27. Picture book project - concept

Still working out colours and technique, so here's another simple composition. The colours are probably getting close to what I want, but the technique I'm not so sure yet. I don't want it overly fussy looking, but am definitely still struggling to control the medium. More to follow.

28. Picture book project

Some good news to report, I have teamed up with published (and award winning) author Jennifer Poulter who has taken my initial concept art and done a truly brilliant job of working them into a story for picture book form. Above you can see some new concept art created since receiving the finished first draft of the manuscript. At this stage I'm still trying to establish the look, so nothing here is final. If you missed the earlier concept art I posted here/here & here, it was all digitally painted. I'd like to reinterpret the world created thus far in watercolour if I can manage to get to grips with this medium. I still have a ways to go on this front.

29.

Three weeks ago I was lucky enough to find myself at the CTN Expo taking in the forum discussions, catching up with friends, and toting my wares around to the studios. I was not able to show the recent film work because the movies have not yet been made or released but I had enough new stuff that it was time to freshen up my book. Thus began the task of designing a new portfolio. There are plenty of places on the web with great advice about putting together your book, most notably Escape from Illustration Island, and most are well worth the time it takes to read them even for someone that has been showing work for more than twenty years. Much of the advice is standard so I will not go into the details but will share a few observations that I had in this most recent go-round.

First off it was far more difficult than I remembered so your first stop should be to check your calendar. The day that you read about a conference like CTN or Siggraph that you may want to attend, you need to build time into your production schedule. Treat it like a job because your next one may depend upon it. Build in time for going through your images, designing the thing, editing, feedback, more editing, and finally printing and shipping. I used Blurb and was very happy once again with the results though I would recommend spending the extra money for the paper upgrade.
OK, so you have picked some recent images of work that you like. These are pieces that you enjoyed making and show the type work that you would like to get more of. I put together a contact sheet like this:
The portfolio that preceded this version, and there have been many, looked wonderful but as a friend of mine pointed out it was a bit of an embarrassment of riches. It was well received but clocked in at a hefty 34 pages. Even people that loved my work were stuffed by page 20.

I was a prime candidate for a radical intervention on Portfolios Biggest Losers. If you have a copy, I am sure that it looks very nice on your coffee table but my goal this time around was to make something a bit more user friendly. How? Simple. Edit until it hurts. I am good at critiquing, in fact I used to get paid to crit and edit while teaching at RISD but when it comes to your own book, we all need a fresh eye. So I sent it off to my friend Buck Lewis. I received something like this back.

31. Character design

Here is some concept art for the main character of the picture book I've been working (and posting) on. The first image is an experiment with new ways to render digitally. The second image is more of an exploration of personality. As the personality crystallizes I expect to develop a more consistent way of drawing and constructing this fellow.

32. "Day Trip"

Number 3 in the series.

I'm thinking that as I explore this character's world a loose narrative will unfold. Eventually, I envisage possibly collating the series into a picture book without words - a purely visual story. One example of this picture only format is Gon, the Japanese manga about a dinosaur.

I love this Tumblr of creature concept art: Creature Journal. I had to do some Internet digging to discover the artist’s name: Mark A. Facey.

Artists: put your names on your websites. Or do you not want to be contacted for work?

42. Alberto Mielgo

Alberto Mielgo is a Spanish illustrator living in London. He is a masterful painter who has an astonishing ability to create a kind of reductive literal realism that appears almost photographic. Here’s a small section…

… of a much larger illustration Mielgo created for an advertising client. On his blog he explains how he did six comprehensive roughs before this version of the image was settled on… and then, after execution, the project died!

Mielgo hints at his work on many major film and video game productions… but unfortunately, because of corporate secrecy, he is often unable to share much of that work with us. He had to take down an example of his contribution to Beatles Rockband, but was allowed to show a sketch from a Dorian Grey film project.

Alberto has also done some comics projects. This is a page from a story he drew for Image’s Popgun #3.

Illustration, concept art, comics… *whew!* … and somehow Mielgo finds the time to do fine art gallery painting as well!

44. Concept Artist, Rodolfo Damaggio

One of the most impressive illustrators working in film production today is Rodolfo Damaggio.

Damaggio worked as a comic book artist for DC in the 1990’s before moving on to do concept art and storyboards for such summer blockbusters as MI3, Lemony Snicket’s SoUE, Hidalgo, Indiana Jones 4, and Fantastic Four “Rise of the Silver Surfer”, among many others.  Pouring through Damaggio’s website will leave you feeling a little overwhelmed by his stunning sense of cinematic perspective – not to mention his rock-solid drawing and painting skills.  This guy is good.

46. What I have for breakfast, my itunes shuffle, my process, and lots of sketches and art!

I had the pleasure of being interviewd by Jules at Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast. If you are not familiar with her blog you should be. Jules has archived interviews with some of the most amazing authors and illustrators working in the children's book industry. How about knowing more about Mo Willems, Jane Yolen, Ed Young, Harry Bliss, Giselle Potter, or Dave McKlean

The interviews are just long enough that you get a real sense of the artists but not so long that you feel like you are reading every entry on their face book page. The insights shared through a very thoughtful q/a are enlightening and often hilarious.
The posts are choc full of nicely sized images in a very clean, well organized format.  So if you want to know more about the people that created the books that you love, or discover a new favorite, a visit to her blog is time well spent. http://blaine.org/sevenimpossiblethings/

49. Jon Klassen

How the heck did I miss this guy's work? Jon Klassen is amazing, I first saw his work a couple of weeks ago and I feel like I've been run over by an art steam train.Beautiful, lyrical art balancing design, narrative and expressiveness. I really love this guy's work. I'm so glad he's getting attention for his Coraline design work.
