that's true, writers like Christopher Golden are a big part of the reason.”
          --George R. R. Martin

“Christopher Golden was writing kick-ass urban fantasy before the genre even had a name.  The Peter Octavian novels are smart, fast-paced, lyrical and vicious.”
--Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Rot & Ruin

“Christopher Golden is one of the most hard-working, smartest, and most talented writers of his generation, and his books are so good and so involving that they really ought to sell in huge numbers.  Everything he writes glows with imagination.”
                      --Peter Straub

“Although Of Saints and Shadows was not the first Christopher Golden novel I read, it was the novel that illustrated for me why it is he’s been so widely-read and well on his way to becoming a household name:  from the very first — the very first — this guy had a wizard’s ability to balance deeper themes with compelling plots that kept the reader from knowing they were being asked to see the worldview of a singular story-teller, one whose personal agendas never turn into lectures, and whose sense of pace, characterization, and overall story form began where most writers arrive after only a dozen novels.  Tis is to say, I’ve hated him for as long as I’ve been reading him, because i’ll never be this good of a story-teller.  Never.  I read all of his work, and will continue to do so, and have the anti-psychotic prescription bills to prove it.  Yeah — he’s that good.”
-- Gary A. Braunbeck

“Golden combines quiet, dark, subtle mood with Super-Giant monster action.  Sort of M.R. James meets Godzilla!”
--Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy

“It’s almost an entire generation since Christopher Golden put out his debut novel Of Saints and Shadows, bit the bullet and became a full-time writer. In those intervening years he’s produced a staggering number of follow-up books, comics and stories whose standard remains embarrassingly high. At PS Publishing, we were fortunate enough to do the special limited signed hardcover edition of The Boys Are Back In Town, a time-travel paradox that sits happily alongside Finney’s Time And Again, King’s 11.22.63 and, in the short form, Heinlein’s ‘All You Zombies’. Here’s a fine chance for nature nuts to see the tiny acorn from which mighty oak trees have since grown: I tell ya . . . Saints is as good now as it was then. And so’s Golden. Maybe even better. Damn his eyes!”
--Peter Crowther, author of Songs of Leaving, publisher at PS Publishing

“A delightful read and a noteworthy debut by a writer who cares passionately about the stuff of horror.”
--Douglas E. Winter, in Cemetery Dance

“A breathtaking story that succeeds in marrying gore and romance, sex and sentiment. A brilliant epic.”
--Dark News, Paris

“Before Urban Fantasy was even a glimmer in our eyes, there was Golden’s Peter Octavian. ... Christopher Golden wrote the first Peter Octavian book back in the mid 1990's before Urban Fantasy was even a genre. While almost everyone gives credit to Charles De Lint and Laurell K. Hamilton for beginning our favorite genre, somehow Golden has been overlooked and I believe strongly he should receive credit as well as the worlds others have built after him have so many of the same characteristics.”
--DangerousRomance.com

“It has a refreshing take on the whole vampire mythology. This is quite impressive, seeing as it predates the current vampire trend by over ten years.”
--Worlds Unimagined

“Golden redefined vampires in his Shadow Saga series.”
--SFRevu

“A new book by Christopher Golden means only one thing: the reader is in for a treat.  His books are rich with texture and character, always inventive, and totally addictive.”
            --Charles de Lint

“One of the best contemporary writers of dark fantasy and horror.  As good as Stephen King.”

22. How to Use Cross-Promotion to Sell Your Book

Be-Your-Own-Publicist-ArticThe book industry is like any other in the sense that selling and marketing your product — and, in essence, yourself — can often be the toughest part.

If you’re a unknown author working with a small publishing house (or self-publishing), partnering up with a brand that has a large following could help boost sales and get your name in the press. We got the scoop from several branding experts on how to choose the right partner:

Think outside the box and team up with a brand, retailer or expert who supplements your area of expertise. If you just wrote a book about the benefits of Pilates and the barre method, [Beth Feldman, co-founder of BeyondPR Group] suggests teaming up with Lululemon to do a book signing at their store or build a 10-city tour to appear in their stores and then promote yourself to local media. This begins with concocting a well-crafted strategy to share why you would add value to them via media exposure.

To learn more, including how to build a local following, read: How To Be Your Own Publicist.

[Insert Book Cover Here] About Georgetown Academy:

Synopsis:

It’s the beginning of a new political administration. That might not mean much at most high schools, but at Georgetown Academy, Washington D.C.’s most elite prep school, January 20th means new alliances, new flings, and new places to party.

While freshmen—nicknamed “interns” for their willingness to jump into bed with anyone higher on the D.C. totem pole—navigate the not-so-friendly halls of GA searching for Algebra and Bio classes, the school’s lifers have other things on their minds.

For self-proclaimed D.C. royalty Brinley Madison (of those Madisons), the first day of school is all about establishing the social hierarchy and playing the part of perfect political wife to her boyfriend, the outgoing Vice President’s son. Too bad he has a wandering eye that puts Bill Clinton’s to shame. Can she keep him, and her own secret vice, in check?

Ellie Walker, Brinley’s best friend, floats through the halls on the arm of golden boy Hunter McKnight (the JFK of GA). But when her ex-boyfriend, Gabe, returns to town and her Senator mother’s political nemesis is reelected, Ellie’s life starts to snowball out of control.

Shy, quiet Evan Hartnett is more into books than beer, and her closet is full of t-shirts and jeans instead of Jason Wu and Jimmy Choo. No one’s ever really noticed her—but she’s been noticing them. When her star rises as an intern at D.C.’s most-watched political news show, she soon finds the two worlds colliding in ways that make her question what’s secret and what’s fair game.

New girl Taryn Reyes is all laid-back, California cool; with a father who’s in line to be the first Hispanic president, she’s ready to dive into the D.C. scene with an open mind. But when her fellow students turn out to be more interested in spreading rumors than making friends, she realizes that forging a drama-free path might be a lot harder than she thinks.

With so many new friends and former flames in the mix, things are bound to get a little heated. And while diplomatic immunity might keep the cops away, there’s not much it can do about the press.

In a town where one teenage misstep can turn into a national scandal, the students at Georgetown Academy will have to be on their best behavior—or, at least, they’ll have to make the world believe that they are.

Because there’s only one rule: whatever you do, don’t get caught.

What’s Cool from Coliloquy:

As the party scene at Georgetown Academy gets under way, authors Alyssa and Jessica let readers decide which of the main girls to follow. You’ll see scandalous behavior, unexpected liaisons, and secret betrayals…all giving you a different perspective as events unfold.

24. Baltimore: The Infernal Train by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden

All aboard, comic book collectors and horror fans. Baltimore: The Infernal Train has arrived. Choo-choo....chew.

While Baltimore hides out in Budapest awaiting the arrival of the sadistic Judge Duvic, a strange woman shows up with a bizarre invention she promises will rid the world of vampire plague.

By Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, Ben Stenbeck, Dave Stewart. Published by Dark Horse Comics.

The first issue of The Infernal Train was released on September 4th. There will be three issues in this story. Issue #2 will be released in October. Issue #3 will be available in November.

If you haven't read any of the Baltimore comics yet, here's the backstory:

It all began with BALTIMORE, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire, which Christopher Golden calls "the coolest project [he's] ever been involved with." Written by Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola, this illustrated novella took Hans Christian Andersen's classic story and turned it into a gothic tale, complete with dark and stormy nights, strangers brought together by a mutual acquaintance, battlefields in war-torn countries, and, oh, yes, vampires. Months after a devastating plague ends World War I, Europe is suddenly flooded with deadly vampires. Lord Henry Baltimore, a soldier determined to wipe out the monsters, is on the hunt for the creature responsible for this chaos and his own personal tragedy. What he uncovers is a terror as horrific and frightening as any he's seen on the battlefield.

There's more to that story: Dark Horse Comics has published additional mini-series and graphic novels, and even more Baltimore stories are on the way. BALTIMORE: THE INFERNAL TRAIN is the newest mini-series in the line. This month, you can also pick up the third volume of collected Baltimore stories, BALTIMORE: A PASSING STRANGER AND OTHER TALES.

Check out Christopher Golden's site - specifically the Baltimore page - for more information on the series. Also check out the electronic press kit (EPK), which contain an excerpt of the first book, a video interview with the authors, the original press release, and more.

I have to tell you all what happened when I was writing this post, because it's a perfect example of how my life works: As I was typing up this post, I was watching the film Frequency, which I've easily seen a dozen times. It's one of those movies that, when I see it in the TV listings, I immediately click over to it. I have told people that I want to make a boxed set of Frequency and the book The Boys are Back in Town by Christopher Golden and sell it to people who, like me, are keen on causality and dig stories that show what happens in the present day when someone somehow changes the past.

So the end credits of Frequency rolled by, and I'm still typing away, and the next thing they show is an ad for the new TV series Sleepy Hollow, which I will definitely be sampling. Earlier today, I saw a billboard for the show and reminded folks to read Sleepy Hollow High by Christopher Golden and Ford Lytle Gilmore in the meantime.

Immediately following the Sleepy Hollow TV spot was an advert for Sons of Anarchy. I started cracking up. Not because SoA is a comedy (it definitely is not) but because the SoA comic book series was written by Christopher Golden, with art by Damian Couceiro, and it just so happens that it was profiled in USA Today earlier today. SAMCRO fans can pick up the first issue next Wednesday, the day after the show's season premiere. High-five to Boom! Studios for getting the perfect pub date - and the perfect author. Golden is not only a fantastic writer, but he's also a fan of the series, and he's certain to do it justice.
