Boffin Boy is back with a new series of manga style graphic stories. Introducing his pet dog, Katt, who comes to the rescue on more than one occasion thanks to his own super powers.
6 great little graphic novels and 2 whacky workbooks aimed at the older but less able reader. Zombies, yetis, malevolent giant brains, and mad scientists… plus some villains from previous series, made for a lot of fun putting these books together.
Ransom wanted it done to a tight schedule, but the books had been well thought through and so there were no hiccups along the way.
As always, the cover designs were created from scavenging elements of the artwork from the insides pages and combined to make new artwork.

We returned to the work we did designing and commissioning illustration for the Snapdragons reading scheme because we referred to these fantastic little books recently while developing a design course for Oxford Brookes University and Save The Children. I realised we never had got around to putting them all on our website, so here goes…
There are 60 titles in the Snapdragon ORT series, and the books are designed for children to want to read themselves. For this reason they take a lot of their playful design approach from picture books rather than traditional reading schemes.
They can be found on OUP’s website here, or perhaps a little cheaper on Amazon here.

Each workbook covers 3 of the Boffin Boy titles and develops comprehension of the stories and encourages imaginative exploration of the themes and ideas in them.
The covers and pages all reuse the book artworks, extracting and recombining them to make new images. The exercises in the workbooks are also mediated by characters from the stories. So plenty of opportunities to make good use of the artwork throughout to keep the costs down.
The artist is Peter Richardson.

The second series of Boffin Boy brought the total number of books to 12. Peter’s Adobe Illustrator artwork is great to work with – we don’t have to think too hard about print resolution as we pull elements out of the page illustrations to combine them to make the cover designs, the incidental pictures in the prelims, as well as the workbooks. They work well with the page layouts in Adobe Indesign, I really don’t see how we could go back to Quark.
The second series includes my favourite story so far, Boffin Boy and the Ice Caves of Pluto.

The second of the Totally Brilliant Puzzle series; another 208 page marathon to produce. Written, designed and illustrated very much on-the-fly, which is a very different experience from getting a complete manuscript from the start. But Lisa‘s careful planning and amazing speed kept me sane. That, and the fact that at least the design features were pretty much fixed by the first book.
The two books are also combined into a Bumper puzzle book.

Brilliant fun to be involved with this project. These were a total reworking of older material to often completely different stories to bring about strictly phonically decode-able graphic stories for the Bug Club reading scheme.
They seem to be only available direct from the publisher. And in compliance with the publisher’s wishes I am just showing what is available on their website.

This book is the first book I got to work on with Firecrest, probably about 4 years ago, and it has only just been finished – as far as I am concerned. I don’t think it has been printed yet, because I haven’t had my copy, but it must be coming out soon. It is odd working on a book with such a long and torturous development, because you always wish that you had designed it differently. I have been able to keep the design pretty fresh, but my main problem over that time was just remembering how I had set up the working files, what application they were in and keeping them working with updated technology.
The thing I would change the most would be the cover, which I think was knocked up in a hurry for a book fair, and then stuck.
Anyway, 96 pages of fascinating facts about mammals, plenty of which I had never heard of.

Another batch of Penguin Active Readers. Some really classic stories here including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
The scene illustrated on the cover went through several revisions as the new-born Benjamin is going to be bathed by the nurse. This is an ELT book, and sensitivities about, for instance, not showing bare feet for readers in some countries, tested my own and the artist’s patience. It reminded me of having to leave out The Three Little Pigs from a children’s story book because of other (perceived?) sensitivities.

The 208 page bumper puzzle book. Stuffed with puzzles and activities. I seemed to spend most of my time cutting out Beccy’s pictures in Photoshop so that they could be reused in different parts of the book. I wrote some useful actions to speed up this process. Thankfully her strong drawing style can stand a lot of reduction/enlargement so the overall effect was very pleasing.

Working on this puzzle book right now. It’s really good fun, using the artist Beccy Blake again because I know I’ll she will do a great job. Hopefully we can keep the budget down with thoughtful reuse of her illustrations.
It will be sold straight into outlets like The Works. Funny how I used to suppose that if any of my books ended up somewhere like that they had reached the end of their shelf-life. No offence.
