This is a Val-entine gift to all my faithful readers, guests and friends. If you have not heard of the wonderful artist William Crutchfield then shame on you but now you have so please enjoy this small and short film and you will always remember him. I was lucky enough to work with Mr. Crutchfield in 1989 when we printed this incredible puzzle to celebrate Gensler's 25 th Anniversary. Gensler is a global architecture firm that could afford to have William create the art and oversee this puzzle project and of course Jeff Wasserman of Wasserman Silk Screen Co. was able to capture the vision perfectly. This puzzle is printed on very thick acid free rag board and was cut after we did all the printing. There were a lot of colours involved and a varnish too. Quite a unique and beautiful job packaged in a nice wooden slide top box and we silkscreened Gensler on the lid in 2 colours as well. Of course I received one as a printers proof signed by this wonderful artist William Cruthchfield. You will see why I adore his work so much he creates a lot of little buildings ;)

Valgal, this is great and thanks for exhibiting it. Now I know what (the type of buildings) that you love and I know what kind of gift to send whenever the ocassion arises for one. Whether it is xmas, or valentine, or whatever it is, you know I must always call on you to say hello. Happy valentines day!
my favorites are the three windows and the train heading into the star. this makes me want to draw and keep drawing, but first i need a beginner course, i really do.
♥
to my beloved fun wonderful friend val, who is a friend to me in the most special of ways. i love you val.
My submission for Illustration Friday's "wilderness" is a doodle piece on a scrap of arches paper notice the deckle edge. I call this "leave a little light on". I have lived in a lot of little houses that look like this :) 2010 valerie walsh

Hey val, I love this house and thanks for leaving the light on :o) Simply beautiful. I have to draw a bunch of houses on a page for a book I'm working on... while I was sketching I was thinking..."I wish I could whip up houses like Val!" :o)
I love it! But of course, when I came here I knew I would. I love the feeling it evokes. Thanks for letting me know about the IF image, hopefully, I've fixed it! You're the best!
I love your little house Valerie. The pointy roof made me think that maybe a good witch lives here baking magic chocolate chip cookies every day for anyone who comes by in the cold snow who just might be needing a cup of hot chocolate. It gets the imagination going.
Most of the time artists have to create in a confined perimeter. But I usually try to go beyond the boundaries any way I can get away with ;) My submission for Illustration Friday's "confined" theme is one of my dimensional paintings titled "Oriental Evening". My bridge paintings are quite popular so I have done them many ways for many people and each one is unique and yet similar. I think bridges help to break out of the confines and going outside of the frame helps too. I always put in details of life inside the windows in the form of glimpses of men and women, instruments. birds in cages, cups with tea or coffee in them and books, paintings, kitties and dogs. This one I even made some clothes on a line created from handmade paper and all the flowers are dimensional. I hope you enjoy!
Speaking of enjoyment I went with my friend Trish to see her daughter Katherine in her music group tonight at the Apple Store in Santa Monica. The name of the group is Sonos and they are so good that I want to share this with the world!!! We live on the same street and have been neighbors for years. I have watched Kath grow into a beautiful young woman so I had to go see Sonos tonight and give my support before they go back out on tour again. They have a deal on Verve Records, these kids are kicking butt! Because I know Kath so well I asked if I could have a picture with the band, a kind of "I knew them when" and I was the only one to have my pic with the band, YAY!!! They are amazing and you must click on to this word: kings of maybe and you can see what I am talking about. There are no instruments only voices in this group. Awesome!

Hey dood! What a lovely group! You look so very proud to be standing by your sweet kath...how cute is that!? I am totally diggin' that kid behind you with the red hair, ha! He looks way fun~ I'm heading over to KOM to check them out right now!
(I've been MIA lately...lots going on around here...kinda stressful, but when things calm down I'll fill you in...) ;o) xo
The singing group is wonderful and I am passing the youtube site to my sixteen year old grandson who is part of a small singers group. Those singers will inspire these Canadian kids I am certain. And of course as always I enjoy your houses with interpretations to IF. Lovely work!
Wonderful post! I love your houses and bridges. It is impossible to get enough of them. The SONOS group looks quite amazing and the redhead reminds me of our son in law the drummer/sculptor before his hair began to "peak" at an older age.
it is truly magnificent, big is the effect of space created by the double bridge, and great the contrast with the interior lighted houses, delightful details of the linen that comes out from the frame!!! Thanks for your precious advices, they were very revealing for me. un abbraccio Vitti
Wow! On both accounts!! Love your picture with its wonderfully romantic quality (the underwear on the line is a lovely touch)!! The group is fantastic - such a creative approach and very entertaining! Good luck to them! Thanks for sharing!
Hey Val! I'm loving the bridge! Love the contrasting colors and the puple mountains and the sky.... What the heck!!! I love it all! :o) You are such a talent, and such a sweetheart! You look like part of the band. I'm going to check out kings of maybe right now.
i don't wonder anymore why your bridges are quite popular :) and i always look forward to seeing each of their uniqueness. and also i love when you make three dimensional-those are one of my favorites.
and Sonos, lovely group and really great sound. you look great in the picture valerie :)
Oh, I love the drama of the illustration! Happy New Year! It looks like you're off to a great start with some wonderful music from this band of young ones! :)
so many times all i can say is 'oh val'. i am constantly amazed and in awe of what you do.
i blew this up and i am ready to jump off that little dock, no questions asked. the world you see and create is safe and silly and always super magical.
and that photo of you. everyone: this is my good friend valerie walsh! isn't she just a total doll?
You might be wondering where the house is? This is the big blue house, home to wondrous things, mystery and big time beauty. Where life and death swirl in the icy depths.
I made this painting for the program when John's brother Phil Hartman died in 1998.
John asked me to create this painting quickly so it is not the greatest work of art but I tried to make it about the content and focus on the message. Phil loved the sky, he had a plane and he loved the ocean and he had a boat. He adored Catalina and went there often. This image is what I thoughthis children would like, the idea that we all come together and swimand play in the big ocean as a family with abandon and until then, we join each other in the sea of mind. The father, mother and children all together jumping and feeling joy, the oneness. The children are grown now and they are so beautiful it hurts my eyes. All of our hearts are joined forever. They will live and grow and the renewal is taking place within and without. Sweet Graham Nash played two songs for thisbeautiful and small private ceremony. I have included the song"Simple Man" that he played for us. My submission for Illustration Friday's "Renewal" theme is the circle. When it makes no sense we must find the beauty in the aftermath.
We had a drink to Phil last night and he was with us.
Very touching piece, I love the way the light is shining on the dolphins, I think it's a lovely piece and fits with this weeks theme beautifully. Thanks for sharing!
It is beautiful. Your husband was given a wonderful gift in you and your joyful spirit. God must have known he would need you.
We remember Phil with fondness. He was one of our favorite actors and although our knowledge of him was simply what we saw on the screen, we felt sadness at his passing. Great talents are always missed.
So many times I've thought of Phil and how that is for you and John. I've had a letter in my head and heart to send you for awhile now about that... Everything about this post is so beautiful...my eyes teared up. I so get your heart, girl.- It's so wonderful that John has someone like you, and your heart, to count on, love and be present for. Healing is a lifelong journey with loss like this...you both will always have my heartfelt friendship and healing thoughts-- xo
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
Dear Anon, you might have noticed that it is quite rare that I comment on comments because I have to spend some time in the real world too ;) but the reason my posts are better now is little by little I am revealing more of myself which is not easy for me. I would prefer to stay somewhat on the private side but yes, that is a bore. Having said that I try to strick a balance of reality and privacy so that the peeps that want to read about my adventures have something to sink their teeth into. I am really just a humble art blog though :D Thank you for your kind comment and maybe some day you will reveal yourself ;)
De los momentos tristes salen obras mágicas y maravillosas como esta, hecha con mucho amor y sentimiento y eso se refleja en la ilustración que parece estár viva. Es una belleza. Besos.
Het Val, The first thing I did think of was "where's the house? :o) After I read your few paragraphs, I sat here speechless and typeless (if that's a word) Wow what a wonderful tribute to Phil. I had no idea that he was your brother-in-law. I know he's looking down with pride and joy. Thanks for your vulnerability and for sharing your wonderful work with us. I always scroll through the submissions looking for your little blue ribbon house. Love your big blue house and all it's wondrous things. God bless you and your loved ones in 2010 Val.
Oh my! I didn't know you were related to him! What a very beautiful post and gorgeous piece of art. Sometimes the best art comes when we don't have much time to do it. Especially if our soul is involved deeply in the process.
Many entanglements are affairs of the heart. It is a little hard to see but there is a man serenading a woman in this dimensional painting and he is wooing her with his song. "Mediterranean Night" is my submission for Illustration Friday's "entangled theme.

Beautiful illustration, and you so captured the romance in this piece. I also enjoyed watching your HGTV video. . . your resin house clock is gorgeous!
This piece really draws me in. I want to dip my toes in that sea. Really gorgeous, gorgeous. And those entangled hearts. Aaah, its nice to get tangled up every once in a while.
Ooh! Ooh! My first two second glance at this reminded me of that beautiful theater up there in Santa Barbara. Not sure of the name (although, i'm sure it's something simple like..Santa Barbara Theatre!). Do you know the one I'm talking about. There are sweet little sitting areas on the sides of the theater...very sweet setting.
This is just BEAUTIFUL!! It's so rich and wonderfully illustrated! You make me want to jump right into this show stopper for sure! Great colors that just pop off the page! Great work!!!
beautiful vue on the sea and beautiful Val in the video ! Next year from 15 April to 15 July 2010 two my sculptures will be exposed to New York: Agora Gallery 530 West 25th street Chelsea. An exhibition of French artists !
My submission for Illustration Friday's "hollow" is not an illustration but rather a clay pot that is comprised of 4 clay slabs that make 4 separate buildings and a hollow interior. It really isn't hollow but filled with the sky and stars. This vase is owned by a longtime collector of my art and I only made a few of them as they are large and can break and indeed one broke during an earthquake and one got broken that was in transit. Considering all the time and work it left me with a hollow feeling :(

I'm still trying to figure out how you do this wonderful stuff!. You are just so amazing! I the whimsical nature of the piece and the color is just so GREAT! Very nice.
Magnificent once again from multitalented Val. I love that there are stars on the inside of this gorgeous piece... and am sad that there was breaking news about two of the three.
i was asking myself what your artwork's made of...until i read your post. beautiful vase actually and i am sorry to hear that 2 of them was broken. i like the second one most especially....
What a wonderful vase! And its so fantastic that they are filled with the sky. Great idea, its like they are open to the Beyond & tomarrow. While still being personal and today.
Sometimes it can feel like you are living on shaky ground, especially in California. Here is my silly little submission for Illustration Friday's "shaky" theme. I have another pressing deadline right now so that's why this is minimal at best. It reminds me of the many earthquakes I have experienced in my life, falling debris, shaky buildings and usually your utilities get shut off for a few days while they restore power and water. As long as no one gets hurt they are a unique experience but every once in a while people talk about the Big one coming...
A bit of SHAKY trivia regarding music icon Neil Young, Neil has directed 5 movies, including 2008 critically acclaimed feature length documentary CSNY/Deja Vu. His nom de cine as a filmmaker is Bernard Shakey, the mythical founder of Shakey pictures.

Even if you say it's minimal, this illustration is fantastic! The color combination is great, and I love how the buildings seem to sway and move. The open windows, door, and the cracks are nice details.
love the blue...love the image...very good response! My first quake (I'm from Louisiana) was outside of Los Angeles in the middle of the night--a "very small one" they said but enough to knock me out of bed screaming! you do great work!
so cool illustration but it must be a srong building because. they're still hanging on like us human beings:)or maybe you have your structural engineer side of you.
Cool houses! They definitely look a little shaky :)Poor little guys...earthquakes are scary! Have only felt one myself when I was visiting my sister in San Diego several years ago. At least here in KY where we have tornadoes, we can go to the basement! Nowhere to go in an earthquake! :) Cute houses, Val & I love the blue. Thanks for sharing.
Well it certainly represents the theme... although I have never experienced an earthquake (thankfully)! Thanks for sharing and good luck with your deadlines.
This is super cute, whimsical style yet beautifully rendered! I don't mind staying in, I have got a magic wand to fix it! Happy Thursday, Friday and weekends to you dear Valerie:) How's your summer over there?
Val - that's a brilliant interpretation of shaky - a leaning tower of your houses waiting for an earthquake.I've never experienced one, thankfully. Sorry not to have appeared sooner but for some reason IE8 on my new PC freezes up on your blog. I've made it this time though, with a bit of patience. Don't you just love pooters!
hello dear friend. i know you are out straight. no doubt you'll get it all done. i miss miss you. but then i get to smile at you through your magical houses.
My submission for Illustration Friday's "Drifting" is one of my Marisol Hidden Treasure greeting cards. It has a gift certificate inviting the recipient to dinner. So after you drift, you have dinner, how perfect.

you know what i really like, val? i'd know your work anywhere. and whenever whereever i'd see it, i'd lean over to the person beside me and i'd say, 'this is the work of valerie walsh, she is my friend..."
always wanted to drift in a gondola, drink wine and snack on calamari then dine some where fine by the moonlight in Venice. Thanks for the invite to dream. michael dailey
My submission for Illustration Friday's "unfold" theme is a diecut valgal card that celebrates love. The message is clear but the card is a little unique in the design. I love making cuts and folds, it makes the card a bit more special. I have included a few views here: 1.the original illustration and a copy of the card 2. closeups of the image 3. card folds and unfold.

Thank you for your comment, Val, and doubly so because I got to click on your name and land on your website. I've seen your works in IF, and you have entered another great illo for this week.
Is the original illo rendered with markers? I thought I saw hints of airbrushing similar to Copics so it made me wonder.
Oh Val, How clever and brilliant is this. your cards are so dang amazing!!!! Each one just blows my mind. You must create all the time. I totally understand though hee he e hee hee! This is so grand and wonderful. Great card Val!!!
