I love fairies, don't you?
They are of course magical, but also I think they really touch that inner child in all of us.
I will be using some of these fairies on our PBJunkies promo postcard which we'll be sending out soon.

Well, princesses will have to wait until the fairies fly South for the winter.
I have been given a new project involving these wonderful wee folk, and it's been quite some time since I have painted them. Almost two years in fact! I think I've done one or two here and there, but not many.
To catch you up to date, here are the new members of the portfolio family. It's been interesting to see how the added styles and techniques I've acquired over the last couple of years is being translated into the fairies.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to enter a fae world? Dark and mysterious? Light and majestic? Awe-inspiring? Terrifying?
Like humans, they all have their own interests, agendas, likes and dislikes.
The Dark Fae
They're not Tinker Bell-tiny, or make funny little tinkling bell sounds to get someone's attention.
The Deadly Fae
They don't always get what they want but it doesn't deter them from trying.
The Winged Fae
They have human desires but magical powers.
The Ancient Fae
They can be devilishly fun and devilishly bad.

Soft moss a downy pillow makes, and green leaves spread a tent,
Where Faerie fold may rest and sleep until their night is spent.
The bluebird sings a lullaby, the firefly gives a light,

The Winged Fae
The World of Fae
Authored by Terry Spear, Terry SpearSerena, a royal member of the Mabara winged fae, has one goal in mind. Stop an impending marriage with a dark fae. As the fae are known to do, she stirs up trouble that she hopes will make her point and get her off the hook. Only nothing goes as she plans.
Niall, a royal member of the Denkar, aka the dark fae, is visiting South Padre Island when he catches a winged fae painting graffiti on a wall on the island claimed by his people. He is at once fascinated with the lovely girl and intrigued by her audacity, but as one of the Denkar, he must take her to task. Yet she's armed with a sleeping potion that makes his life intolerable. Between freeing her from his people's dungeon, her own tower, and fighting a knight in her honor, he wonders if he's lost his mind over one beautiful winged fae--when she's betrothed to his cousin!

For the love of words
I was the guest speaker at Meadowcreek Elementary earlier this week. Speaking to hundreds of children at one time is not unusual and it never gets old. I always discuss the following things: the writing process that I personally use, how I got started, my favorite authors, my motivation and inspiration, and of course my characters Lilly, Boris & Jack, from the Mischief series, specifically Mischief in the Mushroom Patch.’ Also, it’s impossible not to mention Pearle, who joins them in ‘A Fairy Match in the Mushroom Patch.’
That day I told the children that when a writer writes a story, they never know who they’re going to touch and I demonstrated my point via Pearle’s story. (It’s beautiful and can be found in an older blog post). Even my latest novel, ‘The Ghost of Whispering Willow’ has a story behind the story. It just seems to work out that way and is often unintentional. I also told them that they shouldn’t worry if other people like their work. It’s their story and it can’t possibly be wrong. If they love their story first, someone else will likely like it. That’s where it all starts, someone liking your story and sharing it with others.
The children are always amazing, each and every one of them. At the end of my presentation, several children wrapped their arms around me and told me that they wanted to be writers too. That’s when I knew that I’d accomplished what I set out to do. Share, inspire, and hopefully motivate the children I spoke with that day.
What I didn’t know during my presentations was that I had caught the attention of several teachers. Many stayed behind to visit, principal included. Three of them were aspiring writers, one was an author, and one wanted to dabble but hadn’t yet taken the first step, which was writing down their fabulous thoughts and ideas. We discussed the market, the changing industry, and starting a writers group. We also talked about the pieces we were currently writing.
Listening to these writers and potential writers, men and women, was refreshing. I understood where they were coming from. I have changed so much over the years. The way I write and my thoughts about writing, even my approach to writing my manuscripts has changed over the years. Growth is a beautiful thing, and something one should never be afraid of. I choose to embrace growth; not to run away from or be afraid of it. Change is often good.
I received beautiful emails that day from several staff members, and invitations to guest speak at other schools that they were affiliated with. I was certain I had done my job with the children, I just had no idea that my words would connect with the adults in the room. It was truly amazing. We all loved the same thing: words. Writers….For the love of words!

"The quiet midnight warrior, without a sound, brings glory to her King ." |
One: it is rare for my paintings to appear looking at the viewer. "Lusinga", "Roseilee", and "Mourning" are the only ones....recently...that look at you. "Lusinga" and "Mourning" are some of my top sellers.
Two: The movement feels like a quiet moment, paused or in slow motion, as she passes by me while I'm on a night walk.
Three: Her wisdom and strength just presses upon my chest and makes me hold my breath....in a good way. The only thing I can compare that to is when I've seen a buck in our front yard during the winter. It's such a serene and heavenly moment that you want to last forever because of the majesty it represents.
Four: I see God in her eyes and in her breath. I'm astounded by that.
It's hard to believe she's only 4x6 inches, and the piece took me less than 48 hours. This is truly a piece by me from God. And I am in awe of his Majesty.

A Painting for Halloween
I don't normally paint for Halloween. It's been years since I even had the desire to. Now...that's not saying I don't like Halloween, but my work tends to be something that could be used year round. I like that. But I do so love a good mask, so I thought I'd paint one. :)
Here's the work in progress. She's pretty small; a 4x6 painting. Something quick but elegant. I have always wanted to throw a Masquerade Ball, hopefully someday I will. But until then, I must live through my paintings.
I hope to have her finished by the end of the week. If not, I'll go crazy! Not quite sure what to call her yet...
Have you ever been to a Masquerade Ball? If so, was it as much fun as they look? I want to know!

It has officially begun, a new series.
I need your help!
Please keep me accountable for this series. Comment here or on Facebook, say how much you want to see your month, give ideas or suggestions, or just yell out "Hey, where's the next month?! It's been WEEKS!". :P
I want to do all twelve months. Here are the guidelines for my flower fairies...
Each piece will show:
- The month's flower
- The month's birthstone colors
- A moon or sun
- A braid of some sort in the hair (to me this is a symbol of God's warrior princess, or a daughter of God)
- Something in the background having to do with the month and/or season
- Must have a "Mucha" feeling. Yes, it has been done before, but I've been wanting to do it for a while and this is my chance.
- Incorporate something from my pencil drawings (the birthstones).
Since August is almost over I started with October. She's done entirely in watercolor, no colored pencil. It's been a while since I've done that.

Publisher’s description: Ever since he rescued her from Certain Death, Rose Brier has had a crush on Ben Denniston, otherwise known as Fish. But Fish, struggling with problems of his own, thinks that Rose should go looking elsewhere for a knight in shining armor. Trying to forget him, Rose goes to college, takes up with a sword-wielding band of brothers, and starts an investigation into her family’s past that proves increasingly mysterious. Then a tragic accident occurs, and Fish, assisted by Rose’s new friends, finds himself drawn into a search through a tangle of revenge and corruption that might be threatening Rose’s very life. The climax is a crucible of fear, fight, and fire that Fish must pass through to reach Rose and conquer his dragons.
Our thoughts:
It is difficult to capture the essence of this story coherently because it touches upon so many aspects of life. There is the mystery, of course, and continuing depth of family loyalty amongst the Briers. The craziness of those first years experienced when young adults leave their nest and venture into the outer world of college life, whether as newbie freshmen or advanced graduate students. Unlikely friendships as the strong nurture the weak with Kateri mentoring Donna in her mental illness, and Rose guiding Fish through abuse recovery. Fish’s loyalty to Rose, taken to the extreme, becomes unforgiving. But then self-denigration turns into enlightenment and hope.
And after all of that is said, we are left with the relationship of Fish and Rose finally reaching a neat and tidy conclusion :>)
The girls have progressed in the series to young adults. Blanche just married Bear and Rose is off to college. Fish continues in his college program too. Doman shows us the challenges young adults face when they first enter the world on their own, particularly in making friends and exploring crushes. We can imagine ourselves engaged in the chit chat and horseplay typical in budding relationships. Important also is the picture implanted in our mind of courtship.
Throughout the story, we can see the existence of three pillars: faith, family and friends. Whenever one of these pillars is weakened, internal conflict and unsafe situations arise. Maintaining the balance, we see Rose’s keen ability for discernment that has been honed as a result of consistency in faith life, family home “culture, and choice of friends. Her discernment is key to good decisions, keeping safe, etc.
Going beyond stereotypes, the dialogue paints a clear picture of the perceptions held by non-Christians against Christians, countered with a realistic portrayal of the passionate young Christian student. Previous books portrayed ac

Prince Andy and the Misfits: Shadow Man
Gammons, Karen. (2011). Prince Andy and the Misfits: Shadow Man. Mustang, OK: Tate Publishing. ISBN 10-9781616636197. Litland.com recommends 14+, appropriate for younger advanced readers.
Publisher’s description: Andy thought he was just an average sixteen-year-old kid… But one day his world is completely turned upside down as he learns the unbelievable truth of his identity: he is the prince of a faraway kingdom called Filligrim in the Valley of the Misfits a magical place where pixies, elves, wizards, and dragons are just as likely to be inhabitants as humans. He was brought to this world following his birth the only way to keep him from being murdered by his evil malicious grandfather. Sounding more like a fairytale than reality, Andy at first thinks he must be dreaming. But then his aunt Gladdy reveals even more astonishing news: his mother, the Queen of the Misfits, is in trouble; she’s been captured by goblins, and it’s up to Andy to rescue her. Still in shock, he makes a decision that will forever alter life as he’s known it. He will return to Filligrim and, with the help of six heroic Misfits, will embark on a mission to save the kingdom from the clutches of evil. In Prince Andy and the Misfits: Shadow Man, Andy encounters one adventure after another as he works to uncover a traitor, rescue the queen from goblins, retrieve a stone of immense power, and solve the mystery surrounding the Shadow Man the sinister mastermind behind it all. And perhaps most importantly, he must ultimately discover if he has the heart to become a true prince.
Our thoughts:
Land of the free, home of the brave. Now nearly forgotten, these words from our national anthem once were as commonly used as any slang today. And thanks to our free market economy, we aren’t compelled to only read shallow tales mass-produced by a few publishing moguls. We now have many independent authors who are quite good. Which brings us to Prince Andy and the Misfits, another “good ol’ fashioned” story of chivalry, honor, and a dash of romance.
The story’s main character is a popular 16-year old, so this makes the book likeable and of interest to older readers, especially reluctant ones. However, the story line isn’t about high school and so its content is appropriate for all ages.
This doesn’t mean the action scenes are lame by any means. Early on, Elsfur beheads three knockers with his sword! However, in the style of the best of classic literature, our author goes beyond gore, distinguishing for readers a “just” battle. Authority and hierarchy are realistically portrayed, as is clear leadership. The characters experience life lessons that are easily applicable to our own real lives too. And after all, traditionally that was a purpose to good children’s literature :>)
