Who would win in a fight between your favorite fantasy characters? I know what MY favorite thing about fantasy books is: fantasy books often have the most exciting, epic, earth-shattering battles. In worlds where anything is possible, magical creatures, logic-defying supernatural abilities, and even nature itself can turn any old argument into a knock-down, drag-out fight to save the universe. It’s so exciting!
Fight scenes in fantasy books always leave me wondering what I would do if I had the abilities or strengths that the characters have. Would I try to save the world, too? Or would I go on silly adventures instead? Probably a little bit of both!
Today’s Fantasy Books Festival post is all about special abilities. Everyone loves a good collision of fantasy universes
, so do a little imagining yourself: who would win in a fight between these fictional characters?
- Maleficent (from the Kingdom Keepers series) or Gandalf (from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series)
- Annabeth Chase (from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians
series) or
Hermione Granger (from the
Harry Potter series)?
Dragonet Clay (from the Wings of Fire series) or
Eustace (from
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) . . . as a dragon?
Who are your winners? Why? What are your suggestions for fantasy face-offs? Share in the Comments below!

Cast your favorite stars in a movie based on your favorite book!So many books I love have been turned into movies: Harry Potter, Hunger Games, The Chronicles of Narnia, Percy Jackson . . . The list could go on and on! And while it’s super-exciting to see how different directors and actors interpret the stories and characters I’ve loved on the page, I can’t help but wonder how things would turn out if someone else played Peeta
, or
Hermione, or even
Grover. That’s why our next
Winter Reading Games event is . . . drumroll, please . . . Dream Cast! Which actors would you choose to play the characters in a movie adaptation of YOUR favorite book?
Right now I’m reading The Lost Hero
from the Heroes of Olympus series. My dream cast?
.
For Piper, I’d cast Zendaya Coleman.
And for Leo? Cameron Boyce, obviously!
What book are YOU reading right now? If it were turned into a movie (or if it already has been), whom would you cast to play the characters? Share in the Comments section below!
PS. Are you coming to the Readathon on Saturday? It’s going to be EPIC!

The incredible Rick Riordan has done it again!! If you go to Rick Riordan's blog, (which you can find on the left-hand side of the page under "Links," you'll see a link to his new Heroes of Olympus site. If you click on the "About the Series" link, you'll see a "Sneak Peek" box. Click on that and you can read the first two chapters of The Lost Hero, the first book in the Heroes of Olympus series, which continues the adventures of the Camp Half Blood kids. Does Percy Jackson show up? Will you meet new campers? Well---you're just going to have to go there to find out!! I will tell you that you'll find all the excitement and humor you loved in the Percy Jackson books. If these two chapters are an indication of how the rest of the book will be, then this one will be un-believable!! The book comes out October 12 and the library will have copies. (although we may not have them on the shelves that day--it usually takes a while) I've got one on hold now!! CANNOT WAIT!!
PS--there's also a link to the book trailer--take a look here.
