26. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 274 - 11.3.16

The Cubs win! And cubs of all kinds rejoice :) A history breaking and history making game for sure. Please encourage President Obama to create a new field of dreams by making the Arctic Refuge National Monument a reality! #wearethearctic

Very important that we think outside of the "box" on clean energy solutions. It's happening, yes, but we must double-down on efforts and not retreat too easily for the sake of convenience or expediency. The price to be paid for future losses of unique and critical habitat and/or culturally significant territory is far to great. A stretch of a connection for this #inktober2016 edition, but workable nonetheless! #wearethearctic #keepitintheground #ArcticRefuge #climateaction

Another late night postcard keeping school visits, coaching, and drawing and other work efforts in relative balance... and I thusly have no problem with the "tired" theme for this #inktober2016 contribution. A worthwhile effort -- and now I'm off to bed! #goodnight #inktober #saveourseaice

#inktober "dozen" prompt... So in this case we defer to the more regional popularity of the "12s". Growing up in Anchorage, the Seattle Seahawks were definitely the team of choice - back in the Steve Largent days of yore. The fandom of the 12's is a more modern thing for sure, but I'm fairly certain that most Alaskan' polar bears are rooting' for the Hawks.

The pace of change is "slow" and for this #inktober2016 prompt I will only say that we should speed it up! Advocate for change. The time is now -- if not already too late -- to effectively address the impact of climate change and carbon outputs on a warming world.

I'm a little behind on the everyday #inktober2016 creations, but thanks to staying on task through last week I'm actually right on target for my five post cards per week to President Obama :) Onward and upward, a school visit day in Wenatchee, WA coming up!

Yes, polar bears are THAT "Big" #inktober2016 While starting life at just over a pound, adult male bears (boars) can weigh as 800-1500 pounds and adult females  (sows) somewhere between 400-700.

#inktober2016 "Squeeze" OK, so I'm thinking polar bear hug here :) By this posting, and through the magic of #inktober inspirations, I'm actually getting ahead of my mailings to the President for the first time all year -- a fine place to be in celebrating over a year of sending polar bear art to the White House! I'll keep creating images for the rest of the month and will post them daily, but I'll stick with mailing five per week to President Obama. I'll have a requisite lag in posting for November... but the commitment remains through the first week of January. I will celebrate our first female President's official transition by NOT cluttering her mail box!

"Flight" #inktober2016 The Tundra Swan sets off on its annual journey east to Atlantic states. The #ArcticRefuge is a summer home to many MANY birds and is the autumn origin of four North American Flyways #werarethearctic #inktober

"Battle!" #inktober2016 Adult male polar bears will posture and growl -- shove and wrestle -- to establish dominance and sometimes bicker over food or mating.

There really are no "trees" in the Arctic. For this #inktober2016 prompt during #worldclimateweek, a small berry bush will have to do! #polarbear #arcticfox #wearethearctic

#inktober2016 "Worried" And for this National Wildlife Refuge Week a quick reminder that this whole Post Card Project is about encouraging President Obama to provide further "refuge" and protection to Alaska's coastal plain. Celebrate #NationalWildlifeRefugeWeek by helping protect the #ArcticRefuge once and for all http://bit.ly/wearethearctic_action #WeAreTheArctic #inktober

Lost. #inktober2016 And to some degree this week also marks a major loss in the fight against a warming world. On Monday 10/3 the CO2 concentrations at Mauna Loa observatory reached 400ppm -- and will not likely drop below that mark again for hundreds of years. Not too long ago 350ppm was considered the tipping point for disastrous levels of global sea rise... So important that we focus our energy and intellect on solutions to reducing carbon output and reversing these trends at least as quickly as we have created them. #saveourseaice #advocate #climateaction

45. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 252 - 10.6.16

I've done something like this before, but the image of a mother bear protecting her cub is a powerful one for me -- and something very much like what we witnessed last September as a large male bear emerged from the fog on a gravel bar north of Kaktovik... Hidden is the prompt here for #inktober2016 Already enough hardship and challenge living in the Arctic climes. The polar bears can deal with each other, but they are powerless when confronted with the decidedly unnatural extremes of climate change.

Sad. #inktober2016 But on a happier note, today the Paris Agreement Climate Accord reached it's 55% threshold (56.75%) for implementation. 72 of 195 countries have ratified the agreement and the new deal on climate emissions will start in 30 days!

After their annual September whale hunt, Inupiat villagers of Kaktovik, AK collect the whale bones into a giant pile on the outskirts of town. Polar bears, still awaiting the return of arctic sea ice, scavenge the bones for every little scrap of remaining meat and sinew. #inktober2016

Understanding the InkTober drawing challenge just a little more... and there are prompts! This is great and I'll be doubling-down to make them fit the Post Card Project wherever possible. Ink it is for #inktober -- and here (for the noisy prompt) we have a very silent polar bear stalking seals. As the main prey and most reliable source of fat and nutrients for the bear, there is a direct link to the loss of sea ice and the polar bears ability to hunt. Less ice = much tougher conditions for finding food = a major threat to polar bear survival.
