RACE AGAINST TIME

Despite strenuous training and conditioning, Murgatroid found it difficult to beat the clock.

The Illustration Friday theme for this week is “Time.” So, since it is 11:00 pm on Thursday, with only an hour  left to post… time is running out!

27. Post Holiday Doldrumoids

duldromoid5 450

We’ve always known of their existence, but for the first time ever, caught in mid listless, despondency, is what experts commonly refer to as the Post-holiday Doldrumoid…in the flesh……or rather, in the doodle.

No matter. It’s official. We have a Doldrumoid pandemic on our hands. They are here and we have got to deal with them.

Some effective methods for coping with these ubiquitous yet unwelcome creatures are as follows:

1. Ignore them. Doldrumoids have been known to eventually lose interest in their host and reluctantly disappear after a week or two.

2. Keep that crunchy Christmas tree up for another month, along with the exterior icicle lights and the inflatable snow globe on your lawn. Do this while ignoring the fact that the holidays are over. This method seems to keep the Doldrumoids at bay, but leaves the door wide open for Lackus Deselfrespectus spors to take hold.

There are no easy answers, but…

3. For those of us who need to get back to business… pronto, there are some drastic measures that can be implemented. Take tree and exterior lights down, box up Christmas decorations, shove said boxes up in garage rafters, eat salad, go to the gym and then actually make that deadline for your employer/client as opposed to staring blankly at the computer monitor (close mouth, wipe drool off chin, mind don’t get any on the keyboard.)

In the event none of the above methods prove effective, one can always hold on until February 14 when a virulent strain of Guiltus Cupidus overcomes the weakened Doldrumoids, offering minimal relief to some sufferers.

This has been an important public service announcement. You may now return to your regularly scheduled program. Thank you.

Another redraw and a repost from a few years ago. Thought it might be apropos.

28. So Long 2013. We hardly gnu ye!

happy gnu year 2014 450

This here fella is a redraw from a couple of years ago… or a re-gnu-ed drawing, if you will. He seemed eager to return and join in the last party of 2013. So I threw him a bone.

Along with 2013 ending, so too concludes HoHoDooDa 2013! A hearty thanks to all of you talented participants for the camaraderie, encouragement and fantastic art you have put forth this December. It’s not easy to commit to a sketch a day at any time of the year, but around the holidays… hoooooo boy! What an inspiration!

A big thanks also to everyone who followed along and cheered us on. You can’t know how helpful and incredibly uplifting that is!

All y’all really made this holiday season heartwarmingly special! May 2014 bring each and every one of you all the love, health, prosperity and creative inspiration there is to be brought!

Happy Happy Happy New (and Gnu) Year to everyone!!!

P.S. Why not take one more peek at all the cool HoHoDooDaers right here before dipping into the cheese ball and pouring that celebratory glass of bubbly!

31. HoHoDooDa 2013 Day 14

card-shark450-1

Didn’t get a doodle done today because I was finishing up my holiday cards. (Yeah, it’s tradition to be this late, thank you very much!)

So although it’s a bit of a cheat I decided to repost this from a couple of years ago. Thought it might be appropriate.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I love holiday cards. I love getting them, but most of all I like making them.

At least it starts out that way.

There’s the initial concept. Fun!

Sketching it up. Fun!

Drawing, painting, tweaking. Fun! Fun! Fun!

But then, there is the whole standing in line at the post office because I absolutely must have those special snowman stamps.

Followed by an attempt at addressing the cards and the subsequent admitting to people that I wrote their address on a scrap piece of paper last year and my cat batted it under the couch and apparently a spider drug it away to it’s nest, so could you pleeeeeeease give me your address for the fifteenth time… and I promise I’ll key it safely into my iPhone this time!

Couple that with the fact that I waited until pretty much the last minute, even though I promised last year and the year before that and the year… ok, the past ten years that I would start in August.

Before you know it, I’ve got a holiday card meltdown on my hands.

Does any of this sound familiar? Am I alone with this?

Anywho, fun? Not so much.

But despite the griping and moaning, after all is said and done, the truth is, it’s just not Christmas until I’ve sent off all my cards and, of course, I receive that very first card in the mail, be it Christmas, Hanukkah or Festivus (I’m still waiting for my first Kwanza card.)

I just love holiday cards!

It’s tradition! Every bit of it, from fun to meltdown and I hope it never goes away!

Now get yer elfin shoes over here to see what the other doodlers have in store for you!

It’s December y’all!

Ok then (rubbing hands together), time to put Thanksgiving behind us and focus on the holiday shenanigans still ahead, along with… drumroll please… HoHoDooDa 2013!

Looks like we have a few masochists joining us this year. Below are the names and links of said participants (at least any who have left their name and link to where they are posting their doodles, in the comments here.) If I’ve missed anyone or your link is not working or any other proof of my heinous lack of organizational skills, please leet me know and I’ll do my best to fix it.

So let’s kick the turkeys out of our way, roll up our sleeves and get doodling!

40. A slew of dining room dinner doodles!

As readers of the blog know, the Willems family (and guests) spend our dinners doodling on the paper table cloth that we use for our meals. These drawings are real doodles, nothing pre-thought out.  Just fun and letting loose. They're a joy to do and to look at after. Here are some recent doodles: My wife is into abstractions, but this time she framed it. Shapes Love the hair my

43. The Master List!

IMAG1938

Hooray for The Master List! There is nothing like getting all your thoughts on paper…. and yes, I said paper!  Sitting right in front of me where I can doodle on it, cross it off, highlight it etc. I have tried the electronic list making but nothing quite satisfies this artist.

All my ideas are added to my The Master List.  For a creative person, this list is quite freeing!  I can stop trying to shuffle all of this around in my head.  Yes, these items and more have been yelling at me from my head!  ha!  Everything was fighting for recognition… saying things like,  “Me first!”,  “NO! Me first!”

Now I can decide who is first!  Does this sound a little scary to you?  Leslie is hearing things?  I assure you, this is the world of many of us who are visual thinkers!  The world speaks to us! Being the cartoonist that I am, I can actually imagine people as cartoons.  Many of my Facebook friends can attest to that fact.  It’s quite fun!

Okay,  Now to the next step.  Working at crossing off all these things on the list!  I will keep you posted.

So what do you have on your list?

45. Recent Dining Room Dinner Doodles:

Here is another sampling of dining room dinner doodles from the past month or so. As you can see, each member of the Willems' clan is doing their own thing (my daughter, faces; my wife, abstracts; myself, I have no clue) and having a great time doing it! 2 parallel lines will never meet... Love this one!

46. Sausage Fest 2013!

It has been a tradition at Knuffle Manor (and before that Brooklyn's Pigeon's Nest) to throw a big party once a year to celebrate the efforts of those "behind the scenes" who insure that my books, animated films, and other projects get out into the world looking a good as possible. Still before the storm I am the first to admit that when it comes to my work, I need a lot of help.

48. Doodles on the train

So yes, last weekend I was off on the train for a couple of hours, as promised I was drawing all the way. However due to the constraints of reserved seat allocation and tightly tiered seat layouts, many Eastern region trains don't offer themselves easily to sketch the other passengers. (That is a grumble, yes!) On the outward journey this is as much as I was able to see:

On the return I virtually had the carriage to myself, so again, no sketching from life. However, at times like these the pen has other invisible realms to explore ......

50. Book Review: My Beastly book of Tangled Tinsel

I have an almost 4yo little craft monster in my house. He's also obsessed with Christmas. So we turn to OwlKids My Beastly book of Tangled Tinsel for creative, chaotic, fun. It's certainly geared at slightly older kids, but there is still plenty for him (and I) to do. I also plan on pulling this out for visiting cousins.
As an artist, it was really interesting to see him try and draw the expressions on the faces. I highly recommend picking up this book. The illustrations by Christine Roussey are so fun and creative. Visit her website for more of her amazing work.
