1. Artist Genevieve Castree could use some help

Last year, cartoonist and musician Geneviève Castrée Elverum was diagnosed with inoperable Stage Four pancreatic cancer just four months after giving birth to a daughter. She is only 34 years old. You can read about her case and what you can do to help at this GoFundMe organized by her husband. The campaign has already […]

2. Chester Brown is hitting the road with his Biblical prostitution treatise (NSFW)

marywept.lgThere’s a new Chester Brown book coming out, and it’s a doozy. It’s called Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus, and it examines stories of bibles heroines via their relationship with prostitution. This profession was at the heart of Chester Brown’s previous book, Paying For It, which is all about how he switched to […]

3. Review: Nick Drnaso gives us 2016’s first great work with ‘Beverly’

Nick Drnaso’s fictional world is a particularly joyless one where even coming together doesn’t much help the human condition. It might even make things worse. As depicted in the Drnasoverse, each human has their own internal monologue that other humans are shut out from, and this creates distance, alienation, and confusion. Since one of us […]

5. Chippendale, DeForge and Shapton arriving in February from D&Q

puke_forcelg2015 isn’t even cold in its rocking chair and 20126 is coming on like gangbusters. Here’s what D&Q has coming in February, the long awaited collection of Brian Chippendale’s Puke Force, new Michael DeForge (does he EVER sleep?) and Leanne Shapton.  Puke Force collects the sui generis webcomic that Chippendale serialized for a long time. 6. D+Q to publish Laura Park’s Do Not Disturb My Waking Dream

laura park

Ignatz winner, Eisner-nominee Laura Park is a cartoonist who veers into “national treasure” territory for me. Her classically styled linework and delicate coloring mix with an ineffable, inspired mix of sadness and tenderness. Do Not Disturb My Waking Dream, her mini comic, is a small classic, released in small numbers. But hooray, D+Q will be publishing a collected edition of her comics under the Waking Dream title.

In what will be her graphic novel debut, Do Not Disturb my Waking dream will collect these minis, one hopes, along with some new comics.

The book was acquired by Tom Devlin, who states, “Laura Park is a good old fashioned power drawer. She can draw anything and is one of those rare people who can actually crosshatch. As anyone who has seen her sketchbooks can corroborate, Laura is able to dig deep into her mental and physical pain and turn that into some of the scariest, saddest, and most beautiful drawings around.”

Park’s work has appeared in Best American Comics, Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Vice magazine, and Saveur.com, and she illustrated two JAmes Patterson books, Middle School and I Funny.

No publication date announced, but this is already something to look forward to.

7. That ‘Wilson’ movie is on again with Harrelson and Dern

wilson-graphic-novel-book-cover-01-461x600.jpg

Daniel Clowes is the Mark Millar of the indie comics set, with two of his graphic novels—Ghost World and Art School Confidential—having been filmed. And now a third, Wilson, based on the GN of the same name, is back on track, with filming set for Minneapolis next month. The script is by Clowes.

The book was originally slated to be directed by Alexander Payne, back in 2010, and bounced around a bit before Fox Searchlight picked it up. If the Clowes tale—about a grumpy, socially awkward man who is painfully obtuse as he attempts to connect with other humans—was not written directly for Payne to direct, it night as well have been as all his films deal with familial estrangement. But it turns out the film will be directed by Craig Johnson, previously of The Skeleton Twins, and Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern will star as the misanthropic Wilson and his ex-wife/connection interest.

Payne will still produce, however, with his Ad Hominem Enterprises partners Jim Taylor and Jim Burke, Sam Raimi and Josh Donen all attached in some way.

I just happened to watch The Skeleton Twins the other night (it was edited and produced by Jennifer Lee, formerly of Vertigo, and an old Beat Pal.) It was a smart, deft film about…people awkwardly trying to connect with their true feelings, with Hader and Wiig shining. Harrelson and Dern are great 90% of the time, so this sounds like a quality project all around.

8. D&Q to publish Adrian Tomine’s Killing and Dying in October

tomine killing1 D&Q to publish Adrian Tomines Killing and Dying in October

Somehow I managed to miss last week’s biggest news of all: a new collection from Adrian Tomine, coming in October! The ominously titled Killing and Dying which collects the last few issues of Optic Nerve:

“Amber Sweet” shows the disastrous impact of mistaken identity in a hyper-connected world; “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture” details the invention and destruction of a vital new art form in short comic strips; “Translated, from the Japanese,” is a lush, full-color display of storytelling through still images; the title story, “Killing and Dying”, centers on parenthood, mortality, and stand-up comedy.

According to D&Q’s Chris Oliveros who acquired the book, it might be his favorite of all Tomine’s books. “We’ve come to expect from him an eloquent visual sensibility and insightful, complex storytelling, but there’s something else going on here: these stories are darkly funny, and they’re tinged with a very particular acerbic wit that we haven’t seen all too often before this.”

Considering that Tomine’s previous books include the graphic novel defining books including Shortcomings, and Summer Blonde, that’s high praise, but I’d have to concur that the last few issues of Optic Nerve have shown Tomine at the height of his storytelling powers.

Tomine has a short but revealing interview with The New York where the book was announced:

“Killing and Dying” is the name of one of the stories in the next issue of “Optic Nerve,” about a family—there’s an illness that has to be dealt with, and there’s also a burgeoning interest in standup comedy that has to be dealt with. A lot of the story is about certain questions one faces as a parent: how to handle hardships, and how much to encourage and support the whims of your children. In a way, it was an attempt to confront some of my fears as a husband and as a father.

The book will be published in the UK by United Kingdom to Faber & Faber, in France to Éditions Cornélius, in Germany to Reprodukt, and in Italy to Rizzoli.

9. D&Q To publisher Kate Beaton’s ‘Step Aside, Pops’ in September 2015

step off pops beaton D&Q To publisher Kate Beatons Step Aside, Pops in September 2015
The long awaited second collection of Kate Beaton’s madly popular Hark! A Vagrant comic is finally on its way, and it’s called Step Aside, Pops, a phrase we’ll all be saying a lot come September. Tom Devlin acquired the book for Drawn & Quarterly.

“Kate’s wit is sharper than ever in Step Aside, Pops,” said Devlin in a statement. “She’s found the perfect way to explore her love of history, while effortlessly deflating the pompous, self-righteous figures of authority we were taught to respect in school. Her restlessness has made her drawings even funnier.”

2011’s Hark! A Vagrant spent five months on theNew York Times graphic bestseller list, and is one of D&Q’s all time best-sellers. It won the Publishers’s Weekly Critics poll and propelled Beaton to the Beat’s Comics Industry Person of the Year.

In case you’re not familiar with Beaton’s comics, they are impeccably researched and slyly drawn, with a keen eye for the human foibles of blow-hard, the fretting parent, the bicycle riding vixen, and more.

Beaton has a brief interview in the LA Times:

HC: How much historical research goes into a comic? Are your comics based on things you’re reading anyway, or do you go in search of information for specific cartoons?

KB: A little of both here. I’m always reading, I’m always sort of trying to pull in ideas and information and hoping that there is a comic in there somewhere. But once you pick a subject and say “I’m going to do this one,” if it’s a literary parody or a historical figure, then yeah there is a lot of research in it. I want to make sure all my ducks are in a row, and I feel like people would know if I hadn’t bothered to look at the thing from all angles before commenting on it. There is always an essay that will make you think more, an angle that will surprise you, a whole closet of things you never read before. History and literature live many lives after the fact, years of opinions and interpretation.

Also, in case you’re in the mood for Kate Beaton merch there’s a ton of it here:

12. John Porcellino tours for The Hospital Suite

JOHNNY_2.jpg

One of the eagerly awaited books of fall is The Hospital Suite by John Porcellino, a graphic novel length account of his health issues and battle with OCD, depression and other ills. Despite the heavy subject matter, it’s fascinating reasons with Porcellino’s bare bones storytelling keeping anything from becoming maudlin or self pitying.

Porcellino will be on tour this fall, kicking off at SPX in three weeks. Check him out at a town near you.

All 6th-grader Bill Stokes wants is to get through middle school unnoticed so he can go on to become a big-time pro video-gamer.  Then his mom comes home from her medical research volunteer job with a zombie virus.  Now Bill has to deal with skin problems and body chemistry changes that make puberty look like a walk in the park!  How’s he supposed to realize his dream when his life has become a festering, rotting, undead nightmare?
I read the first four pages… it doesn’t appeal to me.  It’s kind of interesting…his mother is a zombie, he’s sort of a zombie (he’s still got his human reasoning).  But this is just another variant in the “kid’s diary” genre, with spot illustrations, which are pretty good for a zombie kid!

16. New edition of Ed the Happy Clown previewed

201204090252 New edition of Ed the Happy Clown previewed
The D&Q blog has a tempting preview of a new edition of ED THE HAPPY CLOWN, Chester Brown’s early surrealist masterpiece about a man who has Ronald Reagan’s head grafted onto the end of his penis.

Okay, so the book is a little ways away from being in your local comic or bookstore but it exists. Of course, this being Chester there are tons of notes and even a little bonus strip that has nothing to do with Ed really. And since people have asked, this is what Chester considers the proper Ed the Happy Clown story. There isn’t extra work and in fact some of those later Vortex issues are not included. Feast your eyeballs!!

Note to self: so do not throw out Voxtex editions of Yummy Fur.

ED THE HAPPY CLOWN started as “The Man Who Couldn’t Stop” in the self piblished YUMMY FUR, then was reprinted as a collection, went out of print, was reprinted in an edited pamphlet form, with Brown substantially editing and redrawing the story. So, while we look forward to this “Directors Cut” edition, on the great Comics LIbrary of the Sky, we’ll also keep ALL of our old editions for comparative textual analysis.

Comics 2012 thus far: complete FLEX MENTELLO and ED THE HAPPY CLOWN. A good year!

17. Coming Attractions: Fall 2012: Macmillan!!

.

stimpy glee Coming Attractions: Fall 2012: Macmillan!!Earlier this week, you may have heard the dogs barking in your neighborhood.  Perhaps all of the car alarms went off simultaneously.  Perhaps you were listening to the radio, and a strange squeeling noise was heard.  Perhaps a bit of dust was dislodged from the ceiling tiles over your cubicle, creating a small rain of particles.

That was me.

Generally, my squeels of joy are at the lower, Stimpson J. Cat, level.  Sometimes, I might bounce up and down in my chair if I see something really cool.  This week, I saw something so utterly cool and unexpected that my squeel went hypersonic.

Now, regular readers know I’ve seen a lot of cool stuff in my 40+ years on this planet.  I love seeking out the strange and cool and unusual, and love sharing it with others.  So, what, pray tell, could be so amazingly awesome to cause an uninhibited and automatic reflex that shakes window panes?

Let me enumerate them.

  1. There’s a Pipi Longstocking book I haven’t read.
  2. It’s been out of print for thirty years.
  3. It’s a collection of Pippi Longstocking comics.
  4. The comics were drawn by the same artist who illustrated the prose novels.
  5. It’s a full-color hardcover from Drawn+Quarterly.

Pippi Longstocking has been translated into 64 languages.  Astrid Lindgren is one of those superheroes of literature, and pretty awesome!

  • The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award pays out about $750,000 dollars (SEK 5,000,000) annualy to notable children’s writers, illustrators, and promoters of children’s literature.
  • She was the second recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
  • She will appear on the soon-to-be-redesigned 20 Kroner banknote.
  • She has her own amusement park, based on her books.
  • In 1978, the Russians named a minor asteriod after her.  When announced, she is said to have declared “From now on you can address me [as] Asteroid Lindgren”.
  • The first Swedish microsatellite was named for her, and the scientific instruments were named after her characters.

first3marbles thumb New semi autobiographical Gilbert Hernandez book due from D&Q
A new Gilbert Hernandez GN is not astonishing news in and of itself — the guy is one of the most prolific geniuses out there. However, that it will be overtly semi-autobiographical and that it will be published by D&Q makes it even more newsworthy, as revealed this morning at The Comics Reporter.

MARBLE SEASON “follows a group of children and teenagers growing up in suburban southern California of the early 1960s, and tells the untold stories from the youth of an American comics legend. Pop culture references—TV shows, comic books, and music—saturate this evocative story, giving MARBLE SEASON the distinctive narrative depth and attention to detail fans have come to expect from the acclaimed cartoonist’s work.”

The book will be released this fall with a tour to follow.

Although Fantagraphics has long been the publisher of the Hernandez Bros., Gilbert often works for other publishers, including Dark Horse and DC, so a switch to D&Q for this book isn’t a shock, although it is noteworthy.

Drawn & Quarterly has acquired world rights to Gilbert Hernandez’s semiautobiographical graphic novel, MARBLE SEASON, it was announced today by Tom Devlin, Creative Director and Acquiring Editor of Drawn & Quarterly.

”Working with Gilbert is a dream come true. He’s been on my very short list of favorite all-time cartoonists ever since I found a copy of LOVE & ROCKETS #8 at the Million Year Picnic and read the story ‘The Laughing Sun.’ He has never left that list, ” said Devlin. “MARBLE SEASON is the autobiographical side of this great cartoonist (albeit semi-fictionalized)–where we get to see how his young comics mind developed.”

To be released in Fall 2012, MARBLE SEASON follows a group of children and teenagers growing up in suburban southern California of the early 1960s, and tells the untold stories from the youth of an American comics legend. Pop culture references—TV shows, comic books, and music—saturate this evocative story, giving MARBLE SEASON the distinctive narrative depth and attention to detail fans have come to expect from the acclaimed cartoonist’s work.

Hernandez, along with his brothers Jaime and Mario, is the co-creator and cartoonist behind the iconic comic book series LOVE & ROCKETS, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2012. Hernandez’s seminal contribution to the series and the medium is the generation-spanning, cross-cultural, literary soap-opera masterpiece about a tight-knit Central American town, Palomar. Hernandez has won numerous awards for his stories, including the Kirby, Inkpot, Harvey, and the United States Artists Literature Fellowship. Hernandez was born in Oxnard, California and lives in Las Vegas with his wife and daughter.

MARBLE SEASON is Hernandez’s first book with D+Q, and will be supported by a full-scale promotional campaign including a national author tour. MARBLE SEASON will be distributed in the U.S. by Farrar, Straus & Giroux and in Canada by Raincoast Books. International rights are represented by Samantha Haywood of the Transatlantic Literary Agency.

21. Kibbles ‘n’ Bits – 5/5/11 Chester Brown Edition

chester.jpg
A while back we predicted Chester Brown’s I-was-a-john memoir, PAYING FOR IT, would be one of the most talked about graphic novels of the years. Surprise! We called it!

The Star looks at the book in light of Brown’s run for Parliament on the Libertarian ticket:

Initially, I was a bit annoyed by the timing of the election but it might turn out to be a good thing that I’m getting publicity at this time. I’m pretty sure I’m the only ‘out’ John who’s running as a candidate,” says Brown, who also represented the party in the riding in the previous federal election, finishing with 490 votes (23,932 shy of winner Olivia Chow).

The local party leader was a bit surprised by Brown’s news of the book:

“I phoned him up and asked, ‘Have you heard what my new book is about?’ He had no idea, so I had to explain it to him. I said, ‘I’ll understand if you guys don’t want me to run as a candidate.’ He said, ‘No, no. Libertarians believe in decriminalizing prostitution, so we have no problem with you running.’

“That’s the kind of party it is, I guess,” he concludes. “Or maybe that’s how desperate they are for candidates.”

Via House of Substance, we see that Brown’s non-campaign campaign didn’t exactly jell with voters (the election was held Monday):

AND ELSEWHERE:

The Globe and Mail notes that the book’s initial print run was 20,000 copies and talks about a shelved concept:

Brown initially conceived Paying for It – a title he’s not entirely keen on since it implies moral and physical “burdens” he claims not to have suffered – as a much larger opus “about my whole sexual history, starting with my childhood. … But when I ran the idea by the ex-girlfriends I’m still friends with, neither was very keen on it, so that kind of put the kibosh on it. I had to narrow down.”

Also at the Globe and Mail James Brown analyzes the storytelling:

Brown adopts a slightly bird’s-eye perspective here, almost as if he is being watched from a two-way mirror positioned across the room. It’s a perspective – combining discretion and distance with notions of surveillance and voyeurism – Brown adopts throughout the entirety of Paying for It.

An interview at Maclean’s:

I read an interview with Spalding Gray several years ago where he was questioning—why do people even have secrets? M

The following is a selection of new comics titles due to be published in April 2011.   This list is not comprehensive, just what I’ve discovered browsing the Internet.  Below, you’ll find selected titles which caught my interest.  If you would like to browse forthcoming graphic novels and related books at your leisure, click here. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore.

If you click that link above, you’ll see all the graphic novels at BN.com, sorted by date.  Lots of  graphic novels (and related books) scheduled from May to December.  Of course, there will be even more titles added and announced in time for the Holidays!  (You might want to use your tax return to buy some bookshelves.)

Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone, titles may change, and covers may be altered. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library.  I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I’ve neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below. Yes, you may promote your own work, but please include the ISBN for easy searching (and shopping!)

As always, I work for Barnes & Noble, but do not speak for them.  These are titles which caught my interest, and are worth a closer work.  I have not read any of these books (perhaps a comic here or there) so do not endorse any specific title on this list.  My tastes are not yours, so please recommend other titles below in the comments!  Also, the information below is subject to change.  Covers, publication dates, prices, formats… all data are subject to changes.

25. Coming Attactions: January 2011

A bit late this month, partly due to the Holidays.

Books, like movies, tend to be minimalized in January.  Publishing publicity departments slow down during December, and most big books are kept in reserve for promotion at Book Expo America in May.  Self improvement and wedding books are popular, as stores promote “New Year, New You” titles, and holiday engagements drive wedding planning titles.

So, this month is a bit light.  There are always some significant titles every month, so here’s the list for January.  As always, the boilerplate:

Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library. Links connected to publishers will link to the publisher’s website, sometimes to the exact title. Links for the ISBN-13 (also known as the Bookland EAN) will take you to the title as featured on BarnesAndNoble.com . I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I’ve neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below.

Vietnamerica: A Family’s Journey by GB Tran

A Single Match by Oji Suzuki
