Marla was a cow who lived on a farm in the county with her friends, Frank the Pig, and Quackers and Pricilla who were ducks.
One day as Frank the Pig was taking a mud bath and Marla the cow was eating long grasses nearby, Pricilla and Quackers came running up quacking in excitement.
“Quack, Quack, Quack!” came the two excited ducks as they ran up to Frank the Pig and Marla.
“Oh my, what is it?” asked Marla in alarm. “What’s happened?”
“We found two animals!” shouted Pricilla. “We have to help them!”
“They are stuck under a fence and I think they may be hurt,” Quackers told Marla and Frank the Pig. “We must help them. Follow us.”
Marla helped Frank the Pig out of his large mud hole and they both followed the two ducks to a wire fence where two brown furry animals were struggling.
“Oh, my goodness! You poor animals,” cried Marla as they approached the two brown furry creatures. “Here, let me help you.” She picked up the fence and lifted it as high as she could so the two little creatures could hobble out from underneath it.
“Let me help, too,” said Frank the Pig as he scooped up the two little creatures that were having trouble walking.
“You two are hurt. We must take you back to the farm and clean you up,” insisted Marla as she looked at the two injured animals.
“No, we are okay,” spoke one of the animals. “Thank you kindly for all your assistance. but we should be fine.”
“No, I must insist,” replied Marla.
“That’s right,” said Frank the Pig. “You two are mighty hurt and need care.
“Well, if you insist,” said the animal as it held its hurt arm.
“Come, follow us,” said the two little ducks as they began quacking and walking towards the farm.
“Wait,” halted Frank the Pig. “These two little guys can’t walk!”
“Right, we must walk them,” spoke Marla. “Frank, I will put them both on your back and you can walk them back to the farm.”
“A few moments later, the farm animals were all walking toward the farm as Frank the Pig carried the two injured creatures.
“So, what are your names?” asked Frank the Pig to his fellow passengers.
“Oh, I am so sorry, in all the confusion we forgot to exchange names. My name is Sean and this is my best friend Doug. We are groundhogs. We were trying to get under the fence to find some food when we got stuck underneath. Thank goodness your two friends came along because we never would have gotten free.”
“That’s right,” replied Doug. “My arm got hurt when I got stuck under the fence and Sean’s neck is hurt, too!”
“Well, we are going to take you back and clean you both up and give you a good meal. You are welcome to stay for the night if you’d like. I have some lovely hay I can share and some cow feed, of course.”
“Us, too,” cried the others as they walked their two new friends home. “You are welcome to stay!”
“We have plenty of food,” said Frank the Pig as they arrived back at the farm and he put down the two brown animals.
“Thank you,” replied Sean, “but we really should be shoving off soon.”
“Yes, our families will be looking for us,” said Doug. “We have to work the fields tomorrow looking for food. I’m afraid we don’t eat what you all eat, but thanks for the offer.”
“Oh, yes,” replied Marla, “we understand. Maybe next time you’re near our farm you can stop in and we can all play!”
“Why, yes, that’s a wonderful idea. Next time we are near your farm we will definitely drop by,” said Doug as Marla wrapped his wound and Frank the Pig helped Sean with his.
A few hours later, after the groundhog’s wounds had been cl
