'Twas the night before Rock the Drop
And all through the blogosphere
People put bookplates
In stories held dear...

Want to share your favorite stories with other readers? Give a book away tomorrow!

People love free stuff, and people who love to read love free books. Tomorrow, Thursday, April 14th, folks all over the world will be dropping the book(s) of their choice in a public spot - in a diner, on a seat in the subway, next to a school, on a park bench - with a lovely bookplate pasted inside to let the lucky reader-finder know that the book is all theirs, and that it's part of the Rock the Drop effort being put on by readergirlz and Figment.

For more information about Rock the Drop, please visit the readergirlz website and check out Rock the Drop Eve: A To-Do List by Kelly at Figment. Also watch Crissa-Jean Chappell drop books like they're hot. Then click below to download the bookplate.

Fans of steampunk and fantasy novels, mark your calendars! From Publishers Marketplace:

Mike Mignola & Christopher Golden's JOE GOLEM AND THE DROWNING CITY, a supernatural-steampunk illustrated novel following an orphaned teenage girl, an aging conjuror, a lunatic scientist, a Victorian occult detective, and the stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem, as they struggle for the fate of an alternate 1970s Lower Manhattan, which sank into the water during a catastrophe in 1925, leaving those unwilling or unable to abandon it to make a new life in streets turned to canals, to Michael Homler at St. Martin's, in a good deal, in a two-book deal, for publication in early 2012 (World).

More details to come -- and when promised details are available, I'll post them at Christopher Golden's website as well as here at Bildungsroman, so keep your eyes peeled.

79. The 52 Weeks Project

News from Greg Ruth:

Hello Everyone-

I am very proud and excited to announce that we are in the final stages of assembling the long promised collected edition of the first two years of The 52 Weeks Project in a gorgeous hardcover edition with a beautifully written introduction by Ethan Hawke, but we need your help to make it happen. Designing, coordinating and editing a book like this is a serious undertaking unto itself, and covering the massive expenses of printing, distributing and publishing a book even more so. But you can help us with that last part- in fact it is your help that can make this book happen.

Starting today we are launching a fundraising drive through KICKSTARTER to make it all come together in time for the book to make its premier debut at this year's Comicon in San Diego. We're offering an array of rewards for your generous support but we're also asking you to pass this along via email, Twitter, Facebook and simple old fashioned word of mouth to your friends and contacts. Even if you can't financially support us now, spreading the word can help us bring this project to life. As you all know this has been an ongoing enterprise born of pure love for the work, and we thank you deeply for your gracious help and your generous support. You can visit the page by clicking mightily upon the link below:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/646222525/the-52-weeks-project

Allen and I will both be setting up at this year's MoCCA Arts Festival at the Lexington Avenue Armory this weekend from April 9th and 10th. We'll have loads to see including original work, books prints, copies of the brand new NYMTA subway and bus poster, and samples of the 52 Weeks Book. Please come on by and say hello- we'll be at table numbers C9 and C10.

80. Prepare to Rock the Drop!

Want to share your favorite YA novels with others? Do so in a cool way on April 14th, 2011 to show your support for Teen Literature Day. Here's Lorie Ann Grover from readergirlz to tell you a little more about the annual event:

Hey rgz,

Just a quick update on our plans for YALSA's Support Teen Literature Day, April 14th, 2011. You know we have ALWAYS orchestrated Operation Teen Book Drop since we began in 2007. Because this past December we teamed up with First Book in A Novel Gift, and helped with the donation of 125,000 YA novels to underserved teens, we are shaking things up a bit.

This year, we are refining our focus and simply encouraging rgz around the world to drop a YA book in their own community to celebrate Support Teen Lit Day. Why not make this the annual honoring effort? Imagine people around the world finding copies of the best literature in unexpected places, gifted out of love for YA lit. Everyone can participate to raise awareness of the day!

Soon, we'll have a banner for your sites and a bookplate for you to download and glue into your donation. We'll have other fun details as well. Watch for all the upcoming info, and be ready to ROCK THE DROP!

82. Waking Nightmares by Christopher Golden

Waking Nightmares by Christopher Golden
Now available!

Looking for a book you can really sink your teeth into?
Looking for a book that will keep you up reading all night?
Treat yourself to Waking Nightmares, Christopher Golden's brand-new novel about Peter Octavian.

Peter Octavian is - how shall I put it - a reformed vampire. His history is bloodstained; his powers as a mage, remarkable. His story began in Of Saints and Shadows, a novel which spawned a sequel, then a third book, and so on until we arrive in the present day, which brings us the new sixth story. I don't want to give away too much. Here's what the book jacket reveals:

When chaos erupts in the small coastal town of Hawthorne, Massachusetts, former vampire-turned-mage Peter Octavian and earthwitch Keomany Shaw arrive to investigate.

Years ago, Octavian helped expose the secret existence of vampires to the world, dismantling the Vatican's sorcery corps in order to save his fellow shadows from destruction. But without the Vatican sorcerers, the magical barriers they spent centuries constructing to keep the forces of darkness out of our world are beginning to fail, and things are slipping through.

Now an ancient god of chaos is awakening in Hawthorne, its influence spreading...and it's Octavian's fault. If he can't stop it, the blood of all human kind will be on his hands.

Waking Nightmares is the newest installment in Christopher Golden's bestselling The Shadow Saga, a brilliant epic that takes you into the secret world of vampires -- and a secret society sworn to destroy them. Sweeping, sensuous, and shocking, it is a powerful vision of immortality that will hold you in its spell...forever.

"Christopher Golden was writing kick-@$$ urban fantasy before the genre even had a name. The Peter Octavian novels are smart, fast-paced, lyrical and vicious."
- Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of The Dragon Factory and Rot & Ruin

"Christopher Golden scared the unholy $#!& out of me. Thank god I was reading with the lights on! WAKING NIGHTMARES is one deliciously terrifying, un-put-down-able book. Totally, compellingly creepy. (I hate him now and shall have to kill him because I'll never be able to sleep again.)"

83. A Hundred Words for Hate by Thomas E. Sniegoski

A HUNDRED WORDS FOR HATE
A brand-new Remy Chandler novel by Thomas E. Sniegoski

As an Angel, Remy possesses powers and skills only to be used if the situation calls for it. And the sudden reappearance of the Garden of Eden is just such a situation. Two opposing forces of immortals want the Key to the Gates of Eden, so Remy must turn for help to a fallen angel who is sometimes friend, sometimes foe - and always deadly.

Publishers Weekly declares:
"Sniegoski nicely juggles a large cast and throws in some touching moments (Remy's conversations with his late wife, Madeline, are especially sweet) and humor (as always, provided by Remy's dog, Marlowe) to balance the epic violence. There's more than enough nonintrusive exposition to let new readers jump into the story, while longtime fans will appreciate the development of recurring characters such as fallen angel Francis."

84. Interview: Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon

Being a fan of both Jack London's classic works and Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon's collaborations, I'm thrilled to be kicking off the blog tour for their brand-new historical adventure novel, The Secret Journeys of Jack London: THE WILD. The book officially hits stores tomorrow; the authors (as well as illustrator Greg Ruth) will be dropping by blogs every weekday for the next two weeks to share their stories with you.

Without any further ado, I welcome Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, and the legacy of Jack London to Bildungsroman.

Little Willow: What was the first Jack London book you ever read? How old were you at the time?

Tim Lebbon: The Call of the Wild when I was maybe 10 or 11.

Christopher Golden: I'm sure The Call of the Wild was my first as well--as it is for so many school children--and I reread it many times growing up. That and The Sea Wolf made a huge impact on me. If you look at the acknowledgements page of my very first young adult novel (which, perhaps for the best, is long out of print), I list Jack London as one of the writers who was a major influence on me while I was growing up.

Have you re-read any of his works as an adult? Did you find that your opinion of Jack's writing (and life) changed, or your understanding of the stories?

Lebbon: I think as a child you read The Call of the Wild as an adventure book, and maybe nothing more. But as an adult it has its themes and hidden depths, and it's a pleasure to revisit it. If I read it again in my 50s, it'll probably feel different again. Perhaps that's the mark of a great book.

Golden: I'm with Tim. It certainly had an impact on me as a child. I wrote a paper in high school on "Atavism in the Works of Jack London." I still have it, in fact. But reading his work now, you see more of his commentary about humanity in it. That's even more true of The Sea Wolf, which is tense and suspenseful when you're reading it as a kid, but a fascinating treatise on human nature when you read it as an adult. And I learned so much more about Jack the writer and Jack the man while doing research for this book than I had ever known before.

If you could travel back in time to Jack's era, would you dare travel the Yukon? Search for gold? Befriend wolves?

Lebbon: Someone once said, 'The best way to travel is by means of imagination'. I'm someone who likes their creature comforts, so while I respect London and am endlessly fascinated by people who go to these lengths to explore, I wouldn't get very far. Although .... gold, you say...?

Golden: If I had been born in that era, and lived the life that Jack lived, I would like to think I'd have had the courage to brave the world that way. But the me that I am? 21st century suburban dad? Not unless there's an apocalypse. :)

What inspired you to use his real-life adventures as the starting point for this story?

Lebbon: I can answer most of those questions with three words: vampire Polar bears. And Mr Golden can now elaborate.

Golden: Lebbon, you lazy sod. :) Okay, so...we were at World Horror Convention in Toronto, having drinks and Thai food with about a dozen other people, and Tim was talking about his novelization of the movie 30 Days of Night. He mentioned having added something about vampire polar bears, and I jumped in saying we should do an original novel about vampire polar bears and call it White Fangs, after the famous Jack London novel. One of us then said it should actually have Jack London in it, and the other promptly co

86. The Secret Journeys of Jack London blog tour with Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon

Are you ready to take a journey into the wild?

Bestselling authors Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon have teamed up to create THE SECRET JOURNEYS OF JACK LONDON. Jack certainly lived a wild life, which inspired Golden & Lebbon to create this new book series based on his real-life travels. They've taken his true stories and his fiction and mixed in urban legends and myths of the time. While THE SECRET JOURNEYS series is fiction, not biography, the books are extremely well-researched, and spooky elements add another level of intrigue to the richly detailed stories.

The first book, THE WILD, will be released on Tuesday, March 1st. When seventeen-year-old Jack London travels to Alaska to join the Klondike Gold Rush, the path he treads is not at all what he expected. Along the way, he encounters kidnappers, traders, traitors, and a mysterious wolf. Jack must face the wild head-on in order to survive.

The buzz for THE SECRET JOURNEYS OF JACK LONDON just keeps getting louder. 20th Century Fox has acquired the film rights to the series. Garth Nix, author of the Abhorsen Trilogy, declared: "A masterful mix of gold, cold, supernatural creatures, and dread magic makes this a great action adventure story." Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, calls THE WILD "A great old-school adventure novel and the best use of the Wendigo legend I've ever read."

Authors Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon will launch a blog tour the day before the book's release, beginning at Bildungsroman http://slayground.livejournal.com on Monday, February 28th and traveling through the blogs of YA/kidlit bloggers who are also teachers, librarians, and/or adventurers through Tuesday, March 8th. Each tour stop will offer an exclusive piece of art from Greg Ruth, whose stunning illustrations give life to the characters, locations, and beasts throughout the book.

Being a fan of both Jack London's classic works and Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon's collaborations, I'm quite excited to be heading up this blog tour. Here's the full schedule:

87. Bone: Quest for the Spark, Book One by Tom Sniegoski and Jeff Smith

Are you ready to go on the adventure of a lifetime? The first volume in a new trilogy, Bone: Quest for the Spark, Book One follows 12-year-old Tom and his faithful raccoon Roderick on an amazing journey to stop the spread of evil. Along the way, they make some unlikely friends, including three members of the Bone family, two Rat Creatures, a Veni Yan warrior, and a woman who is a cross between Mother Earth and a shapeshifter.

Written by Tom Sniegoski and illustrated by Bone creator Jeff Smith, with color by Steve Hamaker, this book is sure to please fans of adventure stories. It has all the elements which make a journey great: friends, foes, unlikely allies, transportation contraptions, food, good intentions, and sheer determination. Really, all that's missing is a mix tape. When surrounded by all types of beings and personalities, our protagonist, Tom, remains unshaken, making him a wise choice to lead this crazy band of travelers. Mal from Firefly would be proud of this young man.

On more than one occasion, author Tom Sniegoski has reduced me to tears - because he makes me laugh so hard that I cry. The man puts me in stitches when we're talking face-to-face. Now it's your turn, gentle readers. Between Roderick's blunt declarations to the bumbling Rat Creatures (who, in my mind, sound an awful lot like Lurky from Rainbow Brite), this may be Sniegoski's funniest book to date. It blends comedy and action effortlessly. It also has great pacing. The different characters' plotlines are balanced, then become interwoven, bringing to mind Neil Gaiman's Stardust.

The Bone graphic novels have a large following, and those dedicated readers will love the new stories. Thanks to Smith, Hamaker, and Sniegoski, the first installment of Quest for the Spark wholly captures the spirit of the Bone series in both picture and text. This trilogy will surely spark the interest of new readers as well.

While you are waiting for the second volume in the trilogy, you ought to pick up the original Bone graphic novels as well as Bone: Tall Tales, also by Sniegoski & Smith. (Sniegoski & Smith... Hmm... Kind of sounds like a famous pair of spies or secret agents, doesn't it? Watch out, Scarecrow & Mrs. King!)

On a personal note: I cried when I read the book's inscription. Sniegoski dedicated this book to his faithful dog, Mulder. We miss you, buddy.

91. Thundergod graphic novel by Christopher Golden and Albert Debnam

THE NINE WORLDS TREMBLE WITH THE COMING OF THE STORM...

THUNDERGOD is by writer Christopher Golden and artist Albert Debnam, with a cover by Michael Avon Oeming. It collects the mini-series originally published by Crusade Comics, and the final chapter from Caliber Press. Published by Digital Webbing.

A Note from Christopher Golden

I've loved Norse mythology since I was a kid but, oddly enough, was never a big fan of the Marvel Comics version of Thor. Most recently, I played with Norse myths in the novel Hellboy: The Bones of Giants. But my first crack at it was in the mini-series Thundergod.

Thundergod is a modern day story. Thor's been imprisoned for a century while the darkling races - disguised as Republican senators, tobacco company CEOs, and Columbian drug lords - did their best to ruin the world of man. Now, Thor is freed, and only he and his gorgeous wife Sif can see the truth. However, when they start doing something about it, all the rest of the world sees are terrorist murderers who are killing prominent citizens. Meanwhile, in Asgard, it's really hitting the fan!

It was a real guerilla publishing effort when we originally published the series. We had great pencils by Albert Debnam and a whole battalion of inkers, including the legendary Dick Giordano and the soon-to-be legendary Eric Powell. I wanted to publish this with Ed Dukeshire and Digital Webbing Press to keep that guerrilla publishing feeling going. They do cool books, take risks, and really try to bring quality product to the market and spotlight new talent.

92. The New Dead and The Walking Dead

The New Dead edited by Christopher Golden   The Walking Dead on AMC

THE NEW DEAD celebrates THE WALKING DEAD

With AMC’s new series THE WALKING DEAD hitting small screens on Halloween, many of the contributors to editor Christopher Golden's THE NEW DEAD, from St. Martin’s Press, got together to talk about zombies and the upcoming television show.

1) What's your favorite piece of zombie-related entertainment or pop culture?

John Connolly:  "I suspect it's probably The Return of the Living Dead, of which I have fond memories.  That funny/scary balance is harder to pull off that people think, but that movie managed it."

Max Brooks:  "The original Dawn of the Dead.  George Romero not only reinvented the modern zombie genre, but infused it with a level of social commentary we've yet to see in later zombie stories."

Rick Hautala:  "Gotta be the original Night of the Living Dead... Does it hold up? I dunno.  All I remember is seeing it in college and being terrified.  Like looking up old girlfriends on the Internet, some things are best left in the past.  But that was (and is?) THE pivotal zombie movie!"

Tim Lebbon:  "Okay, I'm preparing to dive behind my sandbags and hide from a barrage of abuse from zombie fans but ... I'm a huge fan of Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead.  A great opening, good acting, and a story that pumped along at a cracking pace.   Great zombies.  Yeah, they ran.  I liked that.  Made the zombies scary, instead of just gross."

Kelley Armstrong:  "Definitely the original Night of the Living Dead.  I saw it at far too young an age, so it branded itself in my mind as a terrifying and amazing experience.  I was flipping through channels with my eighteen year old daughter lately and came across it, and tried to convince her to watch it with me, but she couldn't get past the really old school special effects.  Some things from our past just don't hold up that well, apparently, but I'll remember it fondly."

Holly Newstein:  "I love the movies 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.  Entertaining and oh-so-creepy.  And Shaun of The Dead was a riot."

David Wellington:  "Oh, no one has ever done it better than Romero.  Night of the Living Dead, the movie that started it all.  28 Days Later is a close second, but... no.  NotLD for me, please."

David Liss:  "The honest answer is The Walking Dead.  I think Kirkman is brilliant (I also love Invincible), and his take on the zombie apocalypse is the most moving, horrifying and human I've come across."

M.B. Homler:  "Dead Rising, the video game from Capcom.  It takes all the elements that make up some of the greatest zombie movies and throws them into a Grand Theft Auto style world.  It’s the type of game you can spend hours playing and re-playing."

James A. Moore:  "Actually, Kirkman's The Walking Dead is amazing. Solid and well-written."

95. The Good, the Bad, and the Barbie by Tanya Lee Stone

The Good, the Bad, and the Barbie: A Doll's History and Her Impact on Us by Tanya Lee Stone is now available. Love her or hate her, you can't deny the impact Barbie has had on the world. This book offers quotes and anecdotes from many people, myself included. (Thank you, Tanya!) Here's the official book flap summary:

Barbie just might be the most famous doll in the world. She's represented fifty different nationalities. She's stepped into the always-fashionable shoes of more than one hundred careers. She has been played with, studied, celebrated, and vilified for more than fifty years. And she has unquestionably influenced generations of girls - whether that influence has been positive or negative depends on who you ask.

When award-winning author Tanya Lee Stone started asking girls, boys, men, and women how they feel about Barbie, the first thing she discovered is how passionate people are about her. Here are a few things they said:

"Barbie is really only a reflection of the girl holding her. My generation of 'Barbie girls' is now entering the world and we seem to be doing just fine." -- Sara, age 17

"Barbie, I hate you!" -- Luci, age 15

"How Barbie looked was never the issue. Not to the girls who loved her. It was what she taught us that mattered. And what she taught us was that, like Barbie, we could be anything we wanted to be." -- Meg Cabot

"Barbie has been the #1 most destructive force on the self-image of women all over the globe!" -- Dr. Carole Lieberman

The Good, the Bad, and the Barbie is part biography - both of the doll and of her inventor, Ruth Handler - and part exploration of the cultural phenomenon that is Barbie. Filled with personal anecdotes, memories, and opinions from people of all ages, and featuring original color and black and white photographs, this book is for anyone who understands that we're all living in a Barbie world.

96. Readergirlz: Celebrating Change

From Lorie Ann Grover, co-founder of readergirlz:

Hey rgz,

As we get ready to celebrate Teen Read Week together, we also wanted to celebrate rgz upcoming new format.

This October is our last feature as you know it. So be sure to share the love with Laini in these remaining weeks.

So what's up? Well, how about the realization that we ALL read way more than one book a month, right? And the postergirlz pick such awesome recommends. How about this:

* the divas choose a theme a month
* you nominate songs for that theme, and Little Willow will build the playlist
* we'll have a community service spotlight for the theme
* the postergirlz'll nominate the very best YA books for the theme, new releases or old
* one book will be featured EVERY Monday

*squeeeeee* Our Author Liaison diva, Micol Ostow, will be outreaching to each weekly feature for a guest blog post and will invite them to hang with us in the comments. If the author is under deadline and can't make it over, we'll still have a post and be able to chat it up, share the love, leave questions, and so on.

The readergirlz website will continue to hang with a final issue, hence that playlist you all helped build. And the fabbity archives will remain available for your book clubs and libraries.

Feel free to spread the news and be ready for quick changing content of the very best in the children's lit industry. Of course we'll still have Cover Stories and Story Secrets and other posts of awesome that the divas bring to the table. The rgz SALON and Street Team will also continue with their posts, along with reports from our rgz HOSTS across the country.

You know we are always looking for great ways to further teen literacy and social service. Watch for this changeover on November 1. So, what do you think?

Enjoy Teen Read Week, and always, always, always: Read, Reflect, and Reach Out!

98. When Rose Wakes by Christopher Golden

When Rose Wakes by Christopher Golden

WHEN ROSE WAKES
 by Christopher Golden

Now available in bookstores everywhere!

Rose woke with the echoes of bad dreams like cobwebs in her mind and the memory of a kiss still upon her lips...

Her terrifying dreams are nothing compared to the all-too-real nightmare that awaits.

An enchanting tale by Christopher Golden about a teenager who wakes from a coma and slowly comes to realize that she is Sleeping Beauty of fairy tales.

Ever since sixteen-year-old Rose DuBois woke up from months in a coma with absolutely no memories, she's had to start from scratch. She knows she loves her two aunts who take care of her, and that they all used to live in France, but everything else from her life before is a blank.

Rose tries to push through the memory gaps and start her new life, attending high school and living in Boston with her aunts, who have seriously old world ideas. Especially when it comes to boys.

But despite their seemingly irrational fears and odd superstitions, they insist Rose not worry about the eerie dreams she's having, vivid nightmares that she comes to realize are strangely like the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. The evil witch, the friendly fairies, a curse that puts an entire town to sleep - Rose relives the frightening story every night. And when a mysterious raven-haired woman starts following her, Rose begins to wonder if she is the dormant princess. And now that she's awake, she's in terrible, terrible danger. . . .

99. My 10-Minute Pet Portrait Needs YOU

(If the above video doesn't work, please click here.)

Here's the first time-lapse painting video I've ever made. I'd wanted to make one for a long time, before I finally did it. The final push at the time, was that my pet portrait days were numbered, and I wanted to do a video of a pet portrait creation before I stopped doing them.

If you have never seen this video, I really hope you'll give it a watch. I really love the finished portrait, AND, the process of making the video was exciting. (It was educational, too - editing is hard work!)

I am interested in gaining page views of this video because down the road, I think it would be cool to get enough views of all my painting videos to try to get a company sponsorship to make more. My fantasy is that my favorite paint company would sponsor me... Wouldn't that be great?? But, I can only pitch the idea if I have a LOT of page views and people who join my You Tube Channel. Can you help?

If you like the video, please rate it and leave a comment if you feel like it. And if you REALLY like it, please send the link to your friends so they can watch it, too... Thanks a lot!!
