26. SD10 Digital comics now!

jobsipad.jpg

by special Beat correspondent Bruce Lidl

Late Thursday afternoon, as Comic Con began to really hit its stride, as the shift from panel and show floor to party mode started to occur, the second annual “Digital Comics Now!” panel, hosted by Chip Mosher of Boom! Studios got underway.  In some ways the panel is a barometer for where digital comics stand in 2010.  Many of the same faces from 2009 appeared, including David Steinberger from comiXology and Michael Murphey from iVerse, while new members were Wade Slitkin of Panelfly and Micah Baldwin from Graphic.ly.  Noticeably absent was Rantz Hoseley from Longbox, an ubiquitous presence at the Convention in 2009.

There was breaking news right off the bat, with Slitkin announcing that Panelfly was about to disappear and is merging with some other multimedia properties into a new entity to be called “Syn.”  Details were sparse, but it would appear that at least one of the players in the digital comics space is exiting.  In general, though, the rest of the panelists were cautiously bullish on the prospects for digital comics, particularly based on the growth in availability and sales for comics distributed online (primarily via Apple properties, an element that remains consistent from 2009).  Steinberger was comfortable representing the admitted industry leader, as comiXology has the largest library of available titles, with over 2300 books he claimed.

Micah Baldwin from newcomer Graphic.ly was happy to play the role of the bigger thinker, and to emphasize what he sees as his company’s key differentiator, social and community features.  Murphey from iVerse seemed to be speaking for all in the group in characterizing the necessity of depending so much on Apple to be an acceptable reality and that some of the early problems around the iTunes have been ironed out, and things were “just not that bad” anymore.

Mosher challenged the panelists to explain how digital comics were going to expand the overall comic book market beyond what his research characterizes as the “300,000 regular weekly shoppers” at the 1800-2000 brick and mortar shops in the U.S.  Here the answers were very similar to a year ago, highlighting the potential benefits of bringing comics to non-traditional readers via technology, and to capitalize on the general pervasiveness of comic IP in the culture generally.  Steinberger claimed that the retailers participating in comiXology’s program had seen sale increases of “20%” but the general feeling was that digital comics were still too new to for much comprehensive data to be collected yet.

To this observer, the most interesting comment from the panel was really more of a question.  Baldwin from Graphic.ly, an admitted “non-comics guy,” talked about the on-going search for that element that will be the tangible answer to the change in revenue streams brought on by digital.  In his view the music industry has forcibly shifted its priorities to live concert sales over individual unit sales.  He wants to know “what will be the live music” of the comic book industry, which is a very interesting question for the CEO of a company that sells digital copies of comic books to ask.  Digital comics are, after all, the mp3 in this analogy, and it is the physical comic books that are the scarce good that can still be charged for, like music performances.  The price pressure on digital copies is likely to increase in a downward direction, as we have seen in other industries, including book publishing.  Because of the intensely collectible and visual nature of comics, far greater than CD’s or books of course, comics sales are likely to remain far more dependent on physical sales than those other media, while the successful price of digital comics are, in my opinion, almost assured

27. SD10: Dark Horse Presents Returns! And More

Dark Horse’s much beloved anthology Dark Horse Presents returns in a brand new print incarnation in March 2011 with all new work from Carla Speed McNeil, Harlan Ellison, Howard Chaykin and Mike Mignola among others.

Axe Cop, the off the wall webcomic about an axe-wielding cop, written by five year old Malachai Nicolle and illustrated by his adult brother Ethan Nicolle, is coming to Dark Horse in a collected edition this December. It will be followed by a three part full color miniseries in the spring of 2011.

Witchfinder, the comic series by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi with art by John Severin, returns in a five part miniseries Witchfinder: Lost and Gone Forever this February.

Web series The Guild returns to Dark Horse with a new five part miniseries written by series creator Felicia Day and co-star Jeff Lewis.

Dark Horse has unveiled Dethklok! a new comic from the people who brought you Adult Swim’s hit show Metalocalypse. Like Metalocalypse, the Dethklok! miniseries features the over the top adventures of Dethklok, the world’s most popular – and most dysfunctional – imaginary Death Metal supergroup. To quote the press release

After a series of sponsorship deals goes sour, Dethklok launches a new business venture—a line of frozen meals called HypothermiFoods—in hopes of reclaiming their metal throne.

The comic is written by Jeremy Barlow and illustrated by Lucas Marangon based on story ideas from the show’s creators Brendon Small and Jon Schnepp and comes out this October 6.

Janet and Alex Evanovich’s Troublemaker’s second and final volume comes out on November 3.

As long predicted by the internet, Dark Horse is bringing out a prequel tie-in miniseries to much anticipated child vampire thriller Let Me In entitled Let Me In: Crossroads, written by Marc Andreyko and illustrated by Patric Reynolds.

Milo Manara, Italy’s ero-comics superstar most recently in the US comics press for his X-Women oneshot with Chris Claremont, has inked a deal with Dark Horse to bring out a nine-volume collection of his works. The Manara Library will feature works unavailable in English for over 20 years in a brand new translation from Kim Thompson.

Dark Horse will also be bringing out a new comic Mass Effect: Evolution based on the popular video game series Mass Effect. The book will be written by Mac Walters, the lead writer of the Mass Effect games and comics veteran John Jackson Miller with Omar Francia as artist.

Kate Fitzsimons writes for Publishers Weekly, Publishers Weekly Comics Week, and her personal comics and geek culture blog geekiferous.com.

28. Del Rey update

alitkokmen.jpg
In the recent manga cutbacks, one company has remained conspicuous by their silence — Del Rey’s manga line, mostly licensed from Kodansha, has been quietly downsizing for months, with fewer and fewer titles coming out, and an increased emphasis on their home-made manga-like books, such as their Avatar graphic novels.

In addition, it is confirmed that marketing manager Ali T. Kokmen has been let go. Kokmen worked closely on DEl Rey’s manga line so the lay-off developed from that. (Kokmen is at the con, so if you see him, offer him a gig.)

Kodansha representative are at the show however, including some appearances at the Vertical booth where they are talking up a new English language version of their contributor’s site — perhaps looking to add more English-speaking creators to the established Felipe Smith.

While the scope of all the moves isn’t entirely clear, Random House, the parent company of Del Rey, seems to be cutting back on graphic novels in general, as the manga category softens and a lot of books that were announced with great fanfare over the last few years underperformed, such as the Marvel manga line. They are still in the space with books like the Flight anthologies however, and other licensed titles. And of course, they distribute DC’s graphic novels to the trade.

Developing.

29. Cosplayers make fun of Westboro Baptist Church bigots

201007231329.jpg
The biggest sociological story here at SDCC10 on Thursday was definitely the Cosplay counter protest against Westboro Baptist Church’s protest. The cosplayers outnumbered the con protesters — who had come for the health care conference goings-on at the Hyatt, and beat the bigots at their own game. Viva la fandom! Comics Alliance has all the details and photos.

It’s a good thing the Westboro gang didn’t know about David Hasselhoff.

31. Party Poop: The new “in” spot

201007211424.jpg
Before things get rolling too much, we would like to state that the Beat endorses the Odysea bar at the Hilton Bayfront as the new “in” drinking spot, replacing the nasty old homophobic Hyatt, which doesn’t like us at all. In contrast, the nice people at the Hilton Bayfront sent out this invitation:

Odysea Lounge at Hilton San Diego Bayfront hopes you will make us your “Con Bar” this July. We welcome all attendees of Comic-Con International to indulge in our fresh, hand-muddled cocktails and our dazzling bay front views. Come order right from your seat from one of our brand new I-Pads and enjoy Happy Hour daily, 4P-6P and 10P-12A. Our staff is ready to serve you throughout Comic-Con and look forward to making this year a memorable one.

We can attest to the awesomeness of these hand muddled cocktails, and plan to stop by a few times.

As opposed to the Hyatt, which is playing host to a health care convention which prompted an “add on” demonstration by more homophobic nuts, the Hilton is participating in programming and really becoming part of the Comic-Con experience. Support it with your drinking dollar! In addition, the BOOM! party will be there Thursday, so hopefully we’ll see you there.

32. Day 0 and my feet already hurt

logo1copy.jpg

Okay, we’re on the ground and ready to get Preview Night and there are some press events already going on, notably this:

Stan_Press_Conference.jpg

We had flight delays and other unpleasant stuff like a server meltdown that nearly gave us a heart attack yesterday, but it’s all over now and the real suffering can begin. Oh, we kid. There was a South Park marathon on Comedy Central that made the flight very bearable, including the classic World of Warcraft episode, the Logan’s Run episode and one about sex education where Kyle…oh we can’t say but we know you remember.

We haven’t had time to take the temperature of the town, but let’s just say San Diego couldn’t be more eager to welcome Comic-Con! There were e-signs up at BAGGAGE CLAIM for crying out loud. The signs at the trolley stop have been made over in Klingon. Signs, banners, parties, breakfast specials…the red carpet hasn’t been rolled out, it’s been shot out of a t-shirt cannon over the whole city.

The one person who was not eager to talk about Comic-Con was our cabbie, who when asked “Are ya gettin’ all ready for Comic-Con”?” whispered back “Yes.” and then fell silent for the next 15 minutes. He didn’t get a big tip, sorry. Tips for tips, people, tips for tips!

As far as the site goes, we have recruited a ground crew for our coverage this year, including our old friend Zenametal, frequent commenter Kate Fitzsimons, and — for the first time ever – Torsten Adair has been given a password to post. WOW, this will either kill the Beat or send it to new heights! Or maybe it will kill Torsten with excitement.

In addition, our entertainment reporter, Shannon O’Leary will be giving her own perspective on some of the non-comics events at the show.

Our team is unorthodox, and they do it their own way, but in that they resemble the A-Team and that’s how we like it.

From all reports there is Wi-Fi in the hall, so hopefully we’ll have semi-frequent posting whenever we can sit down unmolestered. (sic Steven Stahl, sic.)

And now…to Ralphs!

33. SD10: Bueanventura Press #1734

lisa_hanawalt.jpgAlthough they are out of business, Alvin Buenaventura is using his previously reserved booth to run a “going out of business” sale, sad as it sounds. Lisa Hanawalt and Johnny Ryan will both be appearing at the booth.
BTW, if you are the kind of person who is looking to score a true collectible, since much of the original print run of KRAMERS ERGOT #7s was destroyed, and it will never be reprinted, the remaining copies of this landmark masterpiece are indeed investments and worth every penny. I’d expect these to go very fast.

Here’s what I’ll have for sale:

• All of the BP titles including Comic Art Magazine, Boy’s Club by Matt Furie, The Gigantic Robot by Tom Gauld.
• Some of the few remaining copies of Kramers Ergot 7 which has been unavailable since last year. It will never be reprinted so here’s your chance to grab one before they are gone for good
• All of that “Other Stuff We Like.” Rare and imported goods that we’ve gathered over the year through our travels and were previously available in the BP Webshop. Minis, foreign anthologoies, artist’s books, silkscreened goodness, etc…
• Warehouse finds including back issues of Comic Art Magazine, and long out of print mini comics…
• A ton of original artwork and obscure prints from my personal collection by many of our favorite cartoonists.
• Rare comics and books from my personal collection.
• Also stop by throughout the weekend for daily blowout sales.

35. New Thor and Captain America art from Marvel

9490_2366551002.jpg
A lot of new Captain America and especially Thor movie art floating around today. From Yahoo Movies, two posters that Marvel will be distributing at their booth and panels, one presumes. The posters use concept art for the films and look very nice.

Also, stills from THOR from USA Today and Deadline. Okay, Chris Hemsworth’s arms may have sold us on this movie… as long as they are real and not just another special effect.

40. Schrödinger’s Comic-Con: no decision on move yet

201007190416.jpg
Well, we know you have all been waiting for the big announcement about whether Comic-Con is staying San Diego or moving to Albuquerque as the crowning point of the Run-Up To Con; with the decision made, you could either waltz around the city thinking “So glad we’ll be staying here; let’s go to Stingaree!” or else wandering around in a haze of nostalgia, thinking “It was on that corner that I met Mike Grell and asked him about Warlord! So many memories!”

But it turns out the decision will not be made until after this year’s show. And as the SD Union-Tribune reports, the reason is Hoteloween! There was a delay in hotels signing on to an agreement to hold room prices and make more rooms available, and then everyone running the show got Extremely Busy and just couldn’t think about moving or not.

“I don’t think all the hotels have signed contracts yet, and the truth of the matter is, because the situation won’t be resolved this week from our end, I think this is being tabled right now,” Glanzer said. We’re already spread thin right now. Ninety-nine percent of our time is ensuring the show is successful.”

San Diego Convention Center officials believe that nearly all of the 64 hotels participating in the Comic-Con room block have finalized their contracts, which can be reviewed once Comic-Con’s show ends next Sunday. One of the issues of concern to convention organizers is that they have some control over Comic-Con-related events booked in individual hotels, said Convention Center spokesman Steven Johnson.

Basically, the Con wants to make sure that nearby hotels don’t put on con-like events that will compete with the show — for instance, an exhibitor could pull out of the con put on their own event at the Hyatt — kicking out Al Gore in the process.

The story does show the city of San Diego and local businesses in a state of EXTREME ANXIOUSNESS over the con staying. In fact even Mayor Jerry Sanders is now getting involved — he personally called the hotels and told them to get cracking on signing those deals. You see? Mayor Sanders now is PERSONALLY CONCERNED that The Beat get a reasonable room at the Hilton! Wotta guy!

Personally, we think that the CCI folks delaying things has worked out just fine. The longer they look pensive and stare out into space, the more the city fathers of San Diego will do anything to keep them! San Diego will wander on the beach and croon!

San Diego the city is desperately hoping that THIS is the one video The Beat never has to post where this story is concerned:

41. SD10: Fantagraphics #1718

Where at Comic-Con will you see Stephen DeStefano signing with Moto Hagio? Did you even know such a thing was possible? IT IS! At the Fantagraphics booth where books by Charles Schulz, Jacques Tardi, Norman Pettigill, The Hernandez Brothers, Drew Friedman and C. Tyler will debut. And that’s only a smattering of the treasures to be found. You can find a Fantagraphics Comic-Con 2010 Pocket Guide here if this is too much to take in. Clearly, this is the place to be.

Comic-Con is upon us, and it is time to spill the beans on some major news. Fantagraphics Books is excited to announce that at this year’s show we will have no celebrity tie-ins, no comic adaptations of summer blockbusters, no TV show spinoffs, no videogame companion books, and no major announcements regarding digital distribution.

We do, however, pledge to deliver more cartoonists, more classic comics collections, more original literary graphic novels, more high-quality foreign reprints of international cartooning, more graphic memoirs, more offbeat humor books, more envelope-pushing anthologies, and more and better books-about-comics and comics history than any other publisher on the floor.

Next week, Fantagraphics Books will close up shop in Seattle and relocate for one week to San Diego, CA for the 2010 Comic-Con International (to booth #1718, to be exact). 43. SD10: Rob Hanes Adventurer – K1

1255047437_tYCvRQwdUi.jpg
In the seasonal ocean of hype and comics companies whose main attraction is some actor signing some comic, there are still oases of good old comic books. And also people who send out fine little news releases and pictures of comics. Such a person is Randy Reynaldo, who has been at this a while but still sends out a nice. concise news bit. And he always gets his own news item, like this. Because he did it right. This time out, Reynaldo will premiere the first ever collection of Rob Hanes, Adventurer.

“Randy encourages everyone to support small independent comics publishers by visiting his booth (K1) and the other tables in the Small Press Pavilion.” And so do we!

Randy Reynaldo, publisher of WCG Comics and the writer-artist-creator of the long-running classic adventure indie comic-book series Rob Hanes Adventures, will be making his eighth consecutive exhibitor’s appearance (and 13th overall) at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. Randy’s booth will be at a new location from previous years: Booth K1 in the Small Press Pavilion of the floor, near where aisle 1500 terminates in the small press area.

At this year’s show, Randy will be promoting the first trade paperback compilation of his series, Rob Hanes Adventures, Vol. 0, which is scheduled to be released in September 2010. The collection was just solicited to retailers and consumers in the July issue of Diamond’s Previews catalog. The softcover trade paperback will retail for $15.99 and feature six complete adventures from 1994–96, and 140 black-and-white pages. All the stories have been digitally re-lettered for the new collection, replacing the hand-lettering of the original series. The trade is a great way for new readers to discover the series and for long-time fans to read the stories in a new, fresh and permanent bookshelf format.

In addition, WCG will debut a new special full-color comic-book edition of Rob Hanes Adventures at the show. The special edition marks marks the first time the series is available in full color in print. The edition features a cover price of $3.99 and 32 full-color pages.
In limited quantities, Randy will be giving away back issues for free for promotional purposes, and have new bookmarks and promotional pins available with purchase.

Randy encourages everyone to support small independent comics publishers by visiting his booth (K1) and the other tables in the Small Press Pavilion.

49. SD10: TwoMorrows #1301

201007180353.jpg
From Kirby to Colletta to Legos, you will learn a lot at the TwoMorrows booth. The big debut is the book on Vinnie Colletta — who says there is no comics in Comic-Con?

On July 21, TwoMorrows Publishing will make their 16th consecutive appearance at Comic-Con International: San Diego. The company will again be exhibiting at booth #1301, in their usual spot in front of the San Diego Convention Center, just inside the doors for Hall C, and bringing with them a literal ton (more than 2000 lbs.—we weighed it and shipped it there!) of printed goodness for fans of comics and LEGO.

Debuting at Comic-Con will be the new book THE THIN BLACK LINE: PERSPECTIVES ON VINCE COLLETTA, by Robert L. Bryant Jr. Vince Colletta has long been a controversial figure in comics history, known for his ability to ink an entire comic book over a weekend when needed, but often taking some startling shortcuts to meet his deadlines. In anticipation of the book’s release, TwoMorrows is letting readers download a FREE 5mb PDF preview of the chapter on Colletta’s THOR work at this link:

Also at Comic-Con International 2010, TwoMorrows will debut:

Alter Ego #95 (the Marie Severin/humor issue of Roy Thomas’ Eisner Award nominated magazine)
Back Issue #42 (the Wild West issue, cover-featuring a retrospective on Jonah Hex)
BrickJournal Compendium 4 (compiling never-printed digital issues of TwoMorrows LEGO magazine)

Other new items TwoMorrows will have on hand include:
Age of TV Heroes (showcasing the live-action TV appearances of comic book characters)
Sal Buscema: Comics’ Fast & Furious Artist
Recent Modern Masters books on Mark Buckingham and Guy Davis

TwoMorrows will also have a limited number of DVD and Blue-ray copies for sale of the acclaimed documentary Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist in conjunction with Montilla Productions, the documentary’s producers. The DVD hits stores in early August, but will only be available at Comic-Con at booth #1301.

Other TwoMorrows Comic-Con related items of note:

• On Friday night, July 23, the annual Eisner Awards ceremony takes place, honoring the best in comics from the previous year. Roy Thomas’ ALTER EGO is again nominated for Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism, a category the magazine won in 2007.

• For those that missed the company’s recent Half-Price Magazine Sale, TwoMorrows will be bringing hundreds of back issues and older books, all available at 50% off cover price.

• On Thursday, July 22 at 2:30 pm in Room 7AB, TwoMorrows will be presenting the panel BrickJournal: Looking at the LEGO Community. In the past decade, a community of adult LEGO builders has sprung up and created models, websites, and even conventions. The staff of TwoMorrows’ BrickJournal, the magazine for LEGO enthusiasts of all ages, will take a look at the community (and what it builds) at this talk, with Brandon Griffith (top LEGO builder), Jonathan Bender (author of LEGO: A Love Story), Nathan Sawaya (LEGO Certified Professional builder), and Jim Foulds (Community Operations Manager, Community Development – Americas and Australia, for the LEGO Group). The panel will be moderated by BrickJournal editor Joe Meno, and there will also be a Q&A afterward.

• Nathan Sawaya and Jonathan Bender will be signing at booth #1301 after the BrickJournal panel from 4-5pm Thursday, July 22. Sawaya will be signing again from 4-5pm Friday, July 23.

• Rand Hoppe, curator of the online Jack Kirby Museum (www.kirbymuseum.org) will be at the TwoMorrows booth for all of Comic-Con, with his large for

50. SD10: Exhibit A #1909

GodsMustBe cover72.jpg
Batton Lash and Exhibit A Press are back again with a new book. Details below:

Exhibit A Press will have a new limited-edition Supernatural Law book at Comic-Con: The Gods Must Be Litigious:

When the Medusa decides to write a book—watch out! The Gorgon of Greek mythology, whose glance can turn people to stone, has been creating controversy on Earth as a bestselling author. Her highly opinionated How to Talk to a Mortal (If You Must) has brought her speaking engagements, TV talk show appearances—and lots of enemies! One of her most outspoken critics is editorial cartoonist ed Thrall, who is unrelenting in his cartoon attacks. Will the Medusa reach her breaking point and turn him to stone? How long  will Zeus tolerate all this nonsense on Earth? Looks like Medusa’s going to need some lawyers! And those lawyers are of course Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre.

The book sells for $8.95 and will be available (while supplies last) at the Exhibit A Press booth, #1909. Cartoonist Batton Lash will be on hand to sign copies.
