Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. -Theodore Roosevelt I told myself I can't blog until I finish my taxes. It remains to be seen if I can stay strong on this one. Give me some

I'm a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it. -Thomas Jefferson Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. -Seneca All of us have bad luck and good luck. The man who persists through the bad luck - who keeps right on going - is the man who is there when the good luck comes - and is ready to receive it. -Robert Collier In honor of St. Patrick's

Many people, myself included, have used PowerPoint to make important presentations. Did you just throw boxes on the screen or did you think about your audience and your message? I know that I am usually too overwhelmed by color and animation choices to put much thought into how each page should be designed. Stephen M. Kosslyn, chair of the Department of Psychology and John Lindsley Professor at Harvard University, has written a book to elucidate the process. In Clear and to the Point: 8 Psychological Principles for Creating Compelling PowerPoint Presentations, Kosslyn presents eight simple principles, based on modern science about perception, memory, and cognition, that will make any presentation work. In the original article below Kosslyn provides some tips to get you started. (more…)

I installed my new dryer today and it actually works!Good luck with taxes. You're ahead of me on this one. Next week.
My happy thought: Surely you're going to owe less money than I do!Good luck:>)
I finally mailed all of mine. Ugh. They should hire a writer to make those forms readable! You saw my happy news at 7-imps, but I blogged about my awesome friend, Katie, and her Oprah Big Give project today. I'm so excited for her, and her plans to make a difference.
Taxes...blech! :) But how about at least putting Writer in that profession slot? Positive things. When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a writer. I always wanted to be a writer. And now, no matter what happens in terms of agenting or publishing, I am DEFINITELY a writer. So one dream come true--and it's important to keep reminding ourselves of that. If we're doing it, if we're not pushing it
My youngest child is potty trained YAY! The daffodils are out in my yard and I am taking tons of pictures of sunshine on petals. YAY! My taxes are done with Turbo Tax and it was pretty painless - filed online and rebate already spent to pay off the Visa. YAY! I just have to remember to do the darn local ones... Wishing you sunshine and smooth sailing in IRS waters.
How about this, HWM:You "reward" yourself for doing your taxes by writing??? Win/win. At the end of the week, you mail off your taxes and your W.I.P. will be that much further along! I love me a little mind trickery...
Good news here: It was sunny today despite a chilly forecast and our family enjoyed the warm sun and playing out side all morning!Best of luck with your taxes - Love that quote!
New personal high score on Addams Family Pinball - 117 million. Approx 10 percent of the real high score on that machine at the bowling alley.
I can't believe Sam didn't post his good news about "Llama with a Hat." My good news is that I have a Children's Museum gig on the books now. Also, I found some blooming freesia bulbs at Trader Joe's and bought the pot. I planted freesia, but have no idea as to whether the flowers will actually come up.
Good news: It's over 60 degrees here today!! (Which means we just might be able to squeak by without filling up the oil tank again...) Okay, so it's raining, too, but things will green up faster. :-)
Yay for the great weather. The kids enjoyed playing outside for a change. And an agent requested a full manuscript, so I'm very hopeful!
Thanks, everyone, for sharing your encouragement and good news! And Sam, I'm with Alkelda, shame on you for not sharing your big news!
LOVE the quote! I needed it today along with all the comments and encouragement from everyone else. I am determined now to ponder a moment and give good news here... I guess I will say that I am just so fortunate to have 2 of the most beautiful and healthy children! Oh and my dad is an accountant and helps out with all that tax stuff!
