APE—the Alternative Press Expo—moves to San Jose next year, and it will be held in the San Jose Convention Center, which already hosts the more mainstream Big Wow Comics Fest in April. APE will stay in its fall dates, in this case October 3-4. The dates, and more plans for the show, were revealed in a wide ranging interview with show runner Dan Vado conducted by Deb Aoki for Publishers Weekly. Although indie CAFs haven’t exactly thrived in traditional convention centers—Stumptown in Portland springs to mind—Vado has big plans to tie the comic fest in more with other local San Jose cultural events:
Undeterred, Vado is moving forward with his plans to make APE 2015 a uniquely San Jose show. APE’s new home, the San Jose Convention Center South Hall is adjacent to galleries, restaurants, and music venues, including The Art Boutiki, a gallery/comics shop/live-music venue owned and operated by Vado. With this in mind, Vado is hoping to make APE a bigger part of the San Jose art, music and culture scene.
“It’s been a goal of mine to make APE into a multi-venue event, with additional events, and programming in the nearby SoFa district in downtown San Jose, within a few blocks from the show. If we get participation from the nearby galleries, I think it’ll be an exciting opportunity to give this show a more European flavor,” said Vado.
Besides having numerous places to eat, shop, and socialize, Downtown San Jose is also home to San Jose State University, a large public library, and is easily accessible by the South Bay light rail system. “What makes Downtown San Jose unique is its immediacy and intimacy,” raved Vado. APE 2015 will be held on the weekend after First Friday, the monthly event that attracts art lovers to downtown San Jose. “I think people will be surprised at how big the art scene is in San Jose,” he said.
Aoki also reports on tentative steps towards starting some kind of new CAF in SF, as discussed at a town hall meeting several weeks ago.

It's finally open! Months in the planning with only days to execute, I'm so excited to invite you all to my very first Pop-Up Shop. Step into the imaginative world of Le Petit Elefant as I take over a small part ofWestfield Valley Fair in conjunction with Pop-Ups by SJ Made. The #LPESummerShop features new art prints, stationery, rubber stamps, stickers, mason jars, and more!
Designed by me and produced by San Jose vendor Jiminy Stitch It, I have "Shop Local. Shop Love" Clink tote bags EXCLUSIVE to the #LPESummerShop. I'll be giving away tote bags to the first 10 customers who spend over $25 both this Saturday & Sunday (August 2 & 3). Get 'em while you can! At the end of the month, I'll put the remaining for sale online.
Preparing for & opening the pop-up was probably one of the toughest challenges I've had as a small business owner, and this wall is the element I'm most proud of. Come by the shop, take a picture in front of it (or anywhere in the shop), tag me on Instagram (@lepetitelefant , #LPESummerShop) and you'll get 10% off. Weeeee!!
OK everyone, thanks for reading and visiting! I hope you'll come to the shop. This moment is huge for me, and I'm so thankful you're all here to share this crazy adventure.

We said goodbye to my friend, Devon, who's heading off to Germany this week. I'll miss her, but I'm so excited for her and her family. What an adventure! I hope she finds the time to post all about it on her blog. (Hint, hint).
We had a quick lunch in Willow Glen on Saturday. It has such a cute Main Street feel. It's also the home of my favorite children's bookstore, Hicklebee's. This week they are hosting Jon Klassen and Mac Barnett who are promoting their book, Extra Yarn. Such a clever book! To promote it, Hicklebee's covered this tree in yarn! So fun!
Aww, so sweet - thanks for posting such an adorable photo of me & Griffy :o)
The collage painting is INCREDIBLE!! We are over the moon about it. Thank you for your generosity & for sharing your talents with us in such a special gift.
daily walks & bike rides since free yoga is scarce in these parts

all so I can get to LA by Monday to 1) beat thanksgiving traffic, 2) eat free noodles to 3) support my friend & 4) watch TV with bestie. Yay priorities!
So! Honestly not my most favorite, positive craft fair experience but still a great time.
I wasn't really sure what to expect since it was 1) in San Jose (I've only vended in LA & BK), 2) in a high school gym, and 3) in San Jose. San Jose is such a strange city to me. Definitely diverse and the size of a big, major city but with the attitude of a suburb. I really don't know how that translates in the selling of handmade goods. I still don't know.
I have to admit though... a great benefit was having my parents around. I've largely operated with help from my 'good friends' so having parental units instead was an interesting change. I mean, this was my breakfast Saturday morning:
Yeah. I know, right?
One thing I definitely appreciated was the support from my friends hundreds of miles away. I was flying solo mostly (my parents left at one point or another because of boredom though I don't think they'd admit it) but the incoming phone calls, videos of monkey :), texts, photo likes on fb & emails were lovely. Such good friends!
Next to me was the most incredible 70+ year old abuela who knitted scarves, hats, etc. She did it with her eyes closed, blazing through the yarn like it ain't no thang. She had me open her medication bottle for her, which amazes me since she clearly has the hand strength to knit a mile a minute. As I handed back her pill container, I brushed against her wrinkly weathered hand & was immediately reminded of Di fara's & the 70+ y.o. pizza man in Brooklyn. I rhetorically asked my mom if that would be me & she flat out said 'no.' Honestly I don't think I'd mind.
I skipped yoga to do some work, and ended up working a lil and playing a lot. My business is suffering, Mr. Dresher!
But does it count as work when the conversation consists of animation and art and misc. geekery? I should re-evaluate... Oh, but on another note, I bumped into the lovely Ernie Duque. He told me Scott Pilgrim was amazing... YES!
We sat outside sketching kiddies playing in the fountains by Music in the Park. Sooooo hilarious.
Here's a video because I couldn't resist capturing the playful silliness :)
I arrived in San Jose yesterday morning. I went directly to the campus after driving down University Avenue in downtown Palo Alto. I rented a bike as soon as I checked into my room and got settled in.
I met a wonderful group of people yesterday afternoon during the opening session as well as during the cocktail reception and dinner. The evening closed with an inspiring speech from Dorothy Kalins, former executive editor of Newsweek, and the first woman to be named Adweek's Editor of the Year.
Tonight, I will attend the 8pm session on the Art of the Interview presented by Dick Stolley (Time, Inc.), Greg Curtis and Mark Miller (Newsweek).
Until then, I enjoy the ambiance at the University Cafe. There was a bit of a problem with the internet connection on campus but I hopped on my bike after the last session this afternoon and found this hip, comfortable & computer friendly cafe which I plan on returning to later this week.
Also a place where I've returned to after my first discovery was the Stanford University Bookstore. That place is so overwhelming with its 5 floors of books, art & office supplies, clothing and computer products to explore.
Their kids sectionwas amazing, and very busy. I definitely plan on stopping in this week and introduce myself to the buyer - if I can time it so that we're both there at the same time.
Stay tuned for more updates from Palo Alto.

I hop on a plane tomorrow morning to head to San Jose where Kane/Miller will be exhibiting at the CABE (California Association of Bilingual Education) conference.
I will be working on this week's newsletter while on the road which will include highlights from a book event that Kane/Miller co-sponsored this past weekend as well as featuring some of our authors and illustrators who will be celebrating a birthday in the next week.
Don't miss my follow-up from yesterday's meeting with one of our Australian authors and be sure to visit Felice Arena's website which has been recently revamped.

Your book is delightful. I love it. The illustrations, the font, the colors and the feel of the whole thing is fabulous. Your flash animation is a great presentation too.

Hey this book looks awesome. Have you shopped this around to any childrens book publishers? I see in a lot of their submission info pages not very nice stuff like "unless you're a proffesional writer don't try to rhyme, leave it to the proffesionals" but you're book looks like a great package!

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the kind words!
Jason - I haven't shopped this around to publishers. I may do it once I've completed the book...or I may self-publish. I'll just keep "bustin' rhymes" and see what happens!

I absolutely love this book. Can't wait to see the finished product. If you every publish it I'd have to get a copy. I have a 20 month old daughter that loves to read books and we have tons. But it's safe to say this would instantly go on her favorites list. It has all her favorite things to look at and say. So sure to be a hit wit the kids and the beautiful drawings will also be enjoyed by parents.
I’m looking forward to it! (Full disclosure: I worked for Dan for more than ten years.)
As a clarifying point, the picture on this post is of the main hall. The South Hall looks like this: http://www.larein.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fanime_southhall_map1.jpg
