27. First Day of School

Just eeked this one in ...

The students of Vapid Elementary School needed to be strong, both mentally and physically, in order not to simply fade away into nothingness.

(I must admit, I created this one with double duty in mind - WaWe's First Day of School and IF's Strong.)

29. Shameless Self-Promotion

The ABC Children's Book Competition for 2009 will be here soon. It's a great place to read the stories of up and coming author/illustrator teams.

There are twelve finalists this year (including yours truly: hence the shameless self-promotion). The author/illustrator team with the most online votes will receive a royalty-based publishing contract for their winning entry.

You may go to the ABC Book Competition website to vote, once daily, beginning September 20 -October 4th. The address is http://www.abcbookcompetition.org/5th_comp/5th_index.html

My entry (along with children's author Summer K Hall), is "Bella Upside Down."

We'd be ever so grateful if you could cast your vote our way. Oh, and please feel free to spread the word on your blogs, on FB, or Twitter. We can use all the word of mouth possible. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

33. Vacation Woes

Percy was Grassafield Zoo's most famous Cinnamon Bear. He came to the zoo when he was a cub, and he'd been there for well over ten years now. And for well over ten years now, he ate fish and berries each and every day. Percy was tired of eating fish, and berries. As a matter of fact, he was tired of watching people, watch him. He wanted to get out. He wanted go for a stroll and say "hi" to the neighbors he so very rarely saw. A "Good Morning Ma'am" to Barbara Giraffe, or "Top of the Morning to you Sir" to Nigel Hippo, both of whom had made him feel so welcome that first day when he was brought to the zoo.

So, when poor unsuspecting Shakia walked by with her "oh so yummy" cotton candy, and bright green balloon, Percy decided this was the time to make his move. With no zoo keepers in sight, he nimbly climbed over the wall, snatched her balloon , and started eating her cotton candy. Percy didn't have very good manners. Never did. In fact, there were a lot of things that Percy needed to learn about life on the outside.

We're getting ready to go on vacation and one of our stops is the National Zoo. I sure hope that we don't encounter a real live Percy snatching balloons and cotton candy from our hands! I'll be sure to say hi to Barabara and Nigel when we see them!

39. Exploring 2

And the second one is exploring ... well... breasts. There is something so funny about stuffing your shirt full of fruit, socks, pencils, etc. to get a glimpse of what you might look like as a grown-up. It's sort of like a pubescent Magic 8 ball.... without the ball... ok so maybe it's not really like that at all, but I like Magic 8 balls, so there.

I'll paint both of these later tonight and repost.

40. Exploring

I know this week's prompt is Father's Day, but I've been crazy busy the past few weeks with end of school activities that I feel like I can't catch up, so I'm cheating, and just fast forwarding to next week's prompt (I hope you don't mind): exploring. I've got two illos for this one. I felt inspired.

The first is .... belly buttons. Belly Buttons always seem to fascinate children - from toddlers exploring their bodies, to elementary school kids checking to see if they are an innie or an outie (and sometimes even showing off their bb lint - gross!)

41. Sticky Sketch

I doodled up two ideas for "sticky" - these are really rough; hopefully, I'll be able to refine them a bit this week . :)

42. Field Day

I know I missed the deadline for Field Day, but I had the best intentions of doing it, so I'm plugging away despite that minor detail. :) I'm still working on adding the three-legged race in the upper right. I also want to add some funnier elements, but haven't figured out what exactly. It'll come to me... This is my favorite stage of the illustration process!

43. Frolicking Fairy

You would think I would jump at the chance to do fairies since everyday I play "fairies" with my youngest; however, I just couldn't help envisioning a little tomboy "fairy" frolicking (or tormenting) creatures small and tall.

I'm pretty happy with my little fairy, but the wet cat left me a bit frustrated. Anyone have any tips for creating the illusion of a wet cat? I haven't worked on any illo for the past three weeks, so, I'm working out the kinks. Any suggestions are welcome!

44. Rainy Day Sketches

I've worked up these two sketches for this week's prompt. Do the characters look consistent? Overall, how does it look to you? Anything off? I'd like to do a good job on these so I can use them in my portfolio, so any feedback would really be appreciated! :)

45. Girly with Color

Here is my version with color. I'm still not wicked happy about the color. I think there's too much yellow. I probably should have made the boy's uniform blue, but it's late, and I'm tired, so I'm posting what I have.

46. Girly

I started working on an illustration for Girly. I applied the color, but it turned out, uh, ... not so good. So, I'm posting the inked version. I'll redo it, and post it in color later. It's amazing how a little bad color, can destroy an illustration. Sigh.

47. Play

Hi all, sorry I've been incommunicato lately. We were on vacation, and I've been playing catch up. I think I'm caught up. The prompt for WW this week is play, and on IF it's intricate, so I've tried to kill two birds with one stone. We often encounter this scenario in our house, usually with legos. One daughter meticulously finishes up her giant tower, only to have the dog, or her sister come pouncing on in, and ... Ka-Blam!

48. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

Um, yeah, I'm just a little excited....

Thanks so much for awarding me with the January 09 Spotted Bunny award! I'm so humbled by it because the illustrators in this group are so amazingly talented. I really enjoy participating each week, and I love the monthly challenges .... not only is it a great creative release for me, it has been such a great way to add new portfolio pieces, and of course to make new friends!

Thank you Monica for nominating me, and thanks Linda for inviting me to join the group in the first place! :)

Have a great day everyone... I know I will!

49. Class Picture Day

I just realized that I never actually posted the final piece. So, here it is... I'm pretty happy with it. In fact, I used it for my last postcard mailing. (I also included the spot I used on the back).

So, thanks for the great idea Lyon!

50. Hot Cocoa

Miss Cocoa was the type of dog that ran in all the right circles, and those circles provided her with her very favorite drink whenever she and her owner were out and about ... Hot Cocoa.
