1. DRIVEN to Serve our Community

A few years ago, a small church decided to ask their community how they could serve them. This community had been hit hard by the economy. So hard, that the busing to the local high school had been stopped and many of the lower grades were left without busing, too. BUT in many cases both parents needed to work, so how were parents to pick up their children from school (the ones who were too old for daycare)? What were the teens to do for the hours before their parents came home?

In answer to that need, Wellspring Community Church decided to open a teen center. The Edge soon found itself filled to the brim and within two years, serves to feed and provide for more than 100 teens every afternoon (yup, that’s 100 teens every day…imagine the amount of food they go through:D). Volunteers come to serve the snack bar, mix with the kids, and just love on them. Most volunteers are local youth leaders, some are fantastic parents, and others just have some time to spare and want to serve. There are small groups and classes. I get to  teach a writing class there once a week and these kids are so grateful! I wish I could do more. That’s when it hit me…

During the next two months (until Jan. 31, 2012), for every paperback copy of DRIVEN sold $1 will be given to The Edge so they can continue to support and serve these kids. DRIVEN can be found on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble. com (those are probably the easiest sites to pick it up at). At amazon, the PB is only $6.01. If you decide to pick up a copy as a gift for a teen or just for yourself, first Thank You! and second, please send me a note letting me know where you picked up the book, the price it sold for, and when it was purchased (so I can keep track of the monies to be sent to The Edge).

One more thing, if you’re looking for book ideas for teens this holiday season, there’s a list of great books from the NextGenWriters presenters here: NextGenWriters Books

5. A note from Risen Books…

Risen Books, DRIVEN’s publisher, has recently aligned with Holt International to help children around the world. Read more from the folks at Risen below (article from Risen Books, http://www.risenfiction.com/holt/):

READ A NOVEL, LOVE A CHILD

Risen Books Partners with Holt International to Help Orphaned Children

Your summer reading list could include a book that will help an orphan child in Africa or Latin America.

Risen Books has partnered with Holt International, a Christian organization that finds and supports permanent, loving families for children who are orphaned, abandoned or separated from families, or at serious risk of separation. Holt is a world leader in international adoption and child welfare programs that enable children to have families of their own.

For every book sold through Risen’s online store (www.risenfiction.com/store/), the publisher will donate a portion of the proceeds to Holt International to aid children in need.

“We at Holt are so pleased by our new partnership with Risen Books,” says Kim Brown, CEO and president of Holt International Children’s Services. “We truly applaud their commitment to help us serve orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children around the world.”

The founders of Risen Books have been sponsoring children through Holt since 2006. “Holt shows God’s love for humanity by caring for these precious children,” says DP Martinez, senior editor at Risen Books. “We want to raise awareness of their labor and invite our readers to get involved, not only by buying books but by sponsoring children.”

11. Online Driven Release Party

Driven releases in paperback today (3/1/11). Copies available at Amazon.com, Risen Fiction and Barnes and Noble.

What’s the book about?

Robyn loves her friends, enjoys her youth group, and looks forward to meeting cute Caleb Montague. But when a caustic news reporter challenges her school’s prayer team, Robyn must choose: defend their right to meet on campus and pray for whomever they wish or back down at the principal’s request.

Now she must learn what God wants her to do. And she had better learn fast, because there’s a supernatural enemy in town whose sole mission is to stop her—no matter the cost.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT DRIVEN
Driven is a new take on the age old battle of good versus evil. Gripping from the first page, this is one book you won’t want to put down.

–Leanna Kay, co-creator of www.samiesisters.com – a place for Christian girls to grow in faith.

Driven is a breathtaking book of tension, intrigue, and heartwarming emotion. From the moment I began to read until the very last word, I couldn’t put it aside. It held me enthralled!

–Lindsay Below, author of Head Over Hand-Bought Heels

Oily creatures of the night are seeking to destroy a group of teens at Brookfield Central High School. Their primary target? A resilient teenage girl who refuses to question her calling. But how much guilt, how much pain, and how much accusation can one human take? Laced with other-worldly plot threads akin to Frank Peretti’s This Present Darkness, Shellie Neumeier’s debut novel inspires followers of Christ to stand strong in God’s calling regardless of tragic circumstances. Along the way she explores tragedy in friendships and the beauty of redemption.
–Caleb Jennings Breakey, Refining Teen Writers into Rockstars www.CalebBreakey.com

In the tradition of This Present Darkness and The Screwtape Letters, Driven pulls back the veil between worlds and reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against Satan and his minions. But the journey of Robyn and her friends against both physical and spiritual enemies also illustrates the more exciting truth: that ultimate victory rests with our God.

–Anne Mateer, author of Wings of Dream, September 2011.

14. Meet Robyn Stanley

In one week my debut novel, DRIVEN, releases in paperback. In honor of its birthday I’d like to introduce the main character of the story. Her name is Robyn Stanley and she’s like most seventeen year-old girls I know. She hales from Brookfield, WI where she is finishing her junior year in high school and she spends most of her time hanging out with her youth group friends.

Hey Robyn.

Hi. Thanks for the interview.

Yeah, sure. No problem. So tell us what it’s like being the main character in a novel.

Well, it’s pretty cool, I guess. I get to do things most girls don’t, like ice sailing, TV interviewing, and dueling demons. And the hero of the story is pretty cool, too. It’s fun playing opposite him.

Would that be Caleb or Taylor?

Actually, I can’t say. That’s part of the suspense. You don’t really know who the hero is until the very end. You’ll just have to read it to find out.

Gottcha. Was there ever a moment when you wished you weren’t the main character?

Yah. Like when I got cornered into a TV interview with a waspish news reporter. Or when I had to confront my principal. Who wants to do that? I would have shrugged that off on Em, but she didn’t want to do it either.

Em?

Yeah, she’s my best friend, ever. The kind that let’s you do all the talking and has your back when you do something stupid. I love her. But you gotta hide the M&Ms when she comes over. She eats them all.

I hear your story has a tragic twist to it.

It does. All because of a demon who can’t leave me alone. He’s bent on destroying me and he’ll use every one and every thing to do it, too. Kinda makes it hard to be my friend…or my family.

Any advice for your readers?

Sure. Don’t give up. Ever. Sometimes God’s purpose for you is in the tough stuff. You just have to ride it through to find out. Hey, I’ve gotta go…homework and all. I’ll see you inside the covers of DRIVEN.

Thanks Robyn. If you’d like to ask Robyn a question feel free to add it to the comment section below.

**Robyn is a fictitious character and this interview was conducted in jest because I simply had too much time on my hands. Thanks for reading…

18. Awaiting the Release

Morning.

I couldn’t have asked for a better day for the Christmas e-release of my debut novel, DRIVEN. Not sure what the weather is like where you live, but here we have soft falling snow (not enough to make driving nutty or force the shovels out of storage–just pretty to watch as it falls). All in all I’m in a very Christmasy mood which I would like to share with you.

Soon, Amazon should be posting the Kindle version of DRIVEN for all to purchase (I’ll post the link as soon as it’s live). In the meantime, I would like to invite you all to a different kind of Christmas party–A virtual book launch party. Here’s the skinny:

When: Thursday, December 2, 2010 (yup, tomorrow) from 7 – 8pm (CST)

Where: DRIVEN‘s Facebook Fan Page (click here and you’ll be taken right to it). You’ll need to “like” the page to participate in the give-a-ways and the discussions.

Why: There will be gifts given away every ten minutes, time to ask the author about the publishing journey and the cast of characters (among other things), and did I mention gifts? (Oh yeah, it’s Christmas–I love Christmas)

What: Here’s the gift list–Two copies of Sandi Rog’s THE MASTER’S WALL, A copy of UNLOCKED by Karen Kingsbury, Brandilyn Collins RAYNE TOUR Trilogy (yup all three), one of the first paperback copies of DRIVEN, and a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

Hope to see you there!

No Calorie e-Cookies.

19. A Special Offer for Holiday Gifters

Many of you have heard about Amazon’s latest ebook offer. You can now gift an ebook to anyone who has an email address. And they do NOT have to own a kindle to read the book. Amazon has offered a variety of FREE reading apps for use with their ebooks. What a great and inexpensive way to gift books! Here’s the thing. I love to gift wrap a little something and set it under the tree for my family and friends even if it’s a gift card. But, how do you wrap an ebook?

Well, you can’t really, but here’s a fun work-a-round. If you purchase an ebook of DRIVEN, beginning tomorrow, or pre-order the paperback before December 18, 2010, I’ll send you (or the person you are giving the book to) a Christmas card from the DRIVEN gang. Just click on the Christmas Card page and fill out the information. Now, you’ll have something to put under that tree.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Tomorrow I’ll announce the date of the DRIVEN virtual launch party and the awesome goodies we’ll share with you. By the way, what are your favorite give-a-ways? (To give or receive)

20. DRIVEN Releases!

This morning, perched on the eve of a surprise early release of my first novel, I found an interesting blog post hanging out in my reader. It began with a Bible verse–Proverbs 27:2, to be exact.

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.”-Proverbs 27:2

With that nugget of God’s wisdom, I stand on the edge of self-promotion. I don’t particularly care for praising my own work–not that I haven’t done it. It just leaves a funny taste in my mouth, know what I mean? But alas it is a necessary part of the world I’m now a part of. I think there’s a fine line between promoting in a professional manner and dissolving into an irritating whine. I’m going to try my best to ride that line with the utmost of care, but please forgive me if I falter. I’m still new at this.

In the meantime, I would like to invite you to join my journey. Whoo-hoo! Here we go. . .

DRIVEN releases its Kindle version in time for the Holiday Season. Beginning December 1 (Yup, that’s the day after tomorrow), you can join the fun by downloading it to your ereader, kindle, ipod, computer or phone. Or you can pre-order it on paperback through Barnes and Noble (paperbacks are scheduled to print March 1, 2011).

Tomorrow I’ll announce a special gift offer for those gift-givers out there. And don’t forget to come back Wednesday for a virtual launch party and all those pretty blue links. But for now. . .

Thank You!

BTW Please don’t forget about Operation Abundance. It’s still going strong with two more weeks to go. Will you join us, please?
