1. Living Oasis owner puts chain up for sale

The owner of Living Oasis is in talks with a “third party” to buy the chain after he closed two of his four remaining shops.

Ray George, chairman of the Nationwide Christian Trust (NCT), which bought 19 former Wesley Owen bookshops in January 2010, said the stores were losing him too much money and he did not see a future in Christian bookselling in the current climate.

2. Living Oasis closes another branch

Christian retailer Living Oasis has closed another store, with it slashing its number of branches from 19 to four in just over four months.

The Cheltenham, Gloucestershire branch was closed on Friday with two days’ notice given to its four staff. The closure follows the demise of the Chester, Weston-Super-Mare, Worthing and Nottingham branches, which were all announced within a month.

3. Living Oasis Edinburgh to close

An Edinburgh branch of Christian bookseller Living Oasis will close in June because of “ongoing losses” and no sign that trade will “substantially increase” in the shop.

A formal consultation process had begun with staff after the Nationwide Christian Trust, which runs the Living Oasis network, announced it would close the shop on 4th June 2011. Plans to combine the former Wesley Owen bookshop with a cafe and “meeting place” fell through after landlords objected to the plans.
