3. Why I Started This Blog: The Danger of A Single Story

Shweta Ganesh Kumar shared with me this TED Talk from novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie about how "a single story" about another person or country can cause critical misunderstanding, and I felt that the talk really reflected why I started this blog. Please watch it below, if you haven't already:

I sometimes teach creative writing to children and teens and have been very shocked to see that the first impulse of my students - all Filipinos or Chinese Filipinos ages 11-15 - is to write stories featuring characters with blond hair and blue eyes. It seems that, like the seven-year-old Adichie, my students have "a single story" about what literature is and do not think that people like them can exist in literature. (Needless to say, I am now trying to expose my students to more Filipino literature and literature from other Asian countries.)

I blog because our students, nieces and nephews, children, grandchildren, and godchildren NEED AND DESERVE more than "a single story" about Asia and more than "a single story" about each Asian country. And I am really grateful that you are here reading this blog, because that means you reject "the single story" about Asia and "the single story" about each Asian country.

5. Asia in the Heart, World on the Mind is one year old.

In early 2005, I started blogging about children's and YA books at Into the Wardrobe. At first I was blogging mostly about fantasy books from the U.S. and the U.K. Into the Wardrobe then grew into a more general children's and YA book blog. It is also a personal blog where I post about my family and work and friends.

I started wondering if there were blogs with a special focus on Asian children's and YA books, and I started featuring Asian authors and books with Asian content at Into the Wardrobe. I found blog posts on Asian children's and YA books, but not sites wholly devoted to them. And I felt that what I was doing at Into the Wardrobe was not enough.

So I decided to start a second blog. I absolutely love children's and YA books set in Asia, children's and YA books with Asian characters, children's and YA books with characters of Asian descent, Asian children's and YA book authors and illustrators, and children's and YA book authors and illustrators of Asian descent. Unfortunately, Asian children's and YA books do not get enough attention in traditional or new media. But they definitely DESERVE a lot of attention. I started Asia in the Heart, World on the Mind to celebrate what I loved and to hopefully help make them more visible in the mainstream.

On November 26, 2009, I started cross-posting related Into the Wardrobe blog posts to Asia in the Heart, World on the Mind. On November 29 and 30, I posted new interviews with Filipino writers: Perpilili Vivienne Tiongson and Candy Gourlay. Wow, I can't believe that was a year ago!

What has happened over the past year? I've learned a lot about Asian children's and YA books. I have read great books. I have gotten to know beautiful and wonderful people. And I love Asian children's and YA books even more now. The more I discover about them, the more I love them. (In fact, I dream of visiting each Asian country - starting with India, Iran, China, Malaysia, and South Korea - just to study its children's and YA books.)

I still feel like what I am doing is not enough. So Asia in the Heart, World on the Mind will have many more anniversaries. I hope that all of you, plus new visitors, will be there to celebrate them with me. :o) Thank you so much for your support. Thank you so much for reading Asia in the Heart, World on the Mind!

6. By the way . . .

If I haven't updated this blog, it probably means that I have updated my more general kidlit blog Into the Wardrobe, or contributed something to the group book blog Color Online. :o)

7. In other news . . .

Soon I'll be wrapping up my series of interviews with the winners of the first Philippine National Children's Books Awards and will be reviewing books again. I've bought or received some beautiful, impressive books from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and India, and I'm excited to discuss them here. I've also got some really great books from the U.S. with Asian and/or Asian American content.

What have you been reading lately? Any book recommendations for Asia in the Heart, World on the Mind? :o)

And oh! Have you seen The New York Times' list of Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2010? Shadow (Chronicle Books) is on the list - it's the work of Korean illustrator Suzy Lee. (Is Suzy Lee still living in Singapore?) Big Red Lollipop (Viking), written by Pakistani Canadian author Rukhsana Khan and illustrated by Sophie Blackall, is also on the list. Woot woot!!

Over the weekend I met up with some fellow Filipino book bloggers. It was so nice to finally meet them and talk about bookish things in person! Below are a couple pictures from our time together:

There are more pictures here, here, here, and here. :o)

14. A Gift for My Readers

'Tis the season for giving and I would like to thank readers of Into the Wardrobe. I am giving away a $20 Amazon gift card!* (I initially wanted to give away a book, but I am so lame I couldn't decide which book to give away. This way the winner can choose which book to get!)

To enter this giveaway, all you have to do is answer these questions in the comments section below:

1. What children's or young adult book would you get if you won the gift card?

2. Why do you want that book?

3. Would the book be for yourself or a gift for someone?

Your answers to all three questions will count as one entry. Only one entry per person is allowed. This giveaway is open to all readers of Into the Wardrobe, no matter where you are in the world.

The winner of the gift card will be randomly selected next Sunday evening, Dec. 14. I will post the name of the winner and his/her entry by next Monday morning, Dec. 15. This is all happening in Philippine time, of course.

Good luck! And don't be shy. I look forward to reading all the entries. Thank you so much for reading my blog. :o)

*If the winner turns out to be someone here in the Philippines, he/she may opt instead for a PHP1,000 gift card for any of the major bookstores in the Philippines.

15. Wow, this time I get interviewed!

Fran Slayton is a children's book author whose debut middle grade novel When the Whistle Blows comes out June 2009. At her blog, Fran is posting a series of interviews with kidlit bloggers on how they determine which books to review and which authors to interview. The series is dedicated to all debut children's and young adult literature authors in 2009.

The first interview she has up is with me! Thank you so much for hosting me, Fran. It was fun being interviewed about kidlit blogging. :D
