1. Johanna Basford to Create Two New Coloring Books For Adults

Johanna Basford (GalleyCat)British artist Johanna Basford (pictured, via) has inked a deal with Penguin Random House to create two new coloring books for adults. Book one, entitled Lost Ocean: An Underwater Adventure & Coloring Book, will be released on October 27th.

Here’s more from the press release: “With LOST OCEAN, Johanna Basford invites color-inners of all ages to discover an enchanting underwater world hidden in the depths of the sea. Through intricate pen and ink illustrations to complete, color, and embellish, readers will meet shoals of exotic fish, curious octopi, and delicately penned seahorses.”

Madeline McIntosh, the president of the Penguin Publishing Group, and Jake Lingwood, the deputy managing director and publisher at Ebury Publishing, negotiated the deal with literary agent Ed Victor. Meg Leder, the executive editor at the United States’ Penguin Books, and Elen Jones, an editor at the United Kingdom’s Virgin Books, will edit these projects.

2. Kathryn Leigh Scott Celebrates Her Novel & Dark Shadows

Writer Kathryn Leigh Scott recently hosted a lunch in New York City to celebrate her new novel, Dark Passages. The author starred in Dark Shadows, and called her novel a “love letter” to the vampire soap opera from the late 1960s.

Here’s more from FishbowlNY: “Set in the swinging ’60s, it tells the tale of an actress moonlighting as a Playboy bunny who just happens to be vampire and is determined to make it in New York City without her supernatural powers. While working on the cult hit Dark Passages, she meets her nemesis, a 300-year-old witch.”

The author had just returned from London after shooting a cameo for Tim Burton‘s Dark Shadows film.

3. The Queen tweets for Hodder

Hodder & Stoughton has acquired a title written by The Queen, or rather the author of Twitter account HM @Queen_UK, offering a tongue-in-cheek look at 2011 through the eyes of the monarch.

Editorial director Fenella Bates bought world rights in the title, Gin O'Clock, through Sarah Williams of the Ed Victor Agency, and plans to publish as a £12.99 gift hardback on 27th October.

4. Ed Victor, Curtis Brown & Blake Friedmann To Launch Publishing Ventures

Earlier this week, the Ed Victor Literary Agency announced that it would setup an eBook and print-on-demand venture called Bedford Square Books.

The Bookseller also reported that two agencies have decided to follow in Ed Victor‘s footsteps: Curtis Brown, Ltd. and Blake Friedmann Literary, TV, and Film Agency. Curtis Brown CEO Jonathan Lloyd explained in the article: “Where Ed Victor leads, others follow—and we are right behind him, but with a rather larger list.”

According to The Bookseller.com, Bedford Square Books will publish its inaugural list in September. The list features six titles by authors that they currently represent. In January 2012, another six titles are scheduled for release.

5. Hachette Offers Digital Review Copies on NetGalley

hachette.jpgHachette Book Group (HBG) has joined with NetGalley to organize the distribution of HBG information and products. Through this deal, select reviewers, press, and booksellers will be given access to digital press kits and digital galleys.

Several enhancements will be included with the galleys such as video, audio, tour schedules, author Q&As and photos. The galleys will be readable on Kindle, Nook, Sony eReader, Kobo or a desktop.
