1. Still Rippling

With the new cap on the BP oil leak…  maybe we’ll finally see the end of the oil gushing into the ocean, but the clean up is far from over!  Thankfully there has been progress.
Great things are happening and Ripple is one of them!  Kelly Light and her daughter, with the help of hundreds of talented illustrators have raised almost $8000 dollars!
In July, Ripple has been celebrating  “GREAT AMERICAN ILLUSTRATOR” MONTH.” Stop by and check out all the great art work !

This is my forth entry and will be heading to Ripple soon…. keep an eye out!

3. Children’s Book Illustrators Creating a RIPPLE in the Gulf

Children’s book illustrator Kelly Light recently launched RIPPLE, a cooperative of illustrators making small sketches in exchange for a donation to a non-profit effort in the gulf.

“A small sketch, a small donation, each small act helps. Together we can cause a ripple in the oil-soaked waters of the gulf.”

Most sketches are just $50 each. You must be the first to email RIPPLE to claim a particular sketch, wait for confirmation that you are the first, then make a donation to a gulf non-profit and provide receipt proof within the hour. The schedule of illustrators is posted so you can be ready to pounce!

Illustrators to come include Dan Santat, Jarrett Krosoczka, Pascal Campion, and later today–Mo Willems.

So head on over to RIPPLE and buy an original piece of art!

4. Ripple: Together We Can Help

Hey all y’all!

Just letting you know that the piece you see below (which I did for Ripple (and Illustration Friday) is a 5″ x 7″ print and still available to anyone who wants it by helping the Ripple cause. It was sold once, but it being a print, I have more.  Just follow the instructions given on the Ripple blog’s sidebar and I’ll happily send it your way (card #586). Thus far, Kelly Light & all the illustrators involved have raised over $6K to help the animal victims of the Gulf oil spill.  Check out all the other artists/illustrators’ pieces there as well.  Thanks for your support! : )

5. My Contribution to Ripple

I've been so inspired by Kelly Light's blog Ripple. It's amazing how it has snowballed. I've donated/bought about four painting already. I've lost control. I finally got my sketch card finished. It's about 5 1/2" x 5" and is an original color pencil painting. You can get it here for a $10 donation. What a deal!

6. Own an original for a (bird) song

If you'd like to own an original painting of mine, head on over to the Ripple blog and purchase one of the above beauties for a $10 donation.

Why am I doing this—selling originals for $10? Because if it helps draw attention to Ripple so that more visitors come more frequently and purchase more ART. If I help Ripple to succeed at that, it's worth it!!

We are doing this to help the animal victims of the Gulf Coast oil spill disaster. Being so far away from the part of the country where this tragic event is happening and feeling helpless to do anything helpful of merit is not a good feeling. THIS is something I/we can do, to not only draw attention to the issue itself, but to draw eyeballs and open some wallets to help those poor beings who are losing their homes.

When you really stop to think about what is happening, doesn't it make you nauseous? I read somewhere, someone said "Too bad it is not people dying, because at least then, something would get done." I bristled at the thought of that, and spit that thought out of my mind like a bad oyster. But you know what? After the sentence settled in my mind, I realized how effective it was in putting this in perspective. I mean, think about it. How long did it take for REACTION, for HELP? And even NOW, the situation is so horrific - it is beyond comprehension not that something like this could happen, but that in the midst of a high-level ecological disaster, beaurocracy and big oil money can block truly fixing this problem. While our wildlife is suffering and dying, and out of that will come grave consequences for our natural ecological system. This disaster could actually be a big catalyst to bringing about change the ecosystem. And NOT in a GOOD WAY. We MUST do what we can do to help.

I am a confirmed optimist and cannot leave this post on a sour note. You know who is impressing me these days? Kevin Costner. He invested $24 million into this water-cleaning invention over ten years ago. No one bought it for years and years. Oil companies looked the other way. Until NOW. I mean talk about cool -- THIS is cool. The guy's a modern-day hero. Thank you, Kevin.

7. Illustration Friday: Ripple

I feel happy that many of the people that collect my dimensional paintings usually say "Do what you want to do". I love that but have learned that there can be that very small percentage of folks that can be "difficult to please" :) This has prompted me to always make a little colour study or maquette of the image so that they can have a chance to decide they like or change my vision. This is a little (very rough) colour pencil study for a dimensional piece I have been commissioned to create and I am pretty excited because this is a place that we drove up to quite by accident and discovered and I always felt it would make a lovely place to paint. My submission for Illustration Friday's "Ripple" theme is titled "The Secret Fountain".

8. Illustration Friday: “Ripple”

“Ripple” is the word prompt for this week’s Illustration Friday, but it’s also the project (Ripple) that illustrator Kelly Light started to raise funds to help the animal victims of the Gulf oil spill. Please go there to check out the many contributions by artists & illustrators to this project.

9. Ripple

The tragedy of the gulf coast mess has all of us feeling helpless and yes, completely horrified. Artist Kelly Light has decided to do something about it! Kelly has created a project that creates a bridge for all of us artists to help in a way that may seem small at first, but is very BIG in heart, and the movement is growing! The project is called "Ripple" and allows artists to donate artworks. Then, for a $10 donation, anyone may 'purchase' the mini-masterpiece!

> Purchase my first donation to Ripple here.
> For details on the tech specs of the piece, please check the PBJ blog.

11. On a Roll!

Cleanup at the Gulf

I worked on another illo referencing the oil spill...with a more hopeful and positive spin. I'd like to include this one in my porfolio so a critique would be awesome!

Thanks!

12. The Ripple Effect

Engulfed

I checked out Kelly Light's blog, called Ripple, as suggested by Creative Cup's Suzanne Del Rizzo. Kelly is creating awareness for the oil spill in the Gulf, a very worthy cause.

13. The Ripple effect!!

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to let you know about this fantastic blog I came across called Ripple. It was created by Kelly Light, another great Children's Book Illustrator. She came up with the most creative way to help raise funds for the animals that have been effected by the Gulf oil spill disaster. Illustrators from around the world  donate small artcards that may be purchased with the donation of $10 to a variety of animal rescue organizations. Brilliant or what??!!
I designed this pelican illustration for her site.
It is a great way to be proactive and feel a little less helpless.
As Kelly so eloquently states on her blog,"our small actions together will ripple outward".
I hope you will pop over to her site and take a look!! :)

And please pass it on!

14. Make the Ripple a Wave

I don’t know of anyone who isn’t aware of  the oil spill in the Gulf, but do you know how to do something about it?  Though I live off the Gulf Coast, I felt removed from the situation… reading about the oil’s progression and tsk tsk-ing those who drag their feet in it’s resolution. So what can we do?

It takes someone like Kelly Light and her daughter to begin a movement!

They have created a blog called Ripple where you can purchase an Artist Trading Card and the donations will go directly to the cause. Each sketchcard on the blog is $10.00. The $10.00 is a donation to help the animal victims of the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill. Every penny is donated. The two Non-Profits that are benefitting are The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies and The International Bird Rescue Research Center.

This crisis is so heart wrenching and it’s the innocent who are suffering! Please won’t you visit the Ripple blog and donate. If you are an artist perhaps you want to donate your work in the form of an art card. The information for doing so is on the Ripple blog.

I’ve created two cards. One will be on it’s way to a kind person in Hawaii on Monday the other, a sea turtle,  will go up on the Ripple blog and will be for sale along with the other artist created cards.

Ripple A small sketch- a small donation-each small act helps!
