1. Selfies

Drawing self portraits might be considered by some people as opportunistic or selfish. I don’t agree. Self portraits are a great way to play and practice, and to also record certain feelings, emotions and thoughts. Each selfie shows a different you, because each time you will actually be different; your mood, your hair, your state of mind – they influence both your reflection in the mirror, and your drawing hand.

I like to make faces and expressions – to draw those I take pictures otherwise my face will cramp up! The pictures will be a great starting point to study features and expressions, look at shadows, colours and details.

20160313_selfiesWith just 2 colour pencils, you can fill a page full of expression

20160611_selfiePracticing hatching to create shadows and shades using a fountain pen

20160321_selfiePlaying with ink and experimenting with white space and a contrasting background

20160320_selfieI almost forgot about the fountain pen I filled with brown ink! It had been sitting on the shelf for weeks and I am glad I picked it up! Such a different style and feel, when using coloured ink instead of plain black. I coloured the background using an HB pencil.

2. Selfie update

Selfies. I can't get enough of them. Not with a selfie stick, but with pen and paper.
Here's a few I did in the past couple of weeks.

3. Art during breakfast

Early mornings can be great. At least, when you're a morning person, like I am. I love going for an early morning run while watching the world around me waking up, write up a blogpost or squeeze in a quick drawing during breakfast.

I don't even really think about the subject I draw at the breakfast table. Usually it's just what's right in fron of me.

Sometimes it's my husband, checking his email after he made us coffee...

... a selfie in the reflection of the espresso machine

...or again my husband, procrastinating on starting the work day by practicing a little bit of mandoline.

A great way to practice quick drawings, and people-drawing skills. But sometimes it's also a quick scribble or a sloppy sketch of my breakfast:

When is your best time of the day?

4. How To Stick To Your Art Habit When Feeling Down: 3 tips!

No thanks I don't feel like talking about the above. Still, I wanted to share this art journal page with you, and give you a few draw tips:

Tip 1
Whatever is going on in your life - draw anyway
.
It will make you feel better, even if it's just a little - it'll get your mind off of things for a moment.

Tip 2
Hanging out with other sketchers is also very helpful
- I felt lucky to join the latest Amsterdam Sketchcrawl. Lots of chatting plus some sketching - both of Amsterdam and of my fellow sketchers:

The Prinsengracht (canal) and some fellow sketchers at the quai side

Sipping fresh mint tea, chatting about art supplies, drawing, and sketching each other

Sitting at the bar - I am still planning to add a bit of text (a conversatiuon I overheard while I was sitting there) in the white area on the right page

In case you're concerned: I am feeling much better now.

Tip 3
Buy yourself a little art supply present
- it'll want you try it and before you know it, you are experimenting and playing... which will make you feel so good!
I bought a bottle of brown ink, filled my fountain pen with it and did a selfie - I enjoyed every minute of it.

6. Who needs a selfie stick anyway?

You see those selfie sticks popping up everywhere. It is so funny to see people get into awkward positions for just the right shot on their smartphone at the end of the stick...
But really, who needs that if you can DRAW a selfie? Drawing self portraits really never gets boring. Results are always different, and it's a great way to try techniques and tools too.
This one is done on Strathmore toned paper with cheap gel pens and a white color pencil.

7. Selfie Galore. And Two Tomatoes.

Eek! My favorite tools, color pencils, go so well with the toned paper as a background! I have to admit that the look of the portraits is a little bit too 'classical' for me, but I do like how layering pencil strokes deepens the colors of those tomatoes, and how the white pops!

And I really enjoyed doing that selfie on the left page.
A while ago, I found a picture of me when I was little. I thought it was kind of cute and funny in an awkward way and I decided to draw a throwback selfie (?) from it.
Not much has changed since then huh? I have bangs now just like back then!

Speaking of selfies... Tomorrow, the online course called 'Seeing' starts at Sketchbook Skool.I just reviewed all lessons, and seriously, you don't want to miss this.
In 6 weeks, you will learn to see better. Not because of a new pair of glasses, but you will develop a new way to use your eyes! You will learn from 6 different teachers: Danny Gregory, Cathy Johnson, Brenda Swenson, Andrea Joseph, Liz Steel, and myself. My Klass will be 'selfie galore', and I will help you explore how you see yourself and your art.
This Kourse will change the way you see your world, and it starts tommorrow!

11. How many hats do you get to wear?

20141127 hats

How many hats do you get to wear?

I know I need more shelves to fit all the hats on, that I get to wear throughout the day. On the first page of my brand new sketchbook, I drew just a selection of all the hats that fit me. If I could have fit more on the page, I could've gone on for quite a while.
You probably have many roles in life too; you're an artist, someone's child, maybe you are a caretaker, a friend, a colleague, you may be a parent... and since we're all still learning in life, you're a student too.
Sometimes life is overwhelming, at least that's how I feel.
Life can get so crazy and busy, that there's hardly any time to live it.
20141009Basel
Still, we need to stay focused on what's really important in life, and on doing what we love.
That's how I managed to illustrate the recipe below, by just making use of small pockets of time throughout the week. 15 minutes here, 20 minutes there, and by the end of the week I was happy with the result. And what a treat to test the recipe, to make sure the measurements were right!
So here you go, the recipe for a sweet and comforting choc-o-holic treat. (No sugar added, so it's good for you too!) If you have time to try it: enjoy.
Choc-o-spread
The recipe is published on www.theydrawandcook.com

12. Selfie

It had been a while since I  did a self portait. So what better reason to do one, than a fresh hair cut?
Before going to the hair dresser, I sat down and treated myself to a cup of tea. And after returning home -with bangs- I took out a bic ballpoint pen, and started drawing a selfie. The top half actually has a pretty good resemblance. But the nose, mount and chin are a bit 'off'.

13. Sketchbook Spread

Before we had all these beautiful coloured inks and watercolors, the old masters used Bister, or Bistre. It was made out of ground shells of walnuts.
'Bistre' is French for brown, hazelnut color, or chocolate brown.
I had never heard of this until my mother-in-law talked about it. She uses it in the art group she attends weekly. I got curious and bought a few bottles, that looked like medicine bottles from long, long ago. Then Of course, I tried it.  By taking some of the grains out, and dilluting them with water, you can paint with it. Just like with watercolor you can use it wit a lot of water, or just a little. Pretty cool! So that's the drawing on the right hand side of this journal spread.

On the left, with my ususal watercolours, I made a selfie the day before. Just because.

14. Selfies, yo.

Check it out! Deborah, who is an artist, a writer, and student in Sketchbook Skool, wrote an article about Skool, and what it's all about! Click here to read the article.

Well, Deborah says I'm known for my selfies. Wow, well, if she says so.
It's true, I do love drawing self portraits, and I feel very inspired too, after visiting Marlene Dumas's exhibition here in Amsterdam in the Stedelijk Museum. Amazing!
I am keeping up the habit, and to prove it to you, I am sharing a few selfie pages from my mini sketchbook here:

16. A Selfie A Day

Almost there.
When I started the sketchbook I'm currently working in, without really thinking about it, I filled the first few pages with self portraits. That's when I unintentionally started a new project. Because when I flipped through those first few pages, they gave me an idea: I committed myself to make a self portrait each day in this sketchbook. I would still be using the book as an artjournal, so was still 'allowed' tp make all kinds of other sketches and drawings in it, but it would also become my 'selfie a day' journal.

The sketchbook is now almost finished. Just a few pages to go.
Here's an update of some of the portraits I hadn't shared yet before.

Some are really to be proud of, some are rushed or uninspired. Some don't look like me at all, and others are fun experiments with new techniques or styles.

In the upcoming kourse of Sketchbook Skool, themed 'Seeing', I talk about how we see ourselves and about drawing self portraits.
There's an awesome line-up of teachers in this kourse:
Danny Gregory will show you how your eyes and brain can collaborate better when we draw.
Cathy Johnson will change how you see nature.
Brenda Swenson shows you how to see your own life through your sketchbook's pages.
Liz Steel will forever change how you see building and teacups.
And Andrea Joseph will help you see more in-depth than you ever thought possible.
You can sign up for 'Seeing' right now by clicking here!

17. Madrid - travel journal pages

Life is sweet. Yesterday, I got back from a wonderful city trip to Madrid, Spain.
I'm a lucky girl. My husband had to travel there for his work and we decided I could travel with him and to add the weekend.
So on Thursday morning, we arrived at Barajas, the airport. My husband took a cab to the office, and my little adventure started right there. I love travelling, and when you're on your own, the experience somehow is even deeper. Taking the subway into town was an adventure and my senses opened up completely. It felt like I saw, heard and smelt things sharply, and even the warm air from the subway tunnels felt like it touched the hairs on my arms in a very special way.
I saw well short dressed and high heeled women, smelled freshly fried churros, noticed elderly men wearing pastel colours, their checkered shirts matching the colour of their pink, baby blue or lime green pants. I was still underground and could already see: I am in the south of Europe!

The first thing I did when I arrived in the city and ascended from the subway into the sunny streets of Madrid, was find myself a Cafeteria to drink my very first, very spanish cortado: a single espresso with a little bit of milk.

Then I checked into our wonderful apartment we found through www.airbnb.com, I worked for a few hours (the entrepreneur life does go on, you know, also when you're travelling!) and then headed outside into the sunny city life. Had tapas for lunch and drew my view from the cervezeria.

Next day I visited the museum Reina Sofia and I was also told to go see the Atocha train station which is on the other side of the roundabout there. So I did and also drew it.

Early in the evening, I made this drawing while having tapas with my husband. Including greasy tapas stains:

And we visited the wonderful mercado de San Miguel at night, for a glass of Verdejo and... yup, more tapas!

I am still doing my daily self portraits, as you can see. There's just a few pages to go in my current sketchbook, and I will sure keep the habit of doing self portraits, but I'll be glad to not be committed to do one each day anymore when I start a new sketchbook.
On the 14th, we woke up to another gorgeous day and before heading out, I drew the view from our window.
Next day, just before leaving home, we visited El Rastro, the largest flea market in the world, held every week. Super festive. We walked and walked and walked, so I didn't sketch any of it. The only drawing I made was the one in the right corner, during lunch.

18. Film Themed Selfies in my journal

In my previous posts, I've talked about my ongoing self portrait project, and how I stumbled into an extra challenge of doing Film Themed Selfies.
So far, I've been pretty devoted doing these. I am doing a self portrait each day, and if I feel like it, I'll give it a whirl and draw myself as a film character.
Below, you'll hopefully recognize Sandy from Grease, and a scene from Spiderman too...

Some days are better than others. Didn't really like the muddy result of the 'Pride and Prejudice' Selfie, and the whole sketchbook spread is kind of bland. But on Facebook, I posted that quick selfie on the bottom left, and someone said: is that Nurse Ratched? Which gave me an idea for the next journal entry!

So there she is. And on Facebook, someone else suggested I could do a 'Rocky' selfie. So I did. I made that one after a super intensive thai boxing training, so yeah, I could really bring that feeling of triumph onto the paper.

Just so you know: I am teaching a 4-week online workshop on art journaling, starting 26 May. If you'd like to join for only $69, click here

19. Journal Pages

This self Portrait Project is getting out of hand, and I like it!
Doing self portraits gives me the opportunity to try out many techniques, and it gives me a lot of practice on making a portrait that looks like me (so far I haven't succeeded many times, but I'm having a lot of fun anyway)

On this selfie, I got a response that it had a little bit of 'the Shining' feel to it. I thought, 'now there's a fun idea! I'll try a drawing based on that famous film still of Jack Nicholson's 'heeeeere's Johnny!'
So I did.

Then, I got the question what would be the next film?
And.... another idea was born: to bring a bit of extra challenge, and to add diversity in my self portraits (it is, after all, the same face over and over again).
On my Facebook Page, people have been suggesting film titles and characters, that I could use for my film-themed selfies.

So if you have a suggestion for me... bring it on!

21. Journal Page: Dad's kitchen

Still going strong, with A Selfie A Day!
Hated the one I did on April 4 here in the left corner of the page. I had a sketch date with my dad the day after and decided to ignore the ugly face and draw half through it. I now really love the page, as I took a lot of time to draw my father's kitchen and get all those details and colours in too.

As you can see in the selfie in the bottom right corner, dinner was great.

Today is the second official World Wide Sketchcrawl of this year! I will be sketching with a group of like minded people in Amsterdam this afternoon, and looking forward to it.
You can find out more about the Sketchcrawl I am hosting in this earlier post or find a sketchcrawl group to join in your area by clicking here and type your town or city in the search bar.

22. Self Portrait Project

Suddenly, I got myself into a Project, even though I wasn't aware of it in the first place.
I finished my last art journal, and opened a new one. I chose a Moleskine Sketchbook this time, instead of the watercolor version, because I felt like I could use a bit of change. A different type of paper, and a different format than what I got used to with the last few sketchbooks would bring some nice variety.

Yikes, that first page was kind of awful.

I had to get used to the smooth paper again, and I chose to draw myself in the reflection of the open window, which wasn't easy at all... but hey, the book has a lot of new pages, so onto the next drawing! and at least I enjoyed the process, while sitting in the spring sun for the first time this year.

The next day, I took some more time and chose a familiar tool: I have been drawing with ballpoint pen a lot on this type of paper.
I sat in the kitchen, on the kitchen table in fact, and chose another challenge: my own reflection in the lamp above the table. Wow that certainly was interesting! Not just my own distorted reflection in the round lamp, but all the details I discovered.
A fun drawing, and a fun hour of drawing.

I had such busy days with the very first semester of Sketchbook Skool coming up, and a lot of ropes to tie together still... So I didn't take the time to sit down and draw something around me, like I'm used to do in my daily drawing journals. but what I did do, was snap a picture of myself and use it as a reference to draw just before going to sleep, a few days in a row.

So yeah, The Project was born. Why don't I do A Selfie A Day? I have this ongoing self portrait project, on which I work on and off, but wouldn't it be interesting to see how I draw a self portrait each day? Will they be reflecting my moods? Will I get better at drawing my own face and its features?
We'll see. I don't plan to fill this journal with self portraits only. because I want to keep journaling too. Just drawing my face won't do. And it won't be satisfying every day either. As sometimes, it just doesn't work out well. Like the one below.
Now that is just insulting towards my husband, whom I tried to draw from, admitted, a bad photo.
If I can I will do a portrait and drawing of my surroundings. we'll see how it goes!

23. Just 2 more days....

Oh boy oh boy, I am so excited!

It's hard to believe that it's almost 'D-Day'! This Friday, Sketchbook Skool is opening its doors and there is an overwhelming amount of students about to burst in! In fact, I think there's actually some of them already in front of the doors in sleeping bags, waiting to get started.

We have worked really hard to get everything up and running and the past months have been kind of crazy, but this week, for the first time in a long time I haven't had the feeling of being a few steps behind of my schedule. While checking and double-checking all of the klass content, I am so amazed and excited about the videos the teachers made! It'll be awesome and Danny and I can be proud of what we have accomplished so far. Fact is, we just dove into this without knowing what exactly we were getting ourselves into. We've learned a lot, and now we can focus on getting in place for the second semester (the teachers we got together are again, awesome!), improve our website workflow and planning strategies.

So here's what we got in store for you this first semester, starting Friday April 4:

Danny Gregory on why we need to be creative and what happens if we suppress the urge. How to draw expressively and yet accurately. How to choose art supplies. And much more from L.A.!

Me on taming your inner critic. On drawing better with colored pencils and on braving the frigid outdoors. And a whole lot more from Amsterdam!

Prashant Miranda on 20 years of journaling, on travel, on watercoloring and on discovering your family history through your sketchbook. And much more from all around India!

Jane La Fazio on mixed media, on how to uncover beauty and on turning sketchbook pages into developed works of art. And much more from sunny Southern California!

Roz Stendahl on how to draw animals of any kind, alive or dead(!), and what are the best media to use and why. And loads more from snowy Minnesota!

Tommy Kane on how to turn mistakes into masterpieces, and how to combine ink, watercolors and colored pencil to make rich, beautiful journal pages. And heaps more from deep in Brooklyn.

I'm not sure if I will be able to sleep, because of the excitement! Will you?

25. Yawn

Sometimes, when it's the end of the day and I realize I didn't have time to make a daily drawing or sketch in my drawing journal, I take it to bed with me. To do a little bedtime sketch. Yesterday, when I did so, I was yawning a lot because of the long day behind me. So I snapped a pic of myself and used it as a reference to make this self portrait sketch.
The funny thing is... each time I look at it, I start yawning again!

(ps. in my upcoming class on How To Design A Character, we'll be working on a lot of different facial expressions and how to draw them - this one has a lot of character already!)
