You’ve researched your character extensively, tailored her to your audience, sketched hundreds of versions, and now you lean back content as you gaze at your final character model sheet. But now what? Whether you want to use her in an animated film, television show, video game, web comic, or children’s book, you’re going to have to make her perform. How a character looks and is costumed starts to tell her story, but her body language reveals even more. Character Mentor shows you how to pose your character, create emotion through facial expressions, and stage your character to create drama. Author Tom Bancroft addresses each topic with clear, concise prose, and then shows you what he really means through commenting on and redrawing artwork from a variety of student “apprentices.” His assignments allow you to join in and bring your drawing to the next level with concrete techniques, as well as more theoretical analysis. Character Mentor is an apprenticeship in a book.
Professional artists from a variety of media offer their experience through additional commentary. These include Marcus Hamilton (Dennis the Menace), Terry Dodson (X-Men), Bobby Rubio (Pixar), Sean “Cheeks” Galloway (Spiderman animated), and more. With a foreword by comicbook artist Adam Hughes, who has produced work for DC, Marvel Comics, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros. Pictures, and other companies.
Character designer Stephen Silver is mad as hell, and he’s not going to take it anymore. Silver, who is the designer of shows like Kim Possible and Danny Phantom, posted an impassioned YouTube video a few days ago urging young artists not to give their work away for free.
Silver’s message is simple but priceless: if you don’t respect your own creative skills, others won’t either. This has always been a difficult idea for creative people to grasp—myself included—because we enjoy what we do for a living. Most young artists don’t enter the animation field because they want to become rich; they do it because they love the art form. But not everyone shares that idealism. Businesspeople and corporations are in it purely for the money, and they will gladly not pay you what you’re worth if it enhances their bottom line.
Almost every creative person eventually comes around to the concept that Silver is advocating in his video. The sooner you do it in your career, the better off you will be.
Stephen Silver offers us this glimpse at his latest efforts for the Schoolism online art classes. The Masters Series: In the Studio With… is an ongoing documentary/interview series conducted by Stephen in the home studios of some cartooning greats. The first episode features iconic MAD Magazine caricaturist and parody artist Mort Drucker.
Stephen is as passionate about teaching others to love drawing as he is about drawing itself, so this is sure to be a great collection.
This short clips only whets my appetite for the full video, which will set you back $40.
Bobby Chiu of Schoolism online art classes has started doing a regular series of streaming video evenings on Ustream called, obviously, CHIU-Stream. He talks and answers questions while drawing a topic chosen by viewers at the beginning of the show.
He also interviews famous atists on occasion. Here’s a recent interview Bobby did with character designer Stephen Silver:
The next artist interview will be with the great Peter de Sève tomorrow night, live, Wednesday Oct 7 at 11:30pm EST. He’ll be picking a topic to sketch or paint and then participants sketch that topic for the duration of the interview. Peter will then select a winner and that winner will get a Peter de Sève original drawing mailed to him/her. Check it all out on CHIU-Stream.
I would also just like to say that Stephen Silver also does his own live show every week on U-Stream. He calls it ArtCast and it airs every Tuesday night. This internet thing sure is pretty cool…
