With the new cap on the BP oil leak… maybe we’ll finally see the end of the oil gushing into the ocean, but the clean up is far from over! Thankfully there has been progress.
Great things are happening and Ripple is one of them! Kelly Light and her daughter, with the help of hundreds of talented illustrators have raised almost $8000 dollars!
In July, Ripple has been celebrating “GREAT AMERICAN ILLUSTRATOR” MONTH.” Stop by and check out all the great art work !

I've been so inspired by Kelly Light's blog Ripple. It's amazing how it has snowballed. I've donated/bought about four painting already. I've lost control. I finally got my sketch card finished. It's about 5 1/2" x 5" and is an original color pencil painting. You can get it here for a $10 donation. What a deal!
The soft free-fall of a feather swoops from side to side, being carried by it's own momentum, soon to be swirled into the ripples of a pond gathering it's momentum from the tossing of a pebble.
Two quiet forces of nature equaling a feeling of peace.
But wait...what if a foreign substance like crude oil causes the ripples?
Friends, this week Illustration Friday is asking us to participate in a fundraiser for the animals in the Gulf left to fend for themselves in this more than sticky, life-threatening situation. As artists, we have been asked to make an ATC that can be sold for $10, all proceeds going to either The Institute For Marine Mammal Studies (http://www.imms.org/) or The International Bird Rescue Research Center (http://www.ibrrc.org/). Every penny raised will go to these organizations. When the card sells we are emailed the name of the buyer/donor and we sign them and mail them with our thanks and blessings.

I don’t know of anyone who isn’t aware of the oil spill in the Gulf, but do you know how to do something about it? Though I live off the Gulf Coast, I felt removed from the situation… reading about the oil’s progression and tsk tsk-ing those who drag their feet in it’s resolution. So what can we do?
It takes someone like Kelly Light and her daughter to begin a movement!
They have created a blog called Ripple where you can purchase an Artist Trading Card and the donations will go directly to the cause. Each sketchcard on the blog is $10.00. The $10.00 is a donation to help the animal victims of the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill. Every penny is donated. The two Non-Profits that are benefitting are The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies and The International Bird Rescue Research Center.
This crisis is so heart wrenching and it’s the innocent who are suffering! Please won’t you visit the Ripple blog and donate. If you are an artist perhaps you want to donate your work in the form of an art card. The information for doing so is on the Ripple blog.
I’ve created two cards. One will be on it’s way to a kind person in Hawaii on Monday the other, a sea turtle, will go up on the Ripple blog and will be for sale along with the other artist created cards.

I wake up every morning wondering whether the flow of oil is going to slow today. Wondering what the ultimate price is that we'll pay for our oil dependence. Will B. P. eventually figure out how to cap the poison gushing into the Gulf and when (if) they do, we'll it be business as usual?
I sincerely hope that all the people picketing
B. P. and the rage at this environmental disaster will continue until the world and especially this country realizes that we need affordable, clean energy.
Please understand that I'm not blaming
B. P. alone, or the government for failing to regulate the industry. I'm blaming all of us. We've sold out for convenience. Need something at the grocery? Gotta run to the bank? I jump in my SUV and think nothing about it. Okay, it's a small SUV and gets pretty good mileage and I try to run all my errands at once so I maximize a tank of gas.
But, I'm afraid we're still years away from realizing the sacrifices we need to make.
I remember when
Jimmy Carter was laughed out of office for even suggesting that we needed to make hard choices in stemming our thirst for oil. We were incensed when gas prices in
1978 rose to an average of (gasp!)
$.63 a gallon!! But, we got over it and it was "business as usual." We're slowly realizing the price of our indifference more than 3 decades ago.
Not sure what I hope to accomplish with this blog post. Maybe just add my 2 cents to the anger and disgust for the shameful way we're ignoring the facts concerning our fragile world.
