So here we are again.
Today is the day.
LODESTAR, my shiny book baby now officially makes its way into the world. I can only give it one last hug before letting it go and wishing it well:
LODESTAR is now yours.
I hope you love it as much as I do.
The story won't always go the way you're expecting it to--and I have a feeling this one will make you shout at the pages and fling the book into the wall (or maybe kick it) and ugly-cry at least once (I know I did as I wrote it). But if it does, that means I'm doing my job right. (Just make sure you don't accidentally hit anyone when you throw it--this thing is heavy. You could hurt someone!)
And I hope the story also makes you laugh, and cheer for the characters, and keep racing through those pages until the very end (and yes, I fully expect you to immediately demand book 6--sorry, I'm writing as fast as I can!)
And LODESTAR isn't the only book I have releasing today. The NEVERSEEN paperback is also (finally) hitting shelves, so for those of you who've been oh-so-(im)patiently awaiting that format so you can read--or who just like to collect my books--THE WAIT IS OVER! Tinier, paper-covered NEVERSEEN is HERE!
Thank you for reading this series. If it weren't for you guys buying the books (or requesting them at your library), and telling your friends about them, and posting about them on your social media, and posting reviews on amazon and goodreads and Barnes and Noble, I would've had to cut the story short long ago. You made books 6 and 7 possible. Thank you thank you thank you!
Oh, and one small plea: PLEASE remember that not everyone will be able to read the book immediately. Some have to wait for their copies to ship, or for it to be their turn at the library, or for birthday gifts or holiday gifts--or all kinds of other reasons. So try to be respectful with where/if you post any spoilers. I have a strict No Spoilers policy on this website and all of my social media, so I'll be deleting any posted there that I see (and no, marking it *spoiler alert* first won't make it okay. Neither will "vague spoilers"). But I'll also be traveling for the next three weeks, so I won't be able to check in as often, so *please please please* save that kind of thing for your own groups and feeds.

I know some of you have already gotten your copies at my pre-launch events--
and thank you in advance for not posting spoilers in the comments on here if that's the case. But for the rest of you, TODAY IS THE DAY where once again, Sophie's story becomes yours.
I've held onto it for all these months, refusing to answer your spoilerish questions, and now I hand it over to you--all 688 pages! (!!!!)
Launching a book is always such an indescribable process--somehow equal parts exciting and humbling and heartwarming and terrifying. And those emotions only seem to get stronger with each book I add to the series, because I know how deeply invested all of you are in the world and characters of the Lost Cities.
I've done my best to do the story justice, and I truly hope you love the book as much as I do. I hope you laugh and cry and want to throw the book across the room and then hug it and reread again. It has some moments you've been waiting for--and maybe some you were even expecting--and probably several others you never saw coming. But whether you're surprised, or thinking I KNEW IT, I hope you're just as excited by the possibilities as I am.
And yes, I know that because of [redacted for spoilers] you're all going to be EXTRA impatient for book 5--and yes, you DO have to wait another year. I wish there were a way to pour the story out of my head and onto the page. But since I'm stuck wrestling it out the old fashioned way, thank you for your patience.

Wow--I can't believe this day is finally here!!!
I mean, I knew it was coming. I watched the numbers on my countdown widget slowly tick down to today. And I just did this five months ago with KEEPER, so you'd think I'd be more prepared for the nervous/excited/giddy/overwhelmed feeling that comes with launching a book into the world. But LET THE SKY FALL is ... special.
This was my "just for me" book. A project I started simply because I needed to fall back in love with writing. I had no plans to publish it. I didn't even tell anyone I was writing it. But the story kept growing, and the characters were so real, and the world became so vivid that I eventually reached the point where I felt like I HAD to share it--and amazingly enough, my agent and editor agreed.
Fast-forward to today, and suddenly the book I initially wrote "just for me" is now no longer mine.
That's the beautiful, magical, terrifying thing about this process. Once a book launches into the world it no longer belongs to the author. We had our time to play and explore and dream. Now it's time to hand it over to you. So... *sniffles* ... here you go...
I hope you love Vane and Audra as much as I do. And I hope their story lives up to the amazing support you all have given it.
There's no possible way to express my gratitude for everyone who's blogged / tweeted / tumbled / pinned / facebooked about their excitement for this book. Nor will I EVER be able to properly thank my amazing publisher, Simon Pulse, who have not only given it the most gorgeous cover ever (seriously, holy hotness, Batman!) but who have given so much love and energy to this project.

I've had more than a year to plan this post and find some meaningful, articulate way to express how it feels to watch my very first book launch into the world. But... I'm not sure the words exist. Either that or my brain is just far too loopy from all the craziness surrounding release.
Seriously though, it's a bizarre mix of emotions.
There's THE HAPPY that comes with seeing my book on store shelves, surrounded by so many other amazing books that I love and admire. There's THE HOPE that it will find its way into readers hands and hearts. And of course there's THE FEAR, which I am trying not to focus on.
But I think more than anything, there's THE GRATITUDE.
Not only does this book exist because of the help and guidance of MANY people (the KEEPER acknowledgements section is epic length!). But it also wouldn't exist without all of you. This blog was where the whole "trying to get published" thing became real. In fact, you guys were some of the first people who knew I'd gone back to writing. I met my Crit Partners here. And all of you have cheered me on through all the crazy ups and downs of this journey and kept me going.
I will never be able to thank you enough for all that you've done (and will do) to support me and my writing. So I will give you the only thing I can. KEEPER isn't *mine* anymore. From today on it's yours. And I really, REALLY hope you enjoy!

Javaka Steptoe is an award-winning, eclectic artist, designer, and illustrator. His debut work, In Daddy’s Arms I Am Tall: African Americans Celebrating Fathers, earned him the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, a nomination for Outstanding Children’s Literature Work at the 1998 NAACP Image Awards, and countless other honors. More accolades followed for his work on books including Do You Know What I’ll Do? by Charlotte Zolotow, A Pocketful of Poems by Nikki Grimes, and Amiri and Odette: A Love Story by Walter Dean Myers.
Once a model and inspiration for his late father, award winning author/illustrator John Steptoe, Javaka Steptoe now utilizes everyday objects, from aluminum plates to pocket lint, and sometimes illustrating with a jigsaw and paint, he delivers reflective and thoughtful collage creations filled with vitality, playful energy, and strength. His latest work, JIMI: Sounds Like All The Rainbow, written by Gary Golio, is the latest example of Steptoe’s vibrant and multi-layered style.
The art has so much texture and movement, and is wonderfully vibrant. Can you tell us a bit about the materials you used, the decisions you made, and how you put it all together?
I use materials that make connections to the subject matter of the story, with the goal of speaking to the viewer on many levels. I used wood because:
1. Guitars are made out of wood.
2. When learning about Jimi I found him to be very spiritual, so I tried to make my process spiritual. To help capture the feel and energy of Jimi’s hometown, I bought recycled wood at a construction store in Seattle. This wood (probably around when Jimi was alive) was a part of Seattle before it became art. So, besides taking images, research, and memories back to NY, I was able to bring back a physical piece of Seattle to live with, listen to and create from.
I love textures, color, and movement—they are design elements I inherently use in my work. Jimi Hendrix was a complex person, quiet and sensitive, yet when it came to his music he was very dynamic and even over the top. This book let me push that side of myself in order to capture the essence of this duality.
How did you and Gary collaborate? What were some of the challenges on the path to publication of this book? What were some of the sweeter moments?
I actually did not meet Gary until late in the process. We spoke on the telephone but historically most book companies do not like authors and illustrators to talk. Part of the reason is that publishers want to give the illustrator the same freedom and autonomy to create as the author had when creating the story. The other part is that they don’t want the author and illustrator to make decisions on their own, and not be in the loop themselves.
Some of the challenges in illustrating this book were keeping the story visually authentic. There is a lot of pressure in knowing that there are about 50 billion Jimi fans who all knew him better than me, watching and waiting to see if I know my stuff, and ready to send me hate mail if I don’t.
Sweet moments were in going to Seattle, seeing one of Jimi’s childhood houses, visiting and working with the children at the elementary school he attended, and talking with the Seattle natives who knew him or family members.
This is going to be a four part, seasonal feature. The staff at Color Online noticed lots of blog posts popping up listing YA/MG books to be published in fall 2010. The problem was that we noticed not many blogs were featuring books by/about poc. We've decided to highlight all the YA/MG books being published by Black people in autumn 2010. In the future, we hope to be able to do the same for Latino/Asian/Native American authors as well. All these releases make fall that much better (and who doesn't love fall?). A question from a blog reader asked, “Would you consider using a newly formed publishing company? What questions should a writer ask a new publisher to ensure they are getting appropriate care for their book?”
I’ve had one experience with a newly formed publisher–which I’ll write about below–but first let me mention a blog post on this subject on Writer Beware! The post is two years old, and due to the economy, it is even MORE true today than it was when posted. I hope you’ll read the entire post, but this is the bottom line summary:
“So unless you are absolutely, 100% positive that the publisher is staffed by people with substantial publishing experience–and maybe even then–it’s a good idea to wait until a new publisher has been in business for at least a year, and has published a number of books, before submitting. Not only does this assure you that the publisher can take books all the way through the production process, it lets you evaluate important things like physical and editorial quality, how the books are distributed, and how they are marketed. It also allows time for complaints, if there are any, to accumulate.
Tempting as it may be to join the rush to get in on the ground floor when a new publisher opens its doors, watching and waiting is a much better strategy.”
My Own Experience
My first mystery series fifteen years ago was my only experience with a brand new publisher. The man who started it had great credentials, and we met when speaking on a panel at a writer’s conference. It was professional from beginning to end, although his advance was a lot smaller than I was used to.
The first two books came out on time, but the sales were pretty low. (Thankfully I had had several mysteries published by that time because the “editor” I got knew nothing about mysteries and was an unpublished aspiring writer.) The third mystery ran into one snag after another, but since that happens sometimes, I wasn’t worried. I knew he was working on other books too and accepted the explanations for delays.
One Eye-Opening Day
I had several school visits approaching and needed copies of the third book, so when I had to be in his city for something else, I decided to just stop by the publishing house and pick up the books, as he’d said they were finished and boxed up.
When I finally located the address, I felt surely it must be wrong. It wasn’t in the business area of town–it was a residence. His home. No one answered the door, so I walked around the back and peeked in the window of the basement.
There were stacks of books and piles of papers everywhere. Evidently this was the publishing “house.” Literally! And it turned out that this man was the entire “staff” and he was out of money. Any books sold would be up to me. (This was prior Internet marketing, so I was stuck with the books and no way other than school visits to sell them.)
Needless to say, I wished I had asked a lot more questions early in the process. The books weren’t reviewed and fell through the cracks.
