1. Penguin Active Readers: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Another batch of Penguin Active Readers. These were all really classic stories with new illustrations.

The scene illustrated on the cover of Benjamin Button went through several revisions as the new-born Benjamin is going to be bathed by the nurse. This is an ELT book, and sensitivities about, for instance, not showing bare feet for readers in some countries, tested my own and the artist’s patience. It reminded me of having to leave out The Three Little Pigs from a children’s story book because of other (perceived?) sensitivities.

Benjamin Button artist: Piers Sandford

And Then There Were None artist: Carlos Fonseca

The Scarlet Pimpernel artist: Carlo Molinari

How Green Was My Valley artist: Trystan Mitchell

Carmilla artist: David Belmonte

(This one was fun; there seemed to be a lot of illustrations involving fights).
