1. Candy Cane Lunch Box

Exodus 20:8
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Over Thanksgiving break my family and I took a short trip to Orlando and one of my very favorite things to do there is to visit as many of the different Disney hotels as possible to see them all decked out for Christmas. I took a bunch of photos that I'll (hopefully) share with you soon!

Anyhow, I feel as though I'm still recovering from Thanksgiving break and getting back into the swing of things while in the midst of this crazy holiday season. I say this because this week, I just taught my kids about the 4th Commandment as I drove to our after school activities. Honestly, sometimes I think it works best this way because there's not much for them to do in the car but listen to me, no distractions-yes!

For this Christmas season, I've chosen a candy cane as our theme. When flipped upside down the candy cane forms a "J" for Jesus.  The 4th commandment is about remembering the Sabbath day by resting and making sure to honor God on that day as well. So, a wonderful way to honor God is by worshiping his son, Jesus and that's how I've tied this all together.

I recently bought for my kids the book,"Legend of the Candy Cane," which I'm sure many of you are familiar with. I love how it describes the legend for the meaning of the colors of the candy cane.

Red= Christ's blood that was shed for us
White= We are washed white as snow in purity through redemption

I've put together a video tutorial on how to make this candy cane lunchbox. You can click HERE to see it or watch it below:

It was like a candy cane workshop on my table!

Blessings,
Jenni

2. Thanksgiving Turkey Lunch Tutorial

Exodus 20:7
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain

We are now working on the 3rd Commandment in pancakes and thankfulness is our theme. Since Thanksgiving is about being thankful, I taught my kids that we are to use our mouths to give God thanks and praise instead of misusing his name.

I was trying for an orange lunch theme with the orange jello and orange fruit (I LOVE themes....I can stay awake at night thinking about themes, so fun!).

This time I was able to surprise my kids with the turkeys in their lunches. Usually they find out and see me working on it, but not this time! Yeah!

You can make these pancakes ahead, wrap them, freeze them in a freezer bag and then put them in your kid's lunches the next day.  They will thaw by lunchtime.

Check out the video HERE, or watch it below:

I made enough batter for my kids to make their own turkeys after school.  I was able to freeze their lunch turkeys before they got home so they didn't know about them!

My daughter's turkey was sooooo cute! I love seeing what my kids come up with in art pancakes.

Blessings,
Jenni

3. A Merry Christmas Manger Pancake

Luke 2:11
For unto you is born this day in the
city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

I'm sharing with you today a tutorial that I began writing last Christmas, but it's been waiting all year for me to finish up...so here it is now, finished and ready for you to make!

You could cook up the pancakes on Christmas Day or ahead of time and freeze them or you could make them for a fun snack (like I typically do). Any way you choose, I hope you have fun!

Supplies
-Griddle or large skillet
-Pam Cooking Spray
-Large mixing bowl
-Electric mixer
-Four Condiment Squirt Bottles
-Yellow, Brown, Green Food Coloring
-Paper Towels
-Spatula
-Spoon for mixing
-4 clear drinking cups
-Candy (mini chocolate chips, mini M&Ms)

Recipe
2 Cups + 2-4 Tbsp Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix (the just add water mix)
1 Tbsp Sugar
1 ½ Cups Water
½ tsp Vanilla Extract

  Directions
In a large bowl, stir the pancake mix and sugar together with a spoon. Add the water and vanilla extract and stir until moistened. Take your electric mixer and beat the batter until it's well blended. If you have too many lumps, they will clog up your squirt bottle. At this point, you may need to add a little more pancake mix (one Tablespoon at a time) depending on your batter's consistency. You want the batter thick enough to “draw” with but not too much where it wont squeeze out of the squirt bottle. Divide your batter into 4 clear drinking cups. Color your batter yellow, brown, and green using your food colorings (use the graphic above to get an idea of how much batter each color will need).  The 4th cup doesn't have any color. Carefully add each cup of batter into separate squirt bottles.

Spray your griddle with cooking spray but do not turn it on yet. Take your brown batter and draw the main part of the manger.

Now draw the legs for the manger.

Switch to your green batter and draw a half circle and a shape that looks almost like a triangle to represent the baby blanket.

Grab your white batter and draw the round head and a dot for a nose.

Take your yellow batter and draw straw. It's best to draw the straw above the manger so that you can visually "measure" the width of the straw based off the size of the manger.

Now it's finally time to turn on your griddle to 200 degrees. Let the outlines cook for a minute or two and then take your brown batter and fill in the manger.

Fill in the blanket with the green batter.

Fill in straw with the yellow batter.

Finally, fill in the head with the white batter.  Now wait until the batter starts to loose it's shine and bubbles before flipping it.

Decorate your pancake with mini chocolate chips and mini M&Ms.

Merry Christmas!

5. A Lunchbox Santa

Winter has officially come today because we woke up to it snowing! So exciting! Driving my son to school was seriously scary though because they hadn't plowed the roads much and it was definitely slick but...it was a pretty drive.

On a different note, I made extra Santa pancakes the day that I created my muffin tin (and froze them) so that I could pack them in my kids lunch boxes for a fun surprise.
I snapped a quick photo of my daughter's lunch before I packed it for her: a homemade recipe of a Santa pancake, grapes and Kiwi. My son got the same thing.

And as promised, I finished up my Santa tutorial and it's available in my shop now. So fun!

The tutorial makes mini Santa's too!

I love how my son used a mini M&M for Santa's eye! So funny!

Also, thank you Steph for featuring my pancake tutorial! Check it out HERE.

Blessings,
Jenni

6. July 4th Pinwheel PancakeTutorial!

July 4th is just around the corner and these sparkly pinwheel pancakes are a super fun way to celebrate the day! I just listed this tutorial in my SHOP. Time for some holiday fun!
I just decorated for July 4th this week around our house (after I finally took down the Easter decor! LOL!).
It took me such a long time to take down first the Christmas decor, then the Easter decor, so I wonder how long my patriotic decor will stay up? Maybe until Thanksgiving! Hee! Hee!

I just want to take a moment to thank http://niftythriftythings.blogspot.com/ for the feature this week! A Big thank you!!
On the fourth, our local college has a nice fireworks display that we can see from our driveway and our church hosts the absolute best fireworks I've ever seen about a week before July 4th. Homemade ice cream has been a family tradition on the 4th since I've been a kid and now my kids and I make it. Yum!

How do you usually celebrate the 4th of July?

Blessings,
Jenni
