You guys.
I’m so excited about this. You remember Arree Chung, right? The dude is a complete genius. He and a few friends started a company recently called Live in a Story, and the whole shebang is pretty brilliant.

Here I am in my Maxwell gear with one of Live in a Story’s wall decals.
(It was Halloween, not just another day in the library. Promise.)
(Also, more than one kid and more than one grownup have asked if that’s painted on the wall. That’s how beautiful these things are.)
People have been putting cheesy stickers on their walls forever. Let’s stop with that, ok? These are true works of art. Top-notch quality, seamless edges, and all of the texture you want from hand-painted detail. Picture book artists have a storytelling knack that can’t be contained in the pages. And why should they? As Live in a Story says, every wall is a blank canvas.

Want your decals personalized? Can do.

Kids deserve good art both in their shelves and on their walls, and Live in a Story is making it. Check it out:

Brian Won‘s owl is ridiculous, right? Well. Great news.
If you visit Live in a Story during the month of November and give them your email and address, they’ll give you this small and smart version of the owl decal. (That’s much, much easier than NaNoWriMo!)

And! If you order more than $100 of wall decals, they are giving away signed copies of Ninja!, Hooray for Hat!, and a Jannie Ho title.
Hooray for deals! Hooray for great news! Hooray for art!
(I think this calls for clicking Book Party up there.)

Hello!
I am participating in a global blog tour to bring awareness to authors and illustrators about their books. A big thanks to the talented
Maggie Smith for asking me to participate!
To answer these questions-
What is the working title of your latest book? The lastest book that I can talk about because it has already been released is
Un Beso Antes De Dormir. Spanish for, A Kiss Before Bedtime.
Where did the idea come from for the book? I really only illustrated this book.
Teresa Tellechea, the writer who is also the editor, was the one who came up with the idea.
What genre does your book fall under? Board book.

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition? That’s an interesting question! This book features babies kissing their mommies before going to sleep, so it would be lovely to have actresses playing themselves along with their babies. Since this board book has animals of all kinds living in their environments I would love for the actresses to be from all over the globe, in their native homes with their babies.
Juliette Binoche (
France), Salma Hayek (
Mexico) and Meryl Streep (
US) come to mind.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? All kinds of baby animals gently kiss their mommies goodnight.
©copyright Alicia Padrón 2013
Who is publishing your book? Ediciones SM. First Spain then Mexico.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript? Teresa was in charge of that but I will answer this in the point of view of the illustrator. I took me about 2 weeks to roughly sketch these 10 spreads plus the cover.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? There are a large selection of goodnight books like Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Baby, to name a few.
Who or what inspired you to write this book? What inspired me to illustrate this was the fact that I’m a mom and the strong love and affection I feel for my kids. I’ve mentioned this before, I feel I wouldn’t illustrate
the way I do, If I didn’t have children. Being a mom changed me to what I am today. This may sound a bit of an exaggeration to some, but seriously, I think the way I draw kids, babies (human or animals) and their parents are a reflection of how I feel.

What else about the book might pique the reader's interest? Well, here is a little secret.. I’m not sure I should say this but I know my editor Teresa wont mind, she is a sweetheart plus has complete trust in me for which I am forever grateful.
There is a tiny, little detail in one of the pages of the book that was drawn by my 11 year old daughter. She was thrilled to see the book come out with her own little illustration in it and I was even more delighted to see her face light up the first time she saw a printed copy. :o)

Tracy Bishop |
Tracy Bishop and I headed up to San Francisco last week to view the 2011 Sketchbook Tour. I forgot to enter one number into my nav system, so we ended up in the design district, right next to an amazing cafe. We had the best potato salad and avocado BLT on foccacio ever!!! Luckily after some searching, we realized our error and made our way to the studio.
We were a little shocked when we walked into the venue. It was very sterile and we weren't allowed to browse the books. You have to request two and wait to get them. We were so unprepared! It's a good thing that there were two of us to come up with names. We had a hard time remembering more than a few artist's books we wanted to see. Tracy put out a quick call on Twitter to discover some more. If you go — bring a list!

Jannie Ho's Comic Sketchbook |
I loved holding these books in my hand and seeing the line work! I was surprised how many pages there were to fill! I followed along as
Jannie Ho posted her story, but was still surprised how long it was. What a lot of work! If you missed it, you can read it
here.

Abigail Halpin's sketches! If I could wave a magic wand, I'd wish for her skills and style. Her book is beautiful!

Its been a while since I voluntarily did human kids for our mailer- anthropomorphic animals are always so much more fun. But I actually enjoyed this one and liked how it turned out.
I recently illustrated this wipe and write activity book published by Peaceable Kingdom Press.

I haven't had much time for personal projects lately but had fun playing around with the iphone's brushes app. For a time lapse of this painting, go here!
Got my latest copy of Picturebook 10 recently. Just what I needed- a little bit of inspiration and see what my fellow children's illustrators are up to.
And here is my piece!
A few things I'm working on:

- The June Collection for my digistamps line over at I {heart} Papers
- A story about two mice (and cheese, of course!)
- A book about monsters
- A book about zoo animals
My piece for the spring promo! -Jannie
I'm celebrating the release of my latest board book, The Great Matzoh Hunt, published by PSS. I wrote about the process of creating the book cover over at my blog. Hope you enjoy! -Jannie
I'm a pretty loyal fan of Adobe Illustrator but it is always a struggle trying to add textures to the work. So when I got an iphone last summer and downloaded the brushes app, it was an easy, non-threatening way to play with digital painting, pushing pixels instead of vector art.
I want to explore some more and paint with Photoshop at some point. For now, this was a great start and simply trying something else was a great lesson in what can be possible and where I would like to take my work (instead of being hindered by not knowing certain programs.) -Jannie
