1. Fall Banner, Etc.

As I mentioned previously, I thought I might change out my banner to fit the season/holiday. And so I did. I used this squirrel that I drew last year (below) for another promotional.

He got incorporated in my new banner (below and above), as well as my Twitter page.

And so, as fall becomes winter, I will change ‘er up yet again. So puh-leeez keep on coming back to check out the (more frequent!) changes and updates!

2. Christmas Booth Banner/Garland Thingamabob

I will be at the Artist Market in the Heights on December 4th so if you're in the area come say "Hi". Mention this blog post to me and you can get your choice of three free cards. Gotta love that!

I'm really making a good effort not to wait until the last minute (like I normally do) to get all my goodies done for my booth. I have so many projects going on at once right now it's crazy...crazy good! I wanted to have a Christmas banner/garland at the entrance of my booth but finding one that is 10ft. isn't that easy. I decided to just do one myself...heck, I'm pretty crafty.

I chose to use felt because it's easy peazy and super cheap. This entire project took me about 45 minutes from start to finish. Very simple...

basically all you need is your felt, scissors (I used pinking shears), white marking pencil (this is just a Prismacolor one), paper and bias tape.

What I like about using bias tape is that it's already pressed, folded and ready to go.

Fold your 9x12 piece of felt in half, then trace your pattern.

cut it out...

Viola! You can get three pieces from a single sheet.

3. At work on new logo and banner...

For the next few weeks I will want to be in a late October mode.  A new banner is here for a few weeks.

I also finished making a new logo that I can use from time to time in all the right places.  This kind of branding can be useful if you create products for sale... or even as an addition on a business card.
Do you have a favorite logo of yours that you use on your work, other than or in addtion to your standard copyright?

4. Making a Banner + Upcoming Craft Shows

Last night, I played around with making a Chickengirl Design banner using circle punches. I wanted to make one since I'm participating in two craft shows, one coming up this Saturday at Blue House Ann Arbor, and the Flint Handmade Spring Market show in May. More info coming up!

5. New year, New Banner

Happy New Year! Kicking off the year by changing up my blog banner. These new colors and textures are the kind of style I'm striving for lately. Doesn't seem to match the rest of my blog right now but it feels like the right direction!

7. Federal court rules USA PATRIOT Act’s National Security Letters unconstitutional

The EFF has just reported that the gag order provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act concerning National Security Letters are unconstitutional. This is NOT the Connecticut case, but a related one concerning the records of an internet service provider. Here is more explanation from the ACLU and a link to the decision (pdf). The decision claims this gag order provision of the USA PATRIOT Act is unconstituional because “it does not afford adequate procedural safeguardd, and because it is not a sufficiently narrowly tailored restriction on protected speech.”

8. USA PATRIOT Act gag orders allows people to spread falsehoods about USAPA itself

One of the things that’s so harmful about the USA PATRIOT Act’s gag order, in my opinion, is that the people who have the best firsthand information about it are the ones that are least free to talk about it.

I was one of four library colleagues who challenged an NSL [National Security Letter] in the courts around the time of its reauthorization. We were under a gag order because of the nondisclosure provision of the NSL section of the Patriot Act. This happened even though a judge with high-level security clearance had declared that there was no risk in identifying us as recipients of an NSL. We were therefore not allowed to testify to Congress about our experience with the letters - which seek information, without court review, on people like library users. It is more than irksome to now discover that the attorney general was giving Congress false information - at the same time that we recipients of NSLs were not allowed to express our concerns
