Time spent alone writing the novel provided a different kind of instruction. “I learned not to look away at the moment when I should be paying the most attention,” he said. “The closer I got to the heart of a scene, to the really difficult material to write, the emotionally challenging stuff or the exchange in which the conflict is made most explicit, the more I’d look for a way out of writing it. This was out of fear, obviously, because you don’t want to run up against your limitations in craft, intelligence or heart. It’s much easier to duck the really vital material, but it kills what you’re writing to do so, kills it instantly.”

The Center for Fiction has unveiled the annual shortlist for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize, a prize that carries $10,000 for a debut novel. Seven first-time novelists made the list. Judges this year include last year’s winner Margaret Wrinkle, as well as David Gilbert, Tayari Jones and Sigrid Nunez.
All of the short-listed authors will give a reading at the Center for Fiction on December 8th. The winner will be announced the next night at The Center for Fiction’s Annual Benefit and Awards Dinner in New York. Wrinkle will present the award. All of the runners up will receive a $1,000 prize.

Publishers Lunch has released Buzz Books, a free eBook collection of excerpts from "32 of the most buzzed-about books scheduled for publication this fall and winter." Buzz Books 2014 Fall/Winter includes excerpts from: Audrey Magee’s The Undertaking; Matthew Thomas’ We Are Not Ourselves; Jessie Burton’s The Miniaturist; and Neil Patrick Harris’ Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography, among many others. In addition, Publishers Lunch has also published Buzz Books 2014: Young Adult, a similar collection of excerpts for YA novels. The book includes excerpts from Meg Wolitzer's Belzhar; Ellen Hopkins’ Rumble; Eric Kahn Gale’s The Zoo at the Edge of the World; and Tanuja Desai Hidier’s Bombay Blues, among others. Both titles are available to readers in the U.S. for free through NetGalley.

New York City high school teacher Matthew Thomas landed a book deal with Simon & Schuster for his debut novel, We Are Not Ourselves.
Thomas worked on the novel for ten years and inked a deal for “seven figures,” according to Publisher Weekly. Publication is set for 2014. WME Agent Bill Clegg agent negotiated the deal with editor-in-Chief Marysue Rucci. Here’s more about the book:
Set in the second half of the 20th century, the novel is a sprawling portrait of the Irish-American Leary family—Ed, Eileen, and their son Connell—as they move from Jackson Heights, Queens to Bronxville, New York in pursuit of the American dream. Eileen’s unblinking determination to better the family’s status is challenged by her husband’s dedication to teaching—and ultimately, devastatingly, by a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s.
