My contribution to our fall mailer. Done as a digital
Junk A Doodles piece.
My piece for our spring mailer is an older one but one I really love!
It's from a past Woogie Wednesday project we did here and you can see all the junk I started with. You can also see that I modified the piece a bit for the mailer.
1. Painterly/Digital
2. Found Object
3. Clay
I have 3 different styles which is really just one style in 3 different mediums since my characters seem to look the same. I started out my illustration career with digital and clay work and then introduce found objects. Out of the 3 I really love doing my found object pieces because it's totally away from the computer. I like my digital work for quickturn arounds or pieces with a lot of detail. Clay is the most time consuming for me because of kneading the clay, sculpting, baking, cooling and then painting. I'm very thankful for heat guns when it comes to painting :)
In my usual fashion, I am waiting until the last minute for this year's card design, mainly due to deadlines. I have the card laid out in my head for this year and it will actually be sent as an email (and printed and mailed to those who don't have email) because it will be an email to Santa from the Woog (surely Santa has email!). We usually do our Christmas cards from the Woog (and before she was born it was from the dog) so here is the first one we sent from her:
And this was last years:
This is my contribution to our mailer done in my clay style. I love doing little woodland animals!
^a view of my studio For the first time in my career I am finally "working alone" since my studio assistant, art director and mess maker (a.k.a. the Woog) went off to Kindergarten this year. I think I have adjusted well. I wouldn't say I'm getting more work done (I've always had a steady work flow going even with her in the studio) but I do like working constantly and uninterrupted for hours without having to take breaks. One thing that did stand out that I do work alone now, was when my husband called me one afternoon. My "hello" was very croaky and it hit me that I hadn't said a word since I told the Woog goodbye that morning!
Specs: Standing in front of potty with hands over mouth -'oops'. Small puddle of wee in front of him. This has got to be the strangest request I've ever received and I laughed out loud when I read it. The book hasn't been released yet so I'm just showing a little peek of the final but it's going to be a cute one! "Wee" ha, ha, ha!!
I have several reference books on drawing and use google's image search a good bit as a reference for things I'm not very familiar with. My favorite reference books for
color combinations are children's books. I have a vast collection of brightly colored books that really play with color.
Humm. That's a really hard question to answer for me. Some things usually take a few days or even minutes to finish. Most of my time spent on jobs is away from the computer. My brain is constantly working on a piece and once I sit down to do the final, I already know what I'm going to do and how it's going to pretty much look in final form. My digital style is always the quickest for me, then my Junk A Doodles style is next and my clay work takes me the longest (simply because of the baking, cooling, gessoing and painting).
This piece took me about 2 hours total to complete (after several concept sketches and ideas):
This one took about 3 hours (concept to completion):

^my first paying gig (see below)^ How Long Have I Been Working as an Illustrator? The easy answer to this is "all my life." But counting in professional years, it's been about 5 years. I documented my first year
here (which is badly in need of a separate site, redesigned and more resources added so bare with me on the stiff layout!). Looking back at the beginning I'm glad I didn't stay on my graphic design course. Branching out into illustration and switching my focus has been everything I wanted in an illustration career and I love every minute of it.
This above image is from my very first illustration job - where someone sought me out and actually paid me for it! I did these illustrations while I was 9 months pregnant and I was so scared I'd go into labor and miss the deadline. Luckily I finished them in time. And as you can see, my style has changed a lot!
I love back to school time! Not because of school itself but because of the things that come along with it. Like fresh new school supplies and the promise of fall (my favorite time of the year). It's no secret that my daughter started kindergarten this year and when I walked in her school it smelled like every first day of school I had. Isn't that weird? Maybe there's some "new school smell" spray. I always find this time of year more inspiring and motivating as an artist. Not sure why but it has always been that way for me. Maybe I subconsciously feel like there's a new year/a new start ahead of me!
The above image is a promotional piece I did a few years back that got me a lot of great jobs from clients. You can see my process here.
A little monkey I created this morning for my daughter's lunch box note.
I've become addicted to twitter and you should too! It's a quick way to share thoughts and links to others, plus a way to find new artists, etc. There a quite a few on there. Are you?

I've shared
my favorite quote/verse before, but I've always loved the simple quotes from Walt Disney. Our family just got back from Disney World and at the moment I am struggling to turn back on work wise, but I picked up the above postcard while I was there. The poster of it caught my eye and it was entitled "Vision" with this quote attached: "It's kind of fun to do the impossible." - Walt Disney
I've done a few sports related illustrations but I must admit, they aren't my favorite. Not sure why though. Maybe because I'm not really a sports person (but I really enjoyed the Olympics this year). The above image is a poster for Vacation Bible School. I actually taught the year this poster was in our packet to decorate the room. That was kind of neat.
I can think of 2 rabbits I've ever illustrated and I don't even know where they are in my archives so I did a quick little post-it-note sketch :)
I love quotes about encouragement and success. I actually listed several here once. I think my "life" quote would have to be:
"When much is given, much is expected" from Luke 12:48. It reminds me why I am the way I am and why I tend to keep on working, thinking and doing for bigger and better even when I'm exhausted. I even have it on a bracelet that I wear 24/7.
This week's theme is "process". We are working on getting our Valentine's promo out this week and here is my little piece and my process.
I start out with a sketch.
I then draw everything in Illustrator.
And then I move it over to Painter where I add more depth and texture and then jump it over to Photoshop for my final file prep. Viola! And illustration :)
This little guy may look sweet and innocent but he really makes Damien looks like a boy scout. Enjoy.
Wonderful promo piece! Love all the textures and colors!
I love this Holli!
Her wart is a nice added touch! :)
