1. Word of the Day: Beneficence

Today’s word of the day at Dictionary.com is beneficence – the practice of doing good, or an act of charity. So, I figured having learnt a new word, I’d try putting that word into action. So, to show some beneficence. Hmm. I looked around the toyroom. Toys were playing, toys were snoozing, toys were chatting. Who could benefit from my beneficence?

Then I saw Primula, the most giving and caring of all the toys. Giving and caring and sharing are what she’s all about – so perhaps it was her turn to be on the receiving end. I raced over to a group of stuffies (stuffed animals for those of you not in the know) and whispered my suggestion. Then we crept across the toyroom to where Primula was busy tidying a shelf.

‘Ahem, Primula,’ I said. ‘We have something for you.’
“For me?” Primula was surprised.
‘Yes. You are always so busy helping us that we want to do something for you.’ I turned to the other toys. ‘Now one, two three.’

And what do you think we did? We launched into a song. One of Primula’s favourites – Don’t Worry, Be Happy.

Soon, Primula was joining in, which was lovely, but still, I think she most enjoyed hearing all of us sing for her, and she certainly ahs had an extra spring in her step ever since.

Beneficence. When was the last time you tried it?

Sneak Peek

I have been enjoying a little sewing frenzy while waiting for feedback on book sketches. Some of these guys look a little Christmassy, which may seem a bit early but I will soon be immersed in painting and there won't be any time for sewing then.

These little guys will be listed in my Etsy shop soon along with a few others. I will let you know the exact day once I have finished a few more. Here is a sneak peek:

Sylvain

Coco

Emile

Leopold

Pepin

Philbert

Beatrice

Sparky Mail

I got a postcard from Sparky last week. He is obviously havng a great time living with Roz and even sent me a very glitzy keyring - that cat can't resist shiny things.
Oh and thanks Roz, for packaging it up and mailing it :)

Ever since I did this:
I have been wanting to do this:

Little Red got out of bed..

Today she was going to visit her granny, and it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day....

Time to get dressed...

She felt like she was being watched....

Yikes!

I had so much fun making these and already thinking about making some more fairytale characters - Goldilocks and the three bears or the three little pigs would be great (a lot of sewing though!) I wanted to make the wolf look ratty and dishevelled, so I left the raw edges of the fabric showing. I also sewed into his tail quite a bit and left a lot of dangling threads, all in the name of art, I will have you know and not from sheer laziness :) These are the kind of things I like to make when I am not too busy with work. My son thinks that it is a nice mummy thing to do - and I quite agree :)

One Year!

This is what I wrote in my first post a year ago:

"I am hoping that this blog will encourage me to keep being creative outside of drawing and painting, which I do an awful lot of."

I was nervous about starting this blog, unsure where it would lead or even if anyone would ever read it. I can't imagine life without it now. It has become such a wonderful connection to so many of you that I now consider as friends. I love reading what everyone else is up to, looking at all the beautiful things you have made and I am constantly inspired.

If it wasn't for this blog I wouldn't be part of Illustration for Kids, a group that is really important to me. I no longer feel so isolated working as an illustrator and we have become good friends.

Taking part in Illustration Friday has pushed me to try different things (okay, I keep using those luggage tags, I can't stop myself!) but working on different themes is really fun and I love that feeling of not quite knowing what the end result will be. My little stuffed guys would probably have never seen the light of day but most importantly, I wouldn't have got to know so many amazing, talented people.

So, to say thank you for always being encouraging and inspiring I would like to do a little giveaway. I was inspired by Sandy over at Art Tea Life who gave away two of her beautiful mini quilts as valentines.

I was going to paint a luggage tag but I was in a sewing mood so will have to save that for another time. I don't have a mini quilt to give away but I do have Sparky:

A bit rough around the edges but full of heart. If you would like Sparky to come and live with you, leave me a comment. On Valentine's day, all the names will get mixed up and my trusty assistant, otherwise known as my son will pick a name (he is also my fashion consultant and felt that Sparky HAD to have polka dot pants.) He stands 8 inches tall in his unstockinged feet.

This is fun!
