One of the first pancakes my daughter and I made together-Jonah and the Whale |
I'm often asked (on my
Youtube channel) why I force religion on my children...and why I don't just let them discover what they believe on their own??
I think this a great question really worth devoting some time to in answering. My husband and I train our children but we also encourage them to read the Bible and find out what it says so that they see the truth for themselves. So, back to the original question, "Why do I force religion on my children?"
-The Bible says to train your childrenThis is obviously going to take effort but it's worth it! Also, please know that I'm not perfect and sometimes I'm better at teaching my kids than other times. Life happens and routines change. Summer threw us off a bit but I'm working to get things back on track. Let me share with you a few ways that my husband and I train our children in God's word and I hope it inspires you with some ideas of your own:
- Take our kids to church
- Read the Bible to them
- Bible lessons with art pancakes
- Bible lessons with art projects (crafts)
- Verse of the Day. I have my oldest child read the "verse of the day" from my Bible App on the drive to school. This has led to some awesome Bible discussion on our drive!
- Pray together. My kids take turns praying for our day on the drive to school, at meals, and also before bed.
- Have your children memorize scripture. I like to print out whatever verse I'm teaching in art pancakes and put it on the fridge.
- Be an example yourself! Read your Bible, pray, go to church...put God first! Your children will notice.
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
-It will make them wise for salvationIt's my heart's desire that my children love the Lord and find salvation through Christ. I want to be with them in heaven someday!
2 Timothy 3:15
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures,
which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Teach children what sin isYou can't rely on the world to train your children on what is sin. The world embraces sin, makes excuses for it and labels it in all sorts of ways so that it appears ok. Sin is not ok. It's important to teach your children about sin, train them on the 10 commandments and to encourage them to walk daily with Christ. Here's a
playlist of pancake art videos on teaching the 10 Commandments. Check it out!
Deuteronomy 11:18-21
Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
-Obedience to God=BlessingsAs a mother, I want to see my children blessed and the Bible is clear that following Christ will bring blessings. That's not to say that you'll be free from hardships, but the Lord is faithful and hears the prayers of those that love him. I've seen him work wonders in my life when I trust in him instead of myself.
Deuteronomy 6:18
And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord:
that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land
which the Lord sware unto thy fathers.
-God will direct their pathIt's important to have my children follow the path that God has for them rather than a path led by their own way, which leads to destruction. I don't want my kids to follow in a lifestyle led by sin or a life lead by selfishness. It won't end in anything good. There's freedom when you let go of your life and let Jesus take over. He has a perfect plan for your life and for your children's life if they follow his lead.
Proverbs 3: 5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
-Enjoy Fellowship with Christ I can't imagine going through life without Christ by my side. There's a song by Avalon (link HERE) that sums this up perfectly. No matter what trial you face, He is there. I want my children to enjoy that kind of relationship with Jesus.
I have a little testimony.....
A few weeks ago my kids and I were at Chick Fil-A and my car wouldn't start because the battery in my key apparently went out (I have a key-less car). I tried many times to start the car and the only solution at the time was to find a Walgreens and walk there with my kids to get a new battery. I looked one up on my phone and it was going to be a long hike, so I asked my daughter to pray. I truly believe that the Lord hears the prayers of children. Their faith is so strong! Immediately after her prayer, the car started! What a blessing! I was able to drive the car to Walgreens and there was a worker there who knew exactly how to help me because he had just had a similar problem with his key. He knew how to open the key fobb (which was a mystery to me) and replace the battery for me. What a blessing from the Lord! We were really praising Jesus!
So, don't give up....keep teaching your children about Christ because the Bible promises us that when they are old, they will not depart from it. What a promise!! Hold on to it!
Blessings,Jenni
