1. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 273 - 11.2.16

I didn't quite finish out the total sweep of #inktober days, but with this final "friend" prompt, I kept a polar bear in play for something like 27 of October's 31 days :) A few short months of my Polar Bear Post Card Project to go, and I'll be back to five posts a week for the remainder. Anniversary celebrations for the original Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to accompany Thanksgiving and the other major calendar holidays ahead. Enjoy the bears and please find your own way to participate in the greater political process - voting, letter writing, educating - whatever that might be! #wearethearctic #saveourseaice #climateaction #inktober2016

5. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 272 - 10.28.16

Very important that we think outside of the "box" on clean energy solutions. It's happening, yes, but we must double-down on efforts and not retreat too easily for the sake of convenience or expediency. The price to be paid for future losses of unique and critical habitat and/or culturally significant territory is far to great. A stretch of a connection for this #inktober2016 edition, but workable nonetheless! #wearethearctic #keepitintheground #ArcticRefuge #climateaction

6. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 271 - 10.28.16

Another late night postcard keeping school visits, coaching, and drawing and other work efforts in relative balance... and I thusly have no problem with the "tired" theme for this #inktober2016 contribution. A worthwhile effort -- and now I'm off to bed! #goodnight #inktober #saveourseaice

7. Inktober Day 28: Poor Children

Poor Children. Day 28 of #Inktober2016.

Today's Inktober is a little different - an extra illustration for a current book project, a new edition of Frank L. Baum's The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. This was a 'warm-up' drawing to get me in the groove and test nibs, so a little rough and ready, though often first drawings have an energy that re-draws somehow miss! Unfortunately, although there are several sections featuring children it doesn't quite fit with any specific passage in the book, so I've not submitted it to the publisher with the other cuts.

I can show it here though!

The book is in production as I write, more news on that to come.

8. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 270 - 10.27.16

#inktober "dozen" prompt... So in this case we defer to the more regional popularity of the "12s". Growing up in Anchorage, the Seattle Seahawks were definitely the team of choice - back in the Steve Largent days of yore. The fandom of the 12's is a more modern thing for sure, but I'm fairly certain that most Alaskan' polar bears are rooting' for the Hawks.

9. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 269 - 10.26.16

The pace of change is "slow" and for this #inktober2016 prompt I will only say that we should speed it up! Advocate for change. The time is now -- if not already too late -- to effectively address the impact of climate change and carbon outputs on a warming world.

13. Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project No. 268 - 10.25.16

I'm a little behind on the everyday #inktober2016 creations, but thanks to staying on task through last week I'm actually right on target for my five post cards per week to President Obama :) Onward and upward, a school visit day in Wenatchee, WA coming up!

21. how to make an urban sketch in ten easy steps

How to make an Urban Sketch (in the North of England in Autumn (i.e. it's cold)) in 10 easy steps;

(Optional step; Turn up to the location and realise you've brought all your inks but no pen. No really (I told you I was a rubbish urban sketcher). Go buy pens)

Step 1. Find a coffee shop with a window seat and a view
Step 2. Have a coffee and sandwich. This is one of the more complicated steps; I'm in the Northern Quarter, of Manchester, so will have to decide between ten different coffee beans, made in fifteen different ways, then there's the bread...sour dough, brioche, rye....
Step 3. Make a mess of the table
Step 4. Ah shit. Why did I put colour on it?
Step 5. Have another coffee. And a Danish pastry. Try to hide the mess you've made of the table when they bring it over.
Step 6. Add lettering to try to take away the focus from the awful colour work
Step 7. Pigeons
Step 8. Scrub the table then go outside and take the obligatory out of focus urban sketcher photo, whilst holding your book in front of the building with one hand and trying to take photo with the other hand whilst worrying that somebody is going to snatch your phone.
Step 9. When all else fails go shopping
Step 10. Reassess at home over a cup of tea. Followed by either throwing it in the bin or feeling a little bit smug.
