To offer you a quick look at the greeting card designs that were delivered just yesterday (woohoo!), I’m posting a few pages from my catalog, so you can see the kind of stuff I’ve been up to! I’m currently working on a new design for this site, complete with an online store, so soon you will be able to see all the designs in living color! Click the images below to see them larger. Note: the colors won’t be quite as neon in print. Enjoy!

This Illustration Friday topic had me thinking of using an image from a project I worked on last Christmas: a humorous wedding card depicting a newlywed couple opening gifts. The above isĀ a modified version of one of the roughs. I can’t exactly post the final art as the card was for a client and [...]

My submission for Illustration Friday's "Drifting" is one of my Marisol Hidden Treasure greeting cards. It has a gift certificate inviting the recipient to dinner. So after you drift, you have dinner, how perfect.

Back in March I worked on a “Missing You” greeting card for RSVP/Ronnie Sellers. A box of samples came in the mail late last week and I was pleased as to how nice the card looked, with the vibrant colors, the white border (which I hadn’t anticipated, as I created the card for a bleed), [...]

My submission for Illustration Friday's "unfold" theme is a diecut valgal card that celebrates love. The message is clear but the card is a little unique in the design. I love making cuts and folds, it makes the card a bit more special. I have included a few views here: 1.the original illustration and a copy of the card 2. closeups of the image 3. card folds and unfold.copyright 2004 Valerie Walsh

This is a greeting card I created for RSVP cards last year. It's in a tighter, more rendered style than I've been working in lately, but I like working both ways. The image is digital, done in Painter.

Sweet little Miss HollyBerry has a clandestine meeting with Mr. Mistletoe. Where is he? It"s so cold, Brrrrrr!!! My submission for Illustration Friday's "clandestine" is an illustration I did for a Holiday card this year and a submission for a Holiday contest on Youtube. It didn't make it to the contest but they loved my work so much they requested a bunch of my older images :) copyright 2008 Valerie Walsh

Merry Christmas to everyone!!!

Flowers or a bouquet can repair or help to say "I'm sorry". My submission for Illustration Friday's "repair" theme is a greeting card from my Applesaucey Kids line.

I'm currently taking a greeting card/licensing class at The School of Visual Arts this semester. Many people are asking why someone like me need to take a class like this. The main reason is that I need deadlines, and it seems that if I don't have them, I don't get anything done. I've been talking about venturing out beyond children's books for a long time but can't get my butt into gear.
Don't get me wrong. I have alot more goals I need to accomplish in the world of children's books (like writing my own book, having a series, taking over the world with chickens, etc.) but there are so much more beyond, like licensing and even "grown up" editorial work. If I don't get those things cooking, it won't magically happen over night.
On another note, I feel like I've been writing alot of "sorry for the late reply" emails. I've been very absent-minded lately, so I apologize to anyone who has emailed or commented here and I haven't replied. Please know I always appreciate them. Cluck cluck!
I finally made this blank greeting card out of the illustration I did from The Wish Trees giveaway post. I don't have any real personal stationary to use for everyday so this will be very handy.
You know how when you are an artist, and your friends and family expect that everything you give them must be handmade or with your art on them, especially greeting cards? Hey, sometimes I don't have time and have to pick up a Hallmark card! My mom seems to be disappointed when that happens though.
I've also put some of them in my shop. Its been seriously neglected but I hope to be back into it soon.

Here is a greeting card I recently made for a friend and colleague. The size of the final card is about 8.5 x 8.5 or so.

My submission for Illustration Friday's "baby" is one of my Home Town greeting cards and it is a little storefront shop that displays wares for a new baby/babies. It is a die cut card and perfect for a baby shower gift for a new mommy. When you collect them all it makes a small town and a fun display.

My submission for Illustration Friday's "electricity" is from a greeting card that I made for Marisol. It has a gift certificate to "Come over to my house for holiday cheer" it was rejected for being to dark. Candlelight versus electricity is an easy choice for me because I am usually painting pretty detailed work so I need good light. I have 365 halogen lights in my studio and they are the best purchase I ever made. It is like daytime in my studio late at night. Here in Topanga several times a year somebody driving up Hwy. 27 hits a power pole and suddenly no electricity. I am super prepared for this situation, I have lots of candles, alternate light sources, batteries, a portable dvd player, a radio with cd player that runs on batteries, etc. We have a big-time disaster preparedness program for all residents having been faced with fires, floods and earthquakes, you can see them here and here.

My submision for Illustration Friday's "seed" is one of my Marisol greeting cards and the interior is a gift certificate that promises love and friendship.
Another attempt at going through my fabric stash: fabric collage on watercolor paper greeting card.
Oh how funny with all the comments on the coupon! Everyone is taking up on the free chicken leg offer, I better stock up :-) I think I will do a real promo with it. It will be fun to see who actually redeems the coupon.

Pardon me while I work, but help yourself to the garden out in back. That is how life is sometimes, to busy to enjoy the garden... My submission for Illustration Friday's "garden" is a greeting card for Marisol to be used for "Some help around the house". It was deemed to dark and was rejected but they had to pay me anyway.
