I'm just rounding up the last couple of drawings for the next zine. I'm looking forward to getting a new one printed. It's been a long time.
The 'classified ads' drawings (see last post) are just about finished and I'll try to post them by the end of the week. So, if you've bought some advertising space come back to see your hand illustrated ads. In the meantime I leave you with this craziness. Who knows what I'm ranting on about in this drawing. It's very late at night, the time of night when you shouldn't really be allowed a pen and paper and a blog.

If you thought Rebecca Black was just a one-hit wonder (then think again! Sure she stumbled upon fame, but after getting more YouTube hits than Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga — impressive right? — it’s no surprise that Rebecca is continuing... Read the rest of this post

Here is a little quick sharpie-drawing just for you, to celebrate Memorial Day. I like to remember the things I am happy and grateful for every day, in some way. There are always things to be grateful for. We really should not get bogged down by the minute details of tiny little irritating things that may occur in our daily lives, so that they blemish the big picture, which is really hugely positive and generally fabulous. Be like a duck. Let it all roll off. Be grateful!
Today is our special national holiday to honor our troops past, present and future and all that they do to keep us safe and fight for our freedom.... so please enjoy the Monkey love! To our troops!

My theme for my sketchbook is... Raining Cats and Dogs!
This is my first drawing in my Sketchbook Project sketch book. Instead of planning this out, I just went in with marker immediately, and did a stream of consciousness drawing. I figured that would really be the only way to get the "halo" of the unblemished sketchbook. This way I can now feel freer to not be all perfectionist with it. It is a sketchbook, after all, and I like that fact...
I am using this sketchbook as a place for me to "be myself" in whatever form it happens to take on any day when I work in it. So the art materials and style will surely vary, day to day. I am sure this effort will be different things for each person taking part in it. It will be very interesting to see the variety to each book, both physical and conceptually, when I go to visit all of the sketchbooks at the Brooklyn Library next year!

More of a comic doodle than anything, a little comic done all in Sharpies and Photoshop. Stars are curtesy the Hubble.

I finished the thumbnails for the first Maddy Kettle book yesterday. Right now, the book comes out to 110 pages. It was a lot of work, even though I had lots of story notes and sketches the story went to unexpected places while drawing the thumbnails. I expect surprises while I pencil as well. Since every editor in the world is at San Diego Comic con for the next little while I'm waiting for the go ahead on this. In the meantime I'm starting work on a short story for Oni.

These are some thumbnails that got edited out of the final graphic novel because of a rewrite. It comes down to switching a local from rural farmland to a large town. I had a sudden, out-of-nowhere idea of a town wedged between to mesas called Dustcloud Gap and I loved the loose sketch I did so I've been overhauling the story somewhat. still, I like this sequence quite a bit so I thought I'd share it here.

This was supposed to be a much larger post... in fact this post was supposed to be a finished piece of art! But as luck would have it, on the day before Earth Day, I lost power (...ironically) and was unable to work at all. So I guess I celebrated Earth Day a day early since my power outage caused my carbon footprint for the day to be way smaller. :)
Anyhow, I did not want to let Earth Day pass without posting something. So here is a little quickie line sketch that was originally going to serve as a bit to be folded into the larger Earth Day piece that I was unable to complete in time for Earth Day 2010... And, as luck would have it, I was going to post a bunch of these, in rough little thumbnail sketch form, but my Photoshop did a nice job of crashing while I was scanning them in. So I'm posting just this one.
(Isn't she cute?)

,A couple of days ago on Twitter I asked if people thought critics affected the growth of a medium. Would comics be different today if critics had started to analyze them starting around the 1930's? What is a critic even for? Daniel Poeira had a good point: comics need strong voice that is devoted to comic book criticism, like a Letser Bangs or a Pauline Kael. Jens Altmann said "I think we need critics to point to certain works and say"here's where it's at"They can be ignored but that voice is important," And Joshua Dysart ( writer BPRD ) said " Real critics place a work in cultural context, bringing it into a larger conversation about the interplay between society & art," I personally think criticsm is vital to the health of any medium. We need critics, who aren't retailers, creators or distributers to point people in the right direction.
To quote Anton Ego from the Pixar film Ratatouille " here are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talents, new creations. The new needs friends, "

Have I ever posted thumbnails before? I don't remember. Here's what they look like, pretty crude and fast. I continue to redraw and refine things as I go but I like to keep my thumbnail drawings pretty spontaneous.

this is fabulous, andrea. i especially love how you've used layers, as usual, to evoke depth. love it, and can't wait for your latest zine. yeay!!
Amazing! I love how neat your cross-hatching is. Drawings that have such depth that you find new things in them each view. You've inspired me to make my friend her own zine! x
It was SO lovely to meet you on Saturday and see your sketchbook in the flesh (so to speak!). Thank you so much for my copy of zine no 1: I love it (especially the shoes page). We must get together to sketch again soon x
WOW. great stuff. after reading it all, looks like i am off to make a "PERZINE"
I LOVE this page Andrea. And the central question reminds me of a time a couple of years back when I had my students make zines and display them in the hall. My colleague Patrick overheard someone walk by and say 'what's a zine?' But rather than pronouncing 'zine' to sound like magazine, they pronounced it to rhyme with spine.
Ok, after this long comment, I'm realizing I probably am making no sense at all.
Ooooh I love those late night pen rants, the ones where you're actually just asleep but with your eyes open and then you wake up the next day, find your sketchbook, and end up asking yourself wtf does this even mean OR did I write/draw this.... I don't recall?! And the crazy thing was you were most definitely sober. Ah, I know it well. I think I might come up with an alter ego to take responsibility for all those incidences... Ha ha ha
