The Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) is now accepting entries for the 2017 PBBY-Salanga Prize. The contest is co-sponsored by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Library of the Philippines (NLP). The winner shall receive twenty-five thousand (25,000) pesos and a medal. Prizes will be awarded in an appropriate ceremony to be held during the celebration of National Children’s Book Day in July 2017. Contest Rules
- The contest is open to all Filipino citizens except those who are related to any PBBY member up to the third degree of consanguinity.
- Stories should be intended for children aged 6 to 12 years old. The plot and the sequence must be capable of sustaining an illustrated book of 28 to 32 pages.
- Entries may be in Filipino or English.
- Entries must be in hard copy, double-spaced, on short bond paper. Maximum length is five (5) pages.
- A contestant may send in more than one (1) entry.
- Each entry must be signed by a pen name only. Five (5) copies of each entry should be placed in an envelope, on the face of which only the pen name of the contestant should appear.
- Together with each entry, contestants must submit a second envelope, on the face of which the pen name shall appear. The second envelope must contain the contestant’s full name, address, contact numbers, a short literary background, and a notarized certification from the author, vouching for the originality of the entry and for the freedom of the organizers from any liability arising from the infringement of copyright in case of publication, and affirming that the entry or any variant thereof has (a) never been published nor (b) won any other contest i.e. that it has never won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or honorable mention in any other contest or otherwise been awarded a medal, a citation, or included in a publicized list of meritorious entries to a literary contest.
- All entries must be sent through snail mail to the PBBY Secretariat, c/o Adarna House, Inc., Scout Torillo cor. Scout Fernandez Sts., Barangay Sacred Heart, Quezon City.
- All entries must be received by the PBBY Secretariat no later than 5:00 p.m., December 2, 2016.
- Winners will be announced no later than February 3, 2017. Non-winning entries will be disposed of by the PBBY Secretariat.
Grand prize and honorable mention winners shall be subject to a bidding process to be facilitated by the PBBY, to determine which publisher/s will publish their winning stories.

Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK), the Philippines’ first and only organization of illustrators for children, marks its 25th year with its anniversary exhibit, “Tinker Tales,” slated on Sept. 12 - Oct. 16 at the Third Floor Exhibition Halls, Ayala Museum, Makati Avenue cor De La Rosa St., Greenbelt Park, Makati City.
Founded in June 1991, Ang INK was the offshoot of a children's book illustration workshop sponsored by the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) and the Goethe-Institiute Manila and conducted by visiting German book illustrator Reinhard Michl. The organization was born out of the workshop participants’ belief that a collective effort among colleagues is vital to the professionalization and development of the industry.
Since its inception, Ang INK has gone on to mount 46 group exhibits and publish several books as a group: “INKuwento” (1999), “Kuwentong Kalikasan, Katha ng Kabataan” (1999), “Water in the Ring of Fire” (1999), “Hale Hale Hoy” (2006), “Mga Tambay sa Tabi-Tabi” (2009), and “Ang INKredible Coloring Book” (2016). It has also received recognitions, including the Pearl Anniversary Reading Advocacy Award (2000), a Philippine Board on Books for Young People citation (2001); and a Museo Pambata Award of Recognition (2014); while individual members have reaped national and international awards. Today, Ang INK members continue to create art not just for children’s books, but also for comics, magazines, newspapers, workbooks, websites, toys, games, animation, greeting cards, posters, murals, postcards, and TV commercials.
In 2016, Ang INK renews its commitment towards encouraging the creation and appreciation of illustrations for children with “Tinker Tales,” a showcase of over 200 works by Ang INK artists, inspired by stories gathered from a variety of institutions: The Raya School, San Vicente Elementary School, AHA Learning Center, Quality Life Discoveries, and ATD Fourth World-Philippines.
In “Tinker Tales,” Ang INK continues the cycle of children inspiring art which inspires children. Prompted by story stones previously created by Ang INK at the Ayala Museum, children of different backgrounds came up with different stories, which are in turn illustrated in the works featured in the exhibit. The second part of the exhibit is a new set of characters, objects, and settings that can be used for fresh stories, for the next 25 years and beyond.
Aside from the exhibit, Ang INK will also be hosting its annual INKFest (free admission with museum entrance) on Oct. 1, 10 am to 6 pm at the Ayala Museum G/F lobby, showcasing live art, merchandise tables, art activity booths, and more.
Other activities in line with the month-long anniversary celebration are the following: Sept. 24, G/F Lobby, book launch of Adarna House’s Kapitbahay Kubo and Kara at Play illustrated by Jamie Bauza & Pergy Acuña (10 am – 12 nn, free admission); Illustration Masterclass: Secret Techniques for Award-Winning Book Illustrations facilitated by Sergio Bumatay III and Rommel Joson (2 - 5 pm, P1,500 registration fee); and Oct. 8, Kiddie Arts & Crafts Party (10 am - 12 nn, G/F Lobby, free admission with museum entrance), and Sketch Afternoon, a drawing session with your favorite INKies (2 - 5 pm, 3/F Lobby, P650).
"Tinker Tales" is mounted in partnership with Ayala Museum, in cooperation with Prestige Paper Products, Fedrigoni, Canvas.ph, Sakura, Adarna House, Oishi, Wavelink, Lampara Books, Summit Books, Davies Paint, and OMF Literature.

You are all invited to an exhibit featuring the winning works from the past 31 years of the
PBBY-Alcala Illustrators' Prize. The exhibit will be at Corredor Gallery, College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines Diliman and will open 3 p.m. on August 18.
The Philippines' 3rd National Children's Book Awards included a Kids' Choice Award! Five judges, ages 11-13, read picture books published in 2012 and 2013 and picked their top ten favorites. I. together with the other judges chose 10 books that will be the top 10 finalists but i will only share our reasons why we chose "Sandwich to the Moon" & "Si Berting ang Batang Uling" as part of the Top 10 finalists because we think that younger readers will easily understand and relate to these books' content and also we think that the writers, as well as illustrators along with the publishing companies did a job well-done in writing, illustrating, and publishing the books in an entertaining, creative and inspirational way. I would like to congratulate sir Jaime Bauza, writer & illustrator of "Sandwich to the Moon" and L G & M Corporation. And congratulation also to sir Christopher Rosales as the writer, Aldy Aguirre as the illustrator of the book entitled "Si Berting ang Batang Uling" and Adarna House Inc. for publishing the book. One of the 10 finalists for the Kids' Choice Award is a book entitled "Pages." It is written by Javier T. Delfin with illustrations by Gabi Dimaranan and published by The Bookmark, Inc. This book was chosen because of it's unique story. The very colourful drawings and pictures were also really cool. And the words were really simple and easy to understand.

A pleasant afternoon to everyone. First of all I would like to say thank you to everyone as a sign of my gratitude for this once in a lifetime privilege that you had given me. Being a part of this event was an extreme honor for a student like me. I hope that this event will be successful and I also hope that we judges, did our job well enough.
One of the two books that I had chosen was the “Pintong Maraming Silid”. One of the reasons why I had chosen this book was because of its simplicity. I loved the story line and how the story was stated. I also liked the illustrations and most of all, I loved the story because I easily understood it.
The other book that I had chosen was entitled “The Little Girl in a Box”. One of the reasons why I had chosen this book was because of its really good storyl ine. I loved how the story flows. It was precisely stated and it was very simple yet it was still good. I really, really enjoyed it.

Dahil dito, pinagtatawanan siya at tinatawag na Beki. Pero hindi ni Adel pinapansin ang mga tukso sa kaniya. Para sa kaniya, ang kulay pink ay simbolo ng katapangan.

PBBY-Alcala Prize was won by freelance artist Aaron Paul Asis. Asis based his winning entry on one of the 2014
PBBY-Salanga honorable mention awardees,
“Gaano Ba Kalayo Patungong Paaralan?” by Genaro Gojo Cruz.
According to this year’s judges, Asis’ illustrations “depict the intimacy between two brothers, but their visual closeness does not prevent the viewer from imagining the expanse of the outside world and feeling the anticipation for tomorrow’s journey to school.”

The Philippine Boardon Books for Young People (PBBY) formally launches the KABANATA Young Adult Writer’s Workshop with a call for fellowship applications. Slated to begin in October 2014 in Quezon City, KABANATA aims to provide a venue and support system to writers who share in PBBY’s commitment to the promotion of a culture of reading among Filipino youth by providing this growing population with books that recognize their culture, aspirations, and sense of maturity.
For a period of at least six months, fellows accepted to KABANATA will meet monthly for learning sessions with industry experts, and progress discussions with their co-fellows. Upon novel completion, PBBY will help fellows with publication by inviting publishers to bid on the finished works. With this, KABANATA hopes to produce chapter books and young adult novels that will set the bar for similar endeavors to aspire to, and be the growth spurt of what will hopefully become a thriving, diverse, and quality Filipino literature inventory for kids and teens.
Applicants are asked to submit, among other requirements, a novel-in-progress represented by three chapters and a chapter outline. Novels-in-progress should be aimed towards children within the age of 9 to 16. Riddle enthusiasts and lovers of Lola Basyang stories are in for a double treat when Tahanan Books launches its companion volumes to two popular Filipino classics on Tuesday, February 19, 5 - 7 p.m., at Figaro Café, Greenbelt 3, Makati City. The event is open to the public.

Press Release: The Ken Spillman and NBDCS AFCC Subsidy
Once a year, participants come to the Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC) in Singapore to meet and mingle with writers, illustrators, publishers, editors, and producers of excellent children’s content.
To assist Filipino children's book creators to access regional opportunities, Australian children’s author Ken Spillman has made available a grant of ten thousand pesos (P10,000.00) to help defray the expenses of attending the AFCC held annually in Singapore.
To qualify, applicants must have published at least one full-length work for children or young adults. Evidence of the published work may take the form of a PDF file attached to the application or a link to the site where the work is sold.
Applicants are also asked to submit a resumé and a maximum of 500 words explaining how attendance at the AFCC might be expected to contribute to the applicant’s development and profile as a writer. A statement on why the applicant needs the grant may also be considered but is not a requirement. A commitment to attend the AFCC is also expected by showing proof that the applicant will pay or look for other resources to fund other expected expenses in the attendance of the AFCC.
The National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) will also give the chosen recipient a fifty percent (50%) discount on the AFCC registration fee. A special code will be emailed to the chosen applicant which may be used to register online.
With the above-stated requirements, applications may be emailed to [email protected]. The deadline for submission of applications is on March 15, 2013 for attendance to this year’s AFCC which will be held on May 28-29, 2013. All submissions will be treated confidentially.
The Philippine Board on Books for Young People declared Michael Jude C. Tumamac as the Grand Prize winner of the 2013 PBBY-Salanga Prize. Tumamac’s winning story, “Ngumiti si Andoy,” is a story inspired by the life of Andres Bonifacio. Tumamac is a teacher and a proud member of Kuwentista ng mga Tskiting (KUTING) and Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA).
Honorable mentions went to Mark Anthony Angeles for his story “Si Andoy, Batang Tondo” and April Jade Biglaen for her story “Ang Supremo at ang Kuweba.”

Mechanics:
1. HEIGHTS’ KUWENTONG PAMBATA call for entries is open to students, faculty, and alumni of the Ateneo de Manila University except for the panelists and Editorial Board of Heights.
2. The entry of not more than 500 words, either in English or in Filipino, may deal with any subject but it must be appropriate for the grade-school reading level of children ages 7-12.
3. The entry must be in either Rich Text Format (.rtf) or in a Microsoft Word Document (.doc), double-spaced on 8.5” x 11” bond paper, with a one-inch margin on all sides. The font to be used may be Arial size 11, Times New Roman size 12, or Calibri size 12.
4. A separate document must include the following: the author’s name, pseudonym, a photo (preferably 1×1 or 2×2), a write-up about the author in 2-5 sentences, and the story’s synopsis not exceeding 100 words.
5. The English entries must be attached to an e-mail sent to [email protected] with the subject head KUWENTONG PAMBATA on or before September 30, 2012.
6. The Filipino entries must be attached to an e-mail sent to [email protected] with the subject head KUWENTONG PAMBATA on or before September 30, 2012.
7. Any lack of required information means failure of submission and the work will not be deliberated.
8. One (1) entry for both English and Filipino will be selected as finalists.
9. Between the two chosen finalists, only one (1) winning entry will be chosen for publication as the KUWENTONG PAMBATA 2012. The said entry will be published as a children’s book, with illustrations and layout by the Art and Design staff of Heights.

Aspiring writers still have time to finalize and submit their entries to the 62nd Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (Palanca Awards).
The Palanca Awards, the Philippines' most prestigious and longest running literary competition, is accepting submissions until 12:00 m.n. of April 30, in the following regular categories:
English Division – Short Story, Short Story for Children, Essay, Poetry, Poetry for Children, One-act Play, and Full-length Play;
Filipino Division – Maikling Kuwento, Maikling Kuwentong Pambata, Sanaysay, Tula, Tulang Pambata, Dulang May Isang Yugto, Dulang Ganap ang Haba, and Dulang Pampelikula;
Regional Languages Division – Short Story-Cebuano, Short Story-Hiligaynon and Short Story-Iluko.
Young writers below 18 years old are encouraged to submit essays in the Kabataan Division. This year's theme for the Kabataan Essay is “In the advent of e-books, do I still consider printed books to be an important part of education?” The theme for the Kabataan Sanaysay is “Sa paglaganap ng e-books, maituturing ko pa bang mahalagang bahagi ng edukasyon ang mga nakalimbag na aklat?”

YA author, journalist, cultural promoter, translator, and language and intercultural communication teacher Tanya Tynjälä (SCBWI Peru/Finland) will conduct a workshop on writing stories for children and young adults.
The lectures and exercises will be based on the work of Soviet formalist scholar Vladimir Propp who analyzed the basic plot components of Russian folk tales to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements.
This workshop is open to anyone age 18 and above who is a published or aspiring writer, or who teaches or wants to teach creative writing for children and young adults.

The International Committee of the Children’s Literature Association is planning a special country focus panel on the Philippines, to be presented at the 39th Children’s Literature Association Conference, to be held at Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts, USA from June 14 to 16, 2012. The committee invites paper proposals that focus on any aspect of Philippine children’s literature. Papers may focus on the origins of and/or developments in Philippine children’s texts; issues of regionalism and nationalism; Philippine folklore as children’s texts; Philippine children’s literature in the diaspora; or the state of children’s literature studies in the Philippines. Preference will be given to proposals with the potential to inspire American and international scholars to develop active interest in Philippine children’s literature and to integrate it into their own research.
The authors of two papers selected for the panel to accompany a presentation by a Philippine Distinguished Scholar (invited by the committee) will be awarded a $500 travel grant each. Up to four other proposals may be selected as well, pending the approval of the additional panel by the conference paper selection committee. The papers must be presented in English and must not exceed the twenty-minute reading time. The committee strongly encourages ChLA members and other scholars with an interest in Philippine children’s literature to submit paper proposals for the session.
