My favorite fairytale right now is The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and my favorite character is the (often nameless) Prince. In some of the older variants he is "the old soldier". The story is about a dozen dancing princesses who are driving their father into penury by constantly wearing out a dozen pairs of shoes every night, to the point where the King has no choice but to lock them up in their bedroom at day's end. Still they somehow are able to wear out their shoes every evening. He offers the hand of any of his princesses to the man who figures out how they are doing this.
The old soldier or prince character, through a mixture of luck and cunning, is able to figure out that every night the girls disappear through a trap door which takes them to a Fairy Ball. They dance the night away and return worn out (shoes, too!) every morning. I love this fairytale even though it seems a bit senseless and without a lesson, because it gives other storytellers free license to imagine a bigger theme and character development, as well as romance, with the fairytale as the framework.

Although Entwined is a retelling of the twelve dancing princesses, it stands on its own as an enchanting story, a fairy tale romance with unique elements of magic and suspense. Dixon’s story threads are at first golden and whisper light, but as the novel unwinds, the author weaves in darker tones. When Azalea and her royal sisters discover a magicked passageway, they all become entangled in a moonlit snare. Night after night, they return to Keeper’s Pavillion to dance. But Keeper, their mysteriously handsome host, is not all he appears to be. For Azalea, a touch of silver reveals the frightening truth about blood oaths and curses–her castle, her kingdom, and her life are all in danger.
Dixon has a special knack for subtle characterization and gorgeous detail. Azalea is no cookie cutter Princess Royale–she’s resourceful and delightfully headstrong, the caring eldest sibling to her motherless sisters. Along with protagonist, many of the other principal players evolve as Azalea’s perceptions change. Page by page, the reader comes to love Lord Bradford (the Princess Royale’s swoonworthy suitor) Mr. Pudding (an elderly servant), Lord Teddie (a surprising and silly visitor) and even grim Fairweller (the handsome, but sober minded Prime Minister). The dynamics between all players change as the plot thickens–the relationship between Azalea and her estranged royal father is especially poignant. The texture of these relationships makes the novel feel all the more satisfying and complete.
I reccommend ENTWINED for anyone with a weakness for rich, well drawn fairy tales. This one’s an absolutely lovely debut.
Hungry for more? Like Azalea’s mother, I enjoy a rich, moist white cake. This recipe is delicious, the same one I use for basic layer and strawberry shortcakes.
Binge!

So actually the 12 dancing princesses is one of my favorite fairy tales and Princess of the Midnight Ball is probably my favorite retailing ever so I'm so excited that you have it as one of the options!!!
My favorite fairy tale is Hansel and Gretel. My favorite re-telling (so far) is Beastly. I haven't read a lot of them yet. Thanks for the giveaway!
+JMJ+
My favourite faerie tale is The Swineherd by Hans Christian Andersen . . . but it doesn't seem to have any retellings. (No wonder! It's one of the more depressing ones. LOL!)
I do like the six short retellings of Rumpelstiltskin that Vivian Vande Velde presents in The Rumpelstiltskin Problem. They're very playful, very different twists on the familiar story--but what I like best about them is that none of them are trying to be a "definitive" retelling. (That would be Disney-sized hubris, which I've learned to dislike in Disney adaptations.)
Thanks for the giveaway! =)
My favorite is probably Sleeping Beauty, but there are so many good ones. My favorite retelling is Daughter of the Forest.
My favorite fairy tale is Little Mermaid. :) I love Jackson Pearce's retelling of Little Red Riding Hood in Sisters Red. :)
-Len of Musings of a Reader Happy
How have I only ever read one of these?! I'm adding them all to my summer reading list!

I could say that my favourite retelling of Snow White is in Once Upon a Time...I just love how bad@ss she is in that show! I also really enjoyed Sidney White. It was a really interesting rendition of it. I don't think I've ever actually read a retelling of Snow White though...I seriously NEED to! haha Like Maidenveil though, I really enjoy Jackson Pearce's retellings. She does an amazing job at reinventing the tales, and also with connecting them. I'm really looking forward to her next book which is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, called Fathomless. :D
I've not read many retellings. But my favourite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast and I really enjoyed Beastly. I liked how they used modern technology in the classic story. Really well done.

My favorite fairytale is Beauty and the Beast - because it is not only about romance, but also about redemption, and not relying on outwards appearances. Although it is NOT a YA book, but a work of contemporary fiction, my favorite re-telling is in the form of a very unknown, yet fantastic book by author Neil M Campbell called "The Advent of Lena: A Tale of Beauty and the Beast". It is a beautifully written book, where the pages are turned, and the beauty lies with the man, but the real beauty of the novel is Lena. It is definitely worth a read.
