1. J.K Rowling reveals new content on the Dursleys via Pottermore

J.K. Rowling has taken to Pottermore to release new content about the Dursleys in celebration of Dudley’s 35th birthday today. This was in line with the reveal of new content in Deathly Hallows chapters on the interactive reading website. Time reports:

‘Rowling gave insight into the backstory of Vernon and Petunia, including the origin of their names, both first and last, and their relationship to Harry’s parents James and Lily.’

Time also includes information on how to get to the new content:

‘In order to access the latest information on Pottermore, fans must first head to the Cupboard Under the Stairs, where the Dursleys kept Harry at number four, Privet Drive. As alohamora won’t work to unlock the new text, fans might want to look at the side table outside the cupboard first.’

Rowling comments on Petunia’s parting words to Harry:

‘Although some readers wanted more from Aunt Petunia during this farewell, I still think that I have her behave in a way that is most consistent with her thoughts and feelings throughout the previous seven books … Nobody ever seemed to expect any better from Uncle Vernon, so they were not disappointed.’

These are very exciting additions to Pottermore, which still continues to expand. If you don’t fancy the hunt, read in more detail about the additions in SnitchSeeker’s article here.

2. Pottermore’s Proud House Contest

In celebration with Harry Potter week in Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Pottermore announced a contest to earn 1 million house points for “the house that celebrates its pride the most vociferously” last week. Today Pottermore outlined the rules of the contest that will be this Friday. The rules, as can be seen on Pottermore Insider, are as such:

  • You create a post, movie, image or other creative celebration of your house pride.

  • Add your house pride hashtag to your contribution: #GryffindorPride #SlytherinPride
    #RavenclawPride #HufflepuffPride
    .

  • Upload your brilliant idea on Facebook, TwitterTumblr, or Instagram.

  • We will share some of the best house pride celebrations on the Pottermore Insider, Twitter,     Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram.

  • Remember, you don’t need to make your Facebook profile public for us to see it. Just make your     house pride contribution public.

  • As Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram don’t allow under 13s to participate, artwork from our     younger Pottermore members can be uploaded onto pottermore.com. Visit your house founder’s     page and upload your picture to the image gallery at the bottom: Godric Gryffindor,
    Helga HufflepuffSalazar SlytherinRowena Ravenclaw
. You won’t need to include a hashtag for     these pictures.

  • We will count all the contributions up from Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We will discount any     contributions that are inappropriate or that are not in the spirit of the contest.

  • The winning house will be the one with the highest number of creative house pride contributions.     This house will earn one million points.

  • All of you who love brewing potions and duelling keep going, as this doesn’t affect your personal     standings on the Leaderboards.

  • And don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of time after this contest to continue earning points through     brewing potions and duelling, before the next House Cup is awarded.

Good luck to all the Houses, and may the proudest House win!

5. Harry Potter Read-a-thon for HPA's Accio Books!

Earlier this month, the Harry Potter Alliance in Chicago had a read-a-thon for their Accio Books book drive. As many fans know, the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is an international non-profit organization, constructed by Harry Potter fans, that fights injustice using morals and themes found in the Harry Potter books. The HPA's Accio Books drive focuses on raising awareness for literacy needs world wide; in this specific event literacy needs close to home, in Chicago.

The Alliance for Awesome at Loyola sponsored the Accio Books read-a-thon in Chicago. This Accio Books supported two charities: Open Books and Reading is Fundamental. Eric Scull from MuggleCast, one of our friends at Mugglenet, opened the read-a-thon by reading the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Entertainment included Wizard Rock performances from Tonks and the Aurors, the Remus Lupins, and Seen and Unforeseen. There was a silent auction, costume contest, trivia, snitch scavenger hunt, among many other fun activities. The event weekend raised $1,571 to be split evenly between Open Books and Reading is Fundamental.

Congratulations to the Alliance for Awesome and the HPA for another successful drive, and being a force of fans for good. Hopefully there will be more future events held by the HPA, as well as the Alliance for Awesome, Loyola, to report soon.

15. Introducing the new LeakyNews.com: Leaky's New Multifandom Site

For several years we have been telling you to use LeakyNews.com as a quick shortcut to get to our admittedly difficult-to-remember domain name, the-leaky-cauldron.org. Yet as soon as we got the name and started using it, we realized that it had the potential to be its own entertainment site. The idea of getting your news as soon as it "leaks," the continuation of the kind of exhaustive coverage we do on Harry Potter with all the other things we love... the idea had merit, but we got busy with other things, namely covering the releases of the final books and films, and LeakyCon.

It was at this year's LeakyCon, however, that things started to come together and the right pieces fell into place: and now we're thrilled to announce the Leaky team's newest venture, the brand new LeakyNews.com.

Firstly: The Leaky Cauldron and LeakyCon are still Harry Potter. That has not changed and won't any time soon! We are still your number one Harry Potter community online and do not anticipate any difference in how often we update or how the site functions.

LeakyNews is a site made by fans. It is based on the idea that we as fans of things are the most detailed reporters and even the best loving critics of the things we love. To that end we have started purposefully small, with just a handful of fandoms -- Harry Potter, StarKid, Glee, The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who -- with other scattered coverage throughout. This list is solely composed of the things we wanted most to cover. For the rest, we're dependent on you: for our native "submit" feature, which allows anyone with a login to submit a piece on your favorite topic, or, if you want to contribute more frequently, to apply to become part of our writing team. You can find out how to do all those things right on LeakyNews.com's main page.

This is a really exciting time for us: it's fulfilling a several-years-long dream of the editors of this site, and a bit like the Leaky name is growing up. Instead of being one of a few large sites on one topic, we are one of MANY - hundreds, perhaps thousands - sites that are on many topics. Yet we're full of excitement and possibility and have a metric ton of ideas for making the site engaging and fun.

The site was designed by Jordan Edwards and made real by Andy Friel; Edward from Leaky will be covering Harry Potter there while Rosi will be handling Doctor Who and The Hunger Games news - I will be getting my Game of Thrones geek on with you all.

Don't forget you can follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook - we would really appreciate it if you did!

See you over there, Leakies!
