Early today we posted an article about health care reform by Lawrence J. Schneiderman, M.D, a Professor Emeritus at UCSD Medical School and Visiting Scholar in the Program in Medicine and Human Values at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. His new book, Embracing Our Mortality: Hard Choices in an Age of Medical Miracles, looks at end of life decisions from both the medical and philosophical perspectives and advises on how to best make tough decisions. In the excerpt below Schneiderman emphasizes the importance of communicating your end-of-life preferences.
One of my patients, Earl Adams (not his real name), an African-American in his late seventies, was afflicted with severe Parkinsonism. Not only could he no longer play the organ for Sunday church services, he could barely move and relied on his devoted wife for even the most basic needs. She got him out of bed in the morning, helped him to the toilet, bathed him, fed him, kept him upright during the day, and returned him to bed at night. So successful was she at these tasks that whenever she brought him to see me he was always clean-shaven and meticulously dressed, complete with jacket and tie. (more…)

by Suzanne Fisher Staples. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, to be released spring of 2008. (advance review copy) This is the third book in the stories of the life of Shabanu, a young woman living with her family in the desert of Pakistan. In the first book Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind Shabanu has come of age and had to chose between following her heart or agreeing to her father's matching her in a
I pulled a name out of my coffee cup today (after cleaning it out, of course) and guess who won my three-book set of Anne of Green Gables books? Heather PNR come on down!!! YAY!!! Just shoot me your snail mail Heather baby and I'll get you your books.
I have to review the winners from December and November here too: Karen won Isabel Allende's The Stories of Eve Luna. And Jill won The Splendor
First let me apologize for not announcing the winner of my December drawing. It is one of the things that got lost in the holiday madness over here. I was offering my copy of Isabel Allende's The Stories of Eve Luna. This morning I pulled a name from my Kikombe cha umoja and guess what? Karen won!! Congratulations Karen! Send me your snail mail and I'll drop the book in the mail to you.
I am
I was visiting The Heartful Bogger and I really like her idea of a holiday giveaway. Here's what I'd like to do. The first 5 people who comment on this post will get their choice of an ATC or an assortment of 3 notecards. The ATC can either be a subject of your choice, or you can let me surprise you! Of course it would be an original work of art, not a copy. The cards, however, would be laser copies. This is just a little way of paying it forward to my friends who stop by. I wish I could give all of you a gift, but I think that would surely take a lot of time (and resources!)
Please give me a month to respond with the goods if you choose ATC's. The cards can be shipped right away.
Good luck! I'm happy you're here :)
I have had this paperback copy of The Stories of Eva Luna for years. I really love everything Allende has written and this is a really good collection. She has given us twenty three short stories whispered in the ear of Eva Luna's lover Rolf Carle. In the long night he asked her for a story "you have never told anyone before" and these haunting, captivating tales rolled out. If you have never
This month I am giving away my copy of The Splendor of Silence to one lucky commenter on my post about this month's Pay It Forward Book Exchange.
And the winner is... Jill!!! Send me your snail mail Jill so I can pass on your book.
Check on the other book give aways over at Overwhelmed With Joy!
I'll be giving away another book the first week of December and every following month until I run
This month for my Pay It Forward Book Exchange I am offering The Splendor of Silence by Indu Sundaresan. I reviewed this book in a September post, as part of the MotherTalk blog tour. It is a fascinating page turner about an Indian American woman named Olivia. She receives a mysterious trunk from her deceased mother's family just a few days after her father's death. As she unpacks the trunk she
I had such a busy weekend I never got around to posting the winner to my October Pay It Forward winner. I featured the book Sugar Cage by Connie May Fowler. This morning I cleaned out my coffee cup after the second cup and put in the names of all the Sugar Cage post commenters (not myself of course). Guess who's name I pulled out?
(Drum Roll...)
Briggie from Jehovah Roi, come on down!! You
This month's give away book is Sugar Cage by Connie May Fowler. This novel is set in 1945 in southern Florida. Inez Temple, a Haitian woman working as a hotel maid meets Rose and her new husband Charlie and their friends Junior and Eudora. Inez reads their future in the bottom of Rose's tea cup and finds the ominous prediction to be carried out in surprising ways over the next twenty years in their marriages, carriers and children. Read more reviews here and here.
I found this captivating novel on a book share shelf and I would love to pass it on to one you! I got the idea for this from Overwhelmed with Joy. I plan to give away a book to one of my readers in the first week of every month until I run out of books. Here's how it is played:
1) Once a month I'll pick a book to give away to one lucky reader (you don’t have to have a blog to enter). It may be a book that I’ve purchased new or used, or it may be a book that someone has shared with me that I really like. It’ll probably be a paperback, just to make things easier, but no guarantees.
2) All you have to do to enter the giveaway is leave me a comment on this post. I'll draw names out of a hat on Sunday, October 14.
3) If you’re the lucky winner of the book giveaway and you have your own blog I ask that you,in turn, host a drawing to give that book away for free to one of your readers, after you’ve had a chance to read it (let’s say, within a month after you’ve received the book). If you mail the book out using the media/book rate that the post office offers it’s pretty inexpensive. If you're a non-blogger who has won the book, please consider donating the book to your local library or shelter after you're done with it.
4) If you’re really motivated and want to host your own “Pay It Forward” giveaway at any time, feel free to grab the button below to use on your own blog. Just let Overwhelmed know so she can publish a post plugging your giveaway and directing readers your way!
The Pay It Forward Book Exchange is designed to encourage people to read, to share good books, to possibly get you out of your reading comfort zone, and to get fun stuff in the mail instead of just bills!
So just leave me a comment if you'd like to be part of this month's drawing. Remember, you have until next
Sunday, October 14!! And stop by
Overwhelmed to see what other books are being given away this month.
First of all, apologies to Karen and Becky for forgetting to link to your giveaways. The week ran away before I could even notice it was gone. Next month, I promise, I'll be more attentive.
This month's winners of the Pay it Forward giveaway are:
Cassie Was Here: Jim D.
The Deep: Mrs. Coulter
Send me your addresses, folks, and I'll get those books winging your way.

This month I am giving away Copper Crown by Lane von Herzen. It's a really great book that I loved reading. I reviewed it here.
And the winner is.... Lorie!! Lorie's Stitch in Time is her blog. Send me your snail mail Lori and I will post your book ASAP. Come back in the first week of every month for another book give away everyone!
It's the beginning of another month, and that means it's time for another Pay It Forward Book Exchange! Overwhelmed with Joy started this fun trend last month. I plan to give away a book to one of my readers in the first week of every month until I run out of books. Here's how it is played:
1) Once a month I'll pick a book to give away to one lucky reader (you don’t have to have a blog to enter). This month I am giving away Copper Crown by Lane von Herzen. I picked this book up on the share shelf at school last year and I loved it. Here's what I said about it in my blog review:
..."the writing is so beautiful it won me over quickly. The dialog and the descriptions of the landscape roll like a song. The characters are clear and tender. The truths here run deep and powerful. The author lays out a part of the heartbreaking, gut wrenching reality of America’s history. You will come away from this book a different person."
Here's what the publisher says on the cover:
“At its heart is the story of Cass and Allie, two young women – one white, one black – sharing a friendship amid the divisive and violent racism of rural 1913 Texas. But when a murder turns the town of Copper Crown into an inferno of lynching and riots, Cass and Allie make a startling decision – to strike out on their own in search of a life where a person’s heart, not race, is what counts.”
This is a really fabulous book. All you have to do to
be in the drawing to win it is leave a comment on this post before
Saturday, September 8!
It's September 1. I hope you all have fantastic plans for the last weekend of summer and that you have beautiful weather to enjoy.
September 1 means it's time for the September Pay It Forward Book Exchange. This month, I have two great titles for you--both with something extra.
In the Middle Grade category: An autographed copy of Caroline Hickey's Cassie Was Here (my review). That's right. If you win a copy of this book, Caroline will sign it for you and send it to you herself!
In the Young Adult category: The Deep, by Helen Dunmore. I have no idea when this book will be released in the States. The first volume in the series, Ingo, is available in stores now. The second, The Tide Knot, will be released in February. The Deep? Probably 2009.
So, if you'd like a copy of Cassie Was Here or The Deep, then leave a comment. The drawing will be held a week from today. Make sure you check back next Saturday to see if you've won. (Heather! You won a copy of If a Tree falls at Lunch Period, but I can't find you.)

If you've posted your giveaway, let me know and I'll link you up!

This is the first time I am participating in
Overwhelmedwithjoy's Pay It Forward Book Exchange. I posted
the other day that I would be giving away my copy of
Annie Dillard's novel The Living to a randomly drawn name of anyone who wanted to be part of the fun. Today I had my youngest draw names out of a book box and the winner is...
beckyb at In the Pages...!! Congratulations! As soon as I get a snail mail address I'll be sending it right along. I'll be doing another Pay It Forward Book Exchange on September first and every first of the month after that so check back for another round. Anyone who wants to play is welcome to join in!
Cloudscome (A Wrung Sponge) has brought an idea whose time has come into the kidslitosphere. (Original idea from a blog called overwhelmedwithjoy.)
Here are the details. I must admit upfront that I've changed the original rules to fit with the kidlit book world. (Changes to the rules are in red print.)
1) Once a month I'll pick a book (or two) to give away to one (or two) lucky reader(s) (you don't have to have a blog to enter). It may be a book that I've purchased new or used, or it may be an ARC or a review copy of a book I've recently reviewed. (If you receive an ARC from me, please don't sell it online after you've read it.)
2) Details on how you can enter to win will be listed below.
3) I took out rule #3, because I want people who don't maintain blogs to play. However, please feel free to pay forward the same book after you've read it on your own blog if you do keep one.
4) If you're really motivated and want to host your own "Pay It Forward" giveaway at any time, feel free to grab the button above to use on your own blog. Just let her know so she can publish a post plugging your giveaway and directing readers your way!
Let's get some books zipping about the kidlit book world. Each month I'll pick 1-2 titles, Middle Grade or Young Adult, I think are outstanding. To kick off this month's contest, I'm offering two different books. Be sure to mention in the comments which you'd prefer. They are:
1. The Puzzling World of Winston Breen, by Eric Berlin. (ARC) I really enjoyed this book and just posted my review today.
2. Gennifer Chodlenko's newest book If a Tree Falls at Lunch Period. I'll be posting a review of this one over the weekend, but let me just tell you now that this is a book you can't put down.
Both books have a September 2007 publication date.
I'll hold a drawing on Monday, August 13.

Last month the blog Overwhelmed With Joy launched her Pay It Forward book exchange idea. Here is how she describes it:
"Most all of us love to read and get “new-to-us” books, right? And if you’re anything like me, you love winning things (what a rush), not to mention getting fun stuff in the mail! So here’s what this book exchange is all about:
1) Once a month I'll pick a book to give away to one lucky reader (you don’t have to have a blog to enter). It may be a book that I’ve purchased new or used, or it may be a book that someone has shared with me that I really like. It’ll probably be a paperback, just to make things easier, but no guarantees.
2) Details on how you can enter to win will be listed below.
3) If you’re the lucky winner of the book giveaway I ask that you, in turn, host a drawing to give that book away for free to one of your readers, after you’ve had a chance to read it (let’s say, within a month after you’ve received the book). If you mail the book out using the media/book rate that the post office offers it’s pretty inexpensive.
*Edited to add: Caroline at Food for Thought modified this rule. If you aren't a blogger or don't want to do a giveaway on your blog you can just donate the book to a library or pass it on in any way you like. The idea is to Pay it Forward.
4) If you’re really motivated and want to host your own “Pay It Forward” giveaway at any time, feel free to grab the button above to use on your own blog. Just let her know so she can publish a post plugging your giveaway and directing readers your way!
So there you have it, the Pay It Forward Book Exchange, designed to encourage people to read, to share good books, to possibly get you out of your reading comfort zone, and to get fun stuff in the mail instead of just bills!"
I love this idea so much I have to join in. This week I'll be giving away a paperback copy of Annie Dillard's

Pay it Forward Book Exchange and agree to the rules set out above. I'll do the drawing for the lucky winner on
Friday, August 10 at noon. Let's have some fun!
