1. The Last Princess and the Cup of Immortality by D.R. Whitney

The Last Princess and the Cup of Immortality by D.R. Whitney is the first book in the Goddess Prophecies series. It came out in 2009, but I think it was overlooked because it doesn't follow the currently popular trend of vampires. It also slants more towards fantasy than urban fantasy, although it does spend time in the contemporary 'real' world, in addition to more exotic fantasy realms.

I haven't read the book yet because I just got it in my mailbox yesterday, but I did listen to the first four chapters of the audio movie book. The movie part got my attention and I'm glad it did. I don't normally like audio books; I don't really know why, but it's just not a format I normally enjoy. This new audio movie book format blew me away. No worries with imagining a person reading a book into a microphone here. This experience is more like closing your eyes while a major motion picture is playing. An excerpt is below so you can see (or rather, hear) for yourself.

The story itself sounds interesting and I think anybody who was interested in the tales of King Arthur (and similar stories) will be intrigued by this new look at the Lady of the Lake and the Cup of Immortality (the Holy Grail?). You can check it out for yourself and read the first three chapters here.

Summary (from goddessprophecies.com)
When Vivienne Le Faye, a sixteen-year-old, with intuitive powers inherits a priceless family amulet, she becomes an instant target.

Unaware of her noble heritage, the family CURSE haunts her, while DANGER threatens her, and a mysteriously handsome boy with golden eyes appears to protect her.

Convinced he’s real and exists somewhere and positive she has fallen irretrievably in love with him, Vivienne bravely follows her ‘gift of sight’ to England where her Amulet allows her passage through a Portal of Mists.

There, in a mystical world of witchcraft and wizardry, where many perils await her, she discovers he is an immortal Wizard with supernatural powers and she is the last Princess of the Misty Isle, destined to become the next Lady of the Lake.

Called to battle, to fulfill her birthright and armed with her new gifts of war craft and spell craft, together they must confront a terrifying enemy, the Master of the Souls, so that Vivienne can save their Magical World and allow the Misty Isle to rise again.

Hear what the Master of Souls has to say about The Last Princess and the Cup of Immortality.

An eye-catching cover, combined with an interesting plot, makes this one to keep an eye on.

4. Blood Oath by Christopher Farnsworth now on shelves...and coming to a theatre near you.

Blood Oath, by Christopher Farnsworth, was just released yesterday but Warp Films sees big things coming for the story because they've already purchased the rights for both this book and the sequel, Black Site.

I haven't had a chance to get it yet, but it looks interesting and I'm interested in finding out how this mash-up of the vampire fiction and spy-thriller genres works out.

If you've already read it, let me know what you thought.

Summary
This much is true…
In 1867, a young sailor was convicted of murdering two crew mates and drinking their blood.

The papers called him a vampire.

The President of the United States pardoned him, sparing his life. He spent the rest of his days in an asylum for the criminally insane.

At least, that’s the cover story…
The Ultimate Secret. The Ultimate Agent. The President's Vampire.

6. The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan is on the shelves

Rick Riordan, author of the popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, is following the age-old rule of 'don't fix it if it isn't broken.'

Red Pyramid: Book One of the Kane Chronicles replaces the Greek gods with Egyptian ones but otherwise sticks with a formula that seems to work.

Summary
Since their mother’s death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.

One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a "research experiment" at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.

Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them--Set--has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe--a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family, and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.

7. The Half-Blood Vampire series by Serena Robar gets a new look

In 2006, Serena Robar released her debut young adult novel, Braced 2 Bite, and followed it with two more books in the series - Fangs 4 Freaks and Dating 4 Demons.

Now, the Half-Blood Vampire series is being re-released with a fresh new look for 2010, along with a slight change to the titles. Braced to Bite comes out in June, Fangs for Freaks in July, and Dating for Demons in August.

Braced to Bite
Colby Blanchard had it all—but thirsted for more.

I had the boyfriend, the friends, and my future in the bag, but before you start hating me just hold on., I’m learning the hard way that nothing is quite as it seems. I’m turning into a vampire. Not just any vampire, a half-blood vampire. -And half-blood vampires must be eliminated. Now I have to defend my eternal life in front of a vampire council who sees no point in a half-blood roaming the earth. All the while I’m falling for Thomas, the vampire investigator who may ‘relieve me of my Undead status’ if the council commands it. I can’t trust mortals or vampires. In my case it’s not just my life at stake—it’s my heart too.
Read excerpt from Braced to Bite

Fangs for Freaks
Half-blood vampire Colby Blanchard unites her Psi Phi sisters.

Running a sorority house for half-blood vampires is harder work than I thought. Being half-bloods is practically the only thing we have in common. We may not all get along but we do need to stick together. Leaked information on our whereabouts has brought us under attack. Either someone on the vampire council wants us dead or there’s a new threat in town. Could there be a spy among us, watching us day and night, just waiting to strike?
Read excerpt from Fangs for Freaks

Dating for Demons
Yes you can be judged by the company you keep…especially if they are bloodthirsty vampires.

I just started to grasp that my best friend is a half-blood vampire, and now I’m facing demons of my own. Colby needs my help with an ancient prophesy, and myster

9. Holly Black writes about a White Cat, Book One in the Curse Workers series

White Cat (Curse Workers, Book One) by Holly Black comes out May 4, 2010.

I'm a sucker for anything new and I'm really interested in the idea of Curse Workers, people who can change your memories, emotions, or even your luck with just a simple touch. I'll be keeping an eye out for this one.

Summary
Cassel comes from a family of curse workers -- people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they're all mobsters, or con artists. Except for Cassel. He hasn't got the magic touch, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail -- he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.

Ever since, Cassel has carefully built up a façade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his façade starts crumbling when he starts sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He's noticing other disturbing things, too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him, caught up in a mysterious plot. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he also wonders what really happened to Lila. Could she still be alive? To find that out, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen.

10. Take a look at The Fallen Blade by Jon Courtenay Grimwood

If you're looking for alternative historic fiction set in a renaissance Venice populated with vampires, werewolves, assassins, and pirates, then The Fallen Blade by Jon Courtenay Grimwood is the book for you...and Orbit Books has recently revealed the cover. What do you think?

The Fallen Blade: Act One of the Assassini
(Book One in The Vampire Assassin Trilogy)

In the depths of night, customs officers board a galley in a harbor and overpower its guards. In the hold they find oil and silver, and a naked boy chained to the bulkhead. Stunningly beautiful but half-starved, the boy has no name. The officers break the boy’s chains to rescue him, but he escapes…

Venice is at the height of its power. In theory Duke Marco commands. But Marco is a simpleton so his aunt and uncle rule in his stead. They command the seas, tax the colonies, and, like those in power before them, fear assassins better than their own…

In a side chapel, Marco’s fifteen-year old cousin prays for deliverance from her forced marriage. It is her bad fortune to be there when Mamluk pirates break in to steal a chalice, but it is the Mamluks’ good luck – they kidnap her.

In the gardens beside the chapel, Atilo, the Duke’s chief assassin, prepares to kill his latest victim. Having cut the man’s throat, he turns back, having heard a noise, and finds a boy crouched over the dying man, drinking blood from the wound. The speed with which the boy dodges a dagger and scales a wall stuns Atilo. And the assassin knows he has to find the boy… Not to kill him, but because he’s finally found what he thought he would never find. Someone fit to be his apprentice.

The Fallen Blade by Jon Courtenay Grimwood is scheduled (at the moment) for release on January 27th, 2011.

11. It's Pooka time. Other by Karen Kincy coming July 1, 2010

Forget about werewolves and vampires hogging the spotlight. Author Karen Kincy has her debut novel, Other, coming out July 1st from Flux, and she's going to introduce you to Pookas. What's a Pooka? Well, I guess you could say it's kind of like a were-horse with fairy ancestry, but to find out more about Pookas you can either click here or click the 'What's a Pooka' button on the left side of the page.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a review copy from Flux but I'll be trying to snag it at GoodReads because it looks like it'll be interesting.

Other by Karen Kincy

I can’t last much longer. It’s been one week, three days, and I forget how many hours.

My belly cramps, and I curl on my bed, staring out at the stars. A delicious breeze glides through my window and cools my sweaty forehead. The air smells of summer–mowed grass, recent rain, lingering barbecue–and tempts me more than I want to admit. Shards of moonlight and shadow shift on the wall. I clench my teeth and toes and try to ride out the pain. My bedroom drifts counterclockwise, and I shut my eyes.

It can’t be good for me, not shapeshifting.

Seventeen-year-old Gwen hides a dangerous secret: she’s Other. Half-pooka, to be exact, thanks to the father she never met. Most Americans don’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for Others, especially not the small-town folks of Klikamuks, Washington. As if this isn’t bad enough, Gwen’s on the brink of revealing her true identity to her long-time boyfriend, Zack, but she’s scared he’ll lump her with the likes of bloodthirsty vampires and feral werewolves.

When a pack of werewolves chooses the national forest behind Gwen’s home as their new territory, the tensions in Klikamuks escalate–into murder. It soon becomes clear a serial killer is methodically slaying Others. The police turn a blind eye, leaving Gwen to find the killer before the killer finds her. As she hunts for clues, she uncovers more Others living nearby than she ever expected. Like Tavian, a sexy Japanese fox-spirit who rivals Zack and challenges her to embrace her Otherness. Gwen must struggle with her own conflicted identity, learn who she can trust, and–most importantly–stay alive.

12. Frankenstein Book Four: Lost Souls and Frankenstein: Prodigal Son, Graphic Novel

Frankenstein Book Four: Lost Souls
This latest installment of the Frankenstein series, due June 15th, sounds like it will be good. I'm looking forward to re-entering the world of Deucalion. If you haven't read the first three books in the series, you can check out my review of them here.

Summary WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE FIRST 3 BOOKS

The work of creation has begun again. Only now things will be different. Victor Leben, once Frankenstein, has not only seen the future—he’s ready to populate it. Using stem cells, “organic” silicon circuitry, and nanotechnology, he will engender a race of superhumans—the perfect melding of flesh and machine. With a powerful, enigmatic backer eager to see his dream come to fruition and a secret location where the enemies of progress can’t find him, Victor is certain that this time, nothing and no one can stop him.

It is up to five people to prove him wrong. In their hands rests nothing less than the survival of humanity itself.

They are drawn together in different ways, by omens sinister and wondrous, to the same shattering conclusion: Two years after they saw him die, the man they knew as Victor Helios lives on. Detectives Carson O’Connor and Michael Maddison; Victor’s engineered wife, Erika 5, and her companion Jocko; and the original Victor’s first creation, the tormented Deucalion, have all arrived at a small Montana town where their old alliance will be renewed—and tested—by forces from within and without, and where the dangers they face will eclipse any they have yet encountered. Yet in the midst of their peril, love will blossom, and joy, and they will discover sources of strength and perseverance they could not have imagined.

They will need all these resources, and more. For a monumental battle is about to commence that will require all their ingenuity and courage, as it defines what we are to be . . . and if we are to be at all.

14. Immortalis Carpe Noctem by Katie Salidas ** with Trailer **

Immortalis Carpe Noctem, the first book in the new Immortalis series, looks like a new twist on the vampire genre, when a recently turned vampire has to learn to adjust to her new way of life (or undeath), and the cover art is amazing.

Description

Bleeding to death after brutal mugging on the campus of UNLV, Twenty-five year old Alyssa, is rescued by the cold and aloof, vampire, Lysander. Taking pity on her, he shares the gift-and curse-of immortality. She awakens as a vampire and is soon devastated by harsh realities of her new way of life: the loss of her friends, her independence, and her humanity.

As if having her humanity stripped away wasn't enough to make life interesting, Alyssa finds out her Turning, did not go unnoticed by the rest of undead society. Old enemies; an ancient sect of vampire hunters, known as the Acta Sanctorum, as well as a powerful Vampire mistress, each set plans in motion to destroy both Alyssa and Lysander.

Only by accepting her new-found immortality and seizing the night, will Alyssa hope to survive. She and Lysander will have to fight together against two sets of enemies bent on destroying them.

Author Bio (from Amazon.com)

The youngest of four children, Katie has always had a desire to entertain. Since early childhood, she's dreamed fantastical characters and scribbled them into pages of various journals and notebooks. Taking an interest in vampires, she devoured every book, featuring those blood sucking creatures, in any genre she could find. It was only natural that a love of reading vampire stories, turned into a love to write them.

Katie is also a Las Vegas native, having grown up in the famed City of Sin. She loves to feature it as a recurring setting for many of her stories.

If you'd like to ask Katie any questions, she's letting visitors to her blog interview her this week...and as a special bonus to her readers, each interview question (max of 5) enters you in a contest.

15. Behind the cover of: The Maze Runner by James Dashner

I've been posting articles that include excerpts, and have been labeling them 'Previews'. Exciting and creative name, isn't it? :oP

The excerpts will continue to come, but will be featured under the slightly more creative title of 'Behind the cover', and those words will also be included in the title of the post, so you don't have to look through everything to see if an excerpt is included.

Maze Runner Description

Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learned to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies from below.

A new boy arrives every 30 days. The original group has been in "the glade" for two years, trying to find a way to escape through a maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun to give up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change. Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

16. Horns: A Novel, by Joe Hill

There's a slight chance you've never heard of Joe Hill, but chances are you've heard his dad's name a time or two - a writer who dabbles in horror (Stephen King).

Horns: A Novel is Joe Hill's second novel, coming just a few months after the paperback release of his debut, Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel. Personally, I'm not sure how tacking on 'A Novel" to every title will work in the long run, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything at the moment.

I haven't read Horns yet, but the premise is interesting so I'll probably be looking for it soon to give his writing a test drive. If you've already cracked the spine of this one, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on it.

Description

Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache . . . and a pair of horns growing from his temples.

At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances. A mental breakdown would have been the most natural thing in the world. But there was nothing natural about the horns, which were all too real.

Once the righteous Ig had enjoyed the life of the blessed: born into privilege, the second son of a renowned musician and younger brother of a rising late-night TV star, he had security, wealth, and a place in his community. Ig had it all, and more—he had Merrin and a love founded on shared daydreams, mutual daring, and unlikely midsummer magic.

But Merrin's death damned all that. The only suspect in the crime, Ig was never charged or tried. And he was never cleared. In the court of public opinion in Gideon, New Hampshire, Ig is and always will be guilty because his rich and connected parents pulled strings to make the investigation go away. Nothing Ig can do, nothing he can say, matters. Everyone, it seems, including God, has abandoned him. Everyone, that is, but the devil inside. . . .

Now Ig is possessed of a terrible new power to go with his terrible new look—a macabre talent he intends to use to find the monster who killed Merrin and destroyed his life. Being good and praying for the best got him nowhere. It's time for a little revenge. . . . It's time the devil had his due. . . .

****

I don't know about you, but that sounds interesting as HELL (pardon the pun). It's safe to say the only reason I don't already have the book is because I didn't see it at the bookstore, because if this little item had hit my book-hungry hands it would definitely be mine.

In addition to his two novels, Joe Hill also has a graphic novel series, Locke and Key, that has recently been picked up by "Star Trek" writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as a future film project.

Check out the interview with Joe Hill.

17. Wolfsangel by M.D. Lachlan; the myth of the werewolf reborn

Ok. I have a ton of books to get reviewed (not literally, but a few) but I have always been a big geek when it comes to werewolves or gods (Greek or Norse, take your pick), so I just had to give a quick shout-out for Wolfsangel by M.D. Lachlan. If you don't recognize that name, it's because he's really Mark Barrowcliffe, author of Girlfriend 44, Infidelity for First-Time Fathers, and Lucky Dog, in addition to a few non-fiction titles.

Description

The Viking King Authun leads his men on a raid against an Anglo-Saxon village. Men and women are killed indiscriminately but Authun demands that no child be touched. He is acting on prophecy. A prophecy that tells him that a child of the Gods will be found among the Saxons. If Authun takes the child and raises him as an heir, the child will lead his people to glory.

But Authun discovers not one child, but twin baby boys. Ensuring that his faithful warriors, witness to what has happened, die during the raid Athun takes the children and their mother back to Norway and the witches who live on the perilous mountain known as the Troll Wall. He places his destiny in their hands.

And so begins Wolfsangel, the first of a stunning multi-volume fantasy epic that will take a werewolf from his beginnings as the heir to a brutal Viking king, down through the ages. It is a journey that will see him hunt for his lost love through centuries and lives, and see the endless battle between the wolf, Odin and Loki – the eternal trickster – spill over into countless bloody conflicts from our history. This is the myth of the werewolf as it has never been told before.

A review of Wolfsangel by Mark Yon can be found over at SFF World, and you can find out more about the book at www.mdlachlan.com

I think the book has a lot of potential, but I see one tiny (?) problem looming ahead for it - the system of magic created in this world involves death, particularly the death of children, to implement magic.

Apparently, this is explained in a solid and logical way that lends itself to the story...but some readers might still be put off by the idea.

Wolfsangel is scheduled to be released May 20th.
