A funny related story. This evening, while I was buzzing around the kitchen in a world of my own, trying to navigate my other 3 house-mates, I noticed that Bayla had stopped emptying her lunch bag and was trying repeatedly to tell me something. I finally realized she was saying “Mom, there’s a bad word on this spoon” (the disposable spoon she had had in her lunch bag). I stopped buzzing and focused on the hard-to-read raised lettering on the black take-out spoon: “McDonalds”. Ha! That cracked me up!

I guess she knows how “we” think!

LOL. Made you hungry. I know that feeling! McDonald’s got in trouble a few years ago for offering toys that had to be purchased, via the happy meal, to build a bigger toy. I believe they stopped that practice with The Jungle Book II after received quite a bit of negative criticism and if I remember correctly a lawsuit or criminal charges.

I’d love to have this conversation with students at lunch while in the school dining hall to hear what they’d have to say. In fact, I’ll try it with upper and lower elem students and compare differences in their thinking/ways of articulating. Thanks for your inspiration Vivian!

Hi Vivian. Was listening to this podcast and shaking my head at how smart kids are. Of course my daughter could care less about going to McDonald’s for the Happy Meal Toy at this point, but rather because our local McD’s just renovated with a play structure in it. Which at least promotes exercise for the kids, but still when I asked her about why they built it she said: “So that kids want to come here ALL the time!” In fact she wants to have her birthday at McDonald’s now. Oh joy, oh bliss. Now if Tim Horton’s could just have a play structure attached to their stores…

Your daughter ‘knows how McDonald’s thinks” also! Kids are much smarter than we often think. Tim Horton’s ah yesss…Timmy’s. We head for Timmy’s whenever we’re in Canada!

Happy Silver Anniversay to CLIP!

I too find the McD Happy Meal toys to be quite problematic for me as a Dad and for my son. Thank goodness he’s to young to really “get it” so for now we’re ok. Heaven help us one he makes the distinction between “boy” and “girl” toys.

I laughed out loud at the McDonald’s Think Tank.

Hey, that’s right, this is your silver!?! Congrats Vivian! I remember when you were in your teens, it seems like only yesterday….
This gender segregation at McDonald has always irked me. There have been many times where we either wanted one toy or the other or both. I find the girls toys in general to be of a more supportive and cooperative nature than the boy toys. Those usually follow themes of war, fighting and competition. Their most recent toy, the Littlest Pet Shop which was the girl toy, is an uni-sex one that either boys or girls would enjoy, our kids certain have.
Sadly this is just another way to hook the next generation of consumers into buying their product.

Hi Vivian, Andy mentioned this show to me so I paid attention.

It’s funny, I mentioned this topic on a recent Dry Shave (#95 - Happy Meal)…I asked for the Pet Shop toy for our son, the people working there still got it wrong and gave him Yugi-whatever-the-thing-is. Oh well, at least it creates work for our waste management company.

I LOL at your walk down memory lane Charles! It’s amazing nowadays the amount of war imagery that permeates society.

Ross, thanks for your comment. I went over to listen to your episode and really appreciated what you had to say. It is infuriating how our children are being socially ’schooled’ with such innocent appearing texts like the Happy Meal.
