1. Career Development Workshop

The CLA McGill Student Chapter, in conjunction with CASLIS and the McGill School of Information Studies, is pleased to offer a full-day workshop on career development with Ulla de Stricker (http://www.destricker.com/en/ulladestricker.html).

When: Saturday, February 13, 2010 - 10:30 am to 4:30 pm (registration from 10:00 am)

Where: McGill University, Education Building (3700 McTavish), Room 627

Whether you're looking for your first professional position, still finishing your studies, or seeking something new, you are sure to come away from this workshop with useful tips, tricks, tools and techniques to help you advance your career in the information professions.

Agenda:
Résumés: Let’s tackle the monster! Come get the definitive word on what works, how to handle "tricky" information, and ways to make your résumé stand out visually, along with advice on making that essential impact in the first 3 seconds a reader looks at the document.

Where do you "fit"? Understanding your “career type” For each individual, some organizational environments are inherently more attractive than others. Understanding the different types of workplace cultures and your preferences and strengths in working within them can help you in focusing your job search and in presenting yourself to potential employers. Ulla discusses the elements of culture and personality that figure in a good organizational "fit".

Self-promotion without cringing: Gaining visibility through giving. Professional visibility is invaluable when it comes to pitching ourselves to employers. How can you work to earn a reputation that will precede you - without feeling awkward? Ulla describes how you can make yourself known in the profession through activities that focus on delivering value to others.

Positive politics: Building a healthy workplace. When a workplace “works”, it is no accident. It takes concerted effort - on the part of everyone - to create an atmosphere that has team members looking forward to Mondays! Ulla outlines straightforward ways in which new professionals can contribute to creating a supportive and productive environment.
