Dear Flyary is a new picture book by Dianne Young, illustrated by John Martz, coming out March 1st. Kids Can Press is the publisher. John Martz created a book trailer, and somehow captured the main conflict and the adorableness of the story in only 27 seconds. Way to go, Mr. Martz!

From the Globe and Mail, December 24, 2011.
Publishing isn’t dying, it’s just becoming more animated. Los Angeles-based JibJab sees an opportunity to benefit from the emergence of digital children’s books on tablets like the iPad. They recently launched a new product line called JibJab Jr. Books. Powered by their “Starring You” technology, it allows kids to insert themselves into their storybooks. The app is free to download on the iTunes store, and comes with a starter book. Additional titles can be purchased for $7.99 individually or $3.99 as part of a monthly subscription plan.
This USA Today article discusses JibJab’s new strategy for children’s books, while this app review on Pad Gadget offers a pretty good overview of how JibJab Jr. works.
The JibJab titles don’t offer the hyper-clickable interactivity or audio narration/sound effects of other recent iPad children’s book efforts like Bill Joyce’s The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, but they have an equally compelling feature in content personalization. Right now, that’s enough to stand out from the pack, although they’ll likely need to add interactivity and sound at some point to stay competitive. Another unique aspect of the books is that JibJab is commissioning a lot of fresh voices, including many from the animation industry, to illustrate their book titles. Among the artists they’ve enlisted so far are Nate Wragg, John Martz, Brigette Barrager and Kai Wu.
(Disclosure: JibJab is a sponsor of Cartoon Brew’s 2011 Student Animation Festival.)

Cloudy Collection is excited to announce our latest special edition print set, honoring and including the inimitable Ed Emberley. There are two “Monster Parade”-themed prints available: one 8”x10” four-color letterpress made exclusively for Cloudy Collection by Ed Emberley, and the other is a set of fifteen (plus one!) 4”x6” four-color screen prints by Ed Emberley, his daughter Rebecca Emberley, S. Britt, Tad Carpenter, Maura Cluthe, Becky Dreistadt, Bob Flynn, Meg Hunt, David Huyck, John Martz, Caleb Neelon, ;Heather Ross, Souther Salazar, Bwana Spoons, and Nate Wragg.
A portion of the sales of these prints will go to Heifer International, providing reliable sources of food to women and families in developing nations, and to the Central Asia Institute, which provides books and literacy and educational opportunities to girls and women in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Get one or the other or both sets right now at Cloudy Collection!
One final reminder that I am offering original watercolour drawings as a reward for anyone who donates $25 or more to the Toronto Mini Maker Faire’s funding drive.
Funding has reached 87% with only two days to go.
And if you can’t afford $25, even one or two dollars helps. If you’ve enjoyed reading Drawn over the last six years, I consider even the smallest donation a huge personal favour. It goes a long way to help organize such a big event that promotes artists and creativity.
Trexels - Star Trek Pixel Art by John Martz and Koyama Press
I made this print with Koyama Press, featuring 235 Star Trek characters in pixelated form. Can you name them all? We’re giving away two copies to the Trekkies with the best guesses. The print debuts at MoCCA in New York this weekend, and then officially goes on sale a week from today.
Allow me to point to my own work for a change. My own online comics, loosely published under the name Machine Gum, have been the focus of regular updates for the past few weeks, and maybe you’ll enjoy them. If you’re into robots suffering from anxiety and existential crises, that is.
I’ve just updated my own site with a new redesign and plenty of new content, so I thought I’d take a moment to pimp myself here for a change.
Head on over to John Martz Illustration, and you’ll discover I have a new shop offering minicomics and prints, including prints of my contributions to the ongoing Picture Book Report project, where I’ve been illustrating Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
I’ve also just finished a new short comic story called Heaven All Day, which I’ve put online in its entirety. You can read the entire thing online, or buy a printed version in my shop. I’ll be at MoCCA in New York next weekend with copies, as well as TACF in Toronto in May.

I’m happy to announce the impending launch of this project. Metal for Monsters is a run of limited-edition stainless steel pendants being sold to raise money for UNICEF.
Each pendant features an illustration of a monster or creepy creature by some very talented folks including Drawn! contributors Jay Stephens, Adam Koford, and myself. Bucher, Jon Burgerman, Anna Chambers, Justin Hillgrove, Adam Koford, John Martz, Jay Stephens, and Brian Taylor.
Hey, it's my very first post! I feel slightly guilty that I'm not posting a new image (I posted this over a year ago on my own blog for Illustration Friday's "lost" theme) but I couldn't resist a Heroes vs. Lost challenge.
To be honest, I'm enjoying Heroes these days more than Lost, which has stagnated into something kinda boring this season.
wow.. demented sperm... cool
