28. Birthday Giveaway!

In honor of my birthday, I've decided to give a present instead of to receive one. I need a little Karma pick my up. Besides, I'm getting plenty of presents already.

Details:
I'm giving away one 8x10 print of my latest painting; The Blue Butterfly. It represents a lot of what I'm trying to do these days (grow, change, be more light hearted, let go, hope). It is printed with archival inks on presentation card stock and mounted in an 11x14 soft white matt, sealed in a cellophane sleeve.

To enter:
Please leave a comment in this post.

For additional: entries, please tweet this post and let me know you did so in your comment.

I will randomly draw one winner on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Good luck!

This print is also available in my shop, so if you don't win, you can still get it.

29. New Painting

This is a painting I created for the church festival's silent auction. I've never donated a painting before. I hope it brings in a lot of money. I chose a butterfly theme because it symbolizes so many things: rebirth, change, beauty, new life, hope. I like that I started this painting with only a vague plan. It's so much fun to create on the fly. That doesn't work so well with color pencil.

I'll be putting this in my shop later this week.

31. What is color

JDMbfly711091

What color is my cat ?

What color is the butterfly ?

What color is the snow ?

Orange, gray, yellow, white ?

I say no, it’s no I say !

They are the color of the universe, strands of thread sewn in a tapestry, woven like a weaver with a masters hands .

The color of their weaving we may never truly understand but in the instant of our leaving.

32. Butterfly on Grass

My new little friend. I have so many in my flower garden right now because of the milkweeds Ryan planted last year. Nature is so amazing!

This one is all paper. My fingers kinda hurt a bit after all the cutting. Lots and lots of cutting!

33. Animal Wednesday: White Tiger Magic

This is a collage I did some time ago that I had forgotten about until an Etsy buyer ordered this card today. Here's what I looked up about white tigers when I used one in a painting I did for my nephew.

Tiger medicine represents passion/sensuality, silent solitary power, heightened sense of touch, and valor.

We could all use a little tiger magic in our lives now and then.

Happy Animal Wednesday my friends!

34. The BugCatchers

Now that I am happy with this version there is a point where I started...
and I still like this one. It has a simplicity that is perfect for some types of stories. But it evolved a bit to this one next....
and this one is fun too, but it needed something and I also wanted to get a closer view of the children... so that is the first image on the top.

35. Autumn Migration

We must be in the flight path of the monarch migrations to Mexico here in Austin because I have seen so many of them over the last few weeks! A couple weeks ago we hiked Commons Ford park which is west of the city and everywhere I looked I'd spot a monarch. They seemed especially fond of one particular type of flower which were quite plentiful in the park. I've seen a a good number of the other 'big butterflies' around too, swallowtails and such. Monarchs are a real childhood favorite of mine!

Every so often I discover that my husband has, unbeknownst to me, lent his hand to my work. Sometimes his little additions go unnoticed for days or weeks until I've come back to the drawing for reworking or reference. I always get a good laugh from these unexpected contributions:
And so I continue to labor under his corrupting influence... Read the rest of this post

38. Socialite

Are you a social light, bright in flight,  socialite who plays all night, social-lite drinking malted milk by your self with no friends in sight?

Do not worry or be in a hurry, try not to scurry, take your time and do not be blurry so you may have to say your sorry.

It’s only nature to want some friends but that depends for sometimes you have to make amends before the email sends.

And counting digits 5 at most should tell the host five friends are best if one is a ghost who likes burnt toast.

So if you flutter by like some butterfly to grace the sky but see no others upon your flight you had better try to shed more light.

PS … have you ever noticed that only when the light is off do you see your warped reflection in it?

39. Garden Stroll: Illustration Friday

A soft breeze fills Claires skirt with thick puffs of pink
The smell of lavendar tickles her nose
Butterflies pause as Frogs dance on the rich earth
Green leaves and stone tiles absorb the warm of the sun.
The sweet taste of vanilla couldn't be better appreciated
than on a summer garden stroll.

*made just for illustration friday!

40. Teacher Blogs

I'm a little irritated with Visual Thesaurus. I said their Blog Du Jour site was one of my five non-kid-lit blogs and then they went and let me down. Their newest set of blogs du jour are titled Teacher Talk. I checked them out, and the title should be High School Teacher Talk.

Where are the elementary school teacher blogs?

I've looked at education blogs before and I went looking again for awhile this morning, but mostly what I find are secondary educator blogs, or blogs about technology in the classroom.

However, I did find Teacher Tube:

About Us

After beta testing for almost two months, TeacherTube officially launched on March 6, 2007. Our goal is to provide an online community for sharing instructional videos. We seek to fill a need for a more educationally focused, safe venue for teachers, schools, and home learners. It is a site to provide anytime, anywhere professional development with teachers teaching teachers. As well, it is a site where teachers can post videos designed for students to view in order to learn a concept or skill.
Seems like a BRILLIANT idea. I can't wait to spend some time exploring and viewing. One more for my spring break To Do list.
