26. Teaser Tuesday-Animal Magnetism, Knight’s Curse, and The Magicians

I’m still afflicted by this strange case of ADD, which isn’t allowing me to concentrate on any one book for long.  I think it’s because I have so many books that look awesome, and I want to get to them all – at the same time!  I finished a slew of titles on Saturday, and then dove right back into a bunch more, so here are teasers from them.

Animal Magnetism by Jill Shalvis is a book I picked up at the “I Lost My Mind At Borders” trip.  I love the puppy’s expression, and knew that cute little face wouldn’t steer me wrong.  This is a fun read, and I love all of the animals.

The lamb-Lulu, he presumed-stepped forward and tried to shove her face into his crotch, but duly warned by Dell, Brady backed up.

“Don’t be afraid. She’s sweet.”

At Lilah’s words, Lulu appeared to smile, pulling back her lips to show her teeth, which didn’t look sweet to Brady.

I really didn’t mean to start reading Knight’s Curse by Karen Duvall right at this moment, but after zipping through the first chapter, I found myself going back to the book again and again.  It’s an urban fantasy with a tough as nails protagonist who is in a very unfortunate set of circumstances.

He looked thoughtful for a few seconds before saying, “Kill him.”

Surprise raised my voice an octave. “Kill Shui?”

The gargoyle growled, topping it off with a hiss.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman is being bill as a Harry Potter for adults, so of course I had to check that out.  I honestly don’t see many similarities so far, but I am still in the middle of the set up for the story.

It felt like his lungs had been crumpled up and then incinerated. He coughed for five solid minutes without stopping. Eliot laughed so hard he had to sit down. Quentin’s face was slick with tears.  He forced himself to take another drag and threw up into a hedge.

Here is a link to a fan video for the books – If you have time, click and give it a watch.  Then click over to Space Unicorn for more lol’s.

"Sasha chewed at the bottom of her lip as if searching for what to say next. "Everyone saw you at the party last night."
Pretty juicy huh?

33. Teaser Tuesday 6

Alright guys it's time for our sixth Teaser Tuesday, I love doing these because you get a sneak peak at the book your reading and others too! If you want to join in just post two teaser sentences of whatever book your reading and post them :) Teaser Tuesday is hosted by the wonderful MizB from Should Be Reading so if you want to blog post link back to her!

My teaser is from Rumors by Anna Godbersen:

"Oh," Diana Holland said. She appeared stricken -- Lina noticed that even as her own breath shortened and she began to realize, with no small amount of agitation that one mistake had piled on another.

Make sure you comment below with links to your teasers as I would love to add more books to my TBR pile.

Until next time,
Shelbie

34. Teaser Tuesday: 10.19.10

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme (that I unfortunately forget to participate in weekly), hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  5. Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
I know, my participation Teaser Tuesday is sporadic. The problem is that usually by the time I remember it after finding something I want to share, it's already Wednesday. But never fear! Today, I'm sharing something from Richard Peck's new book Three Quarters Dead:

Anyway, I could feel Tanya from here, the tug of Tanya. The old woman has said, "Run for your life." And, really, wasn't I? What kind of life did I have without them?
Spooky, huh? This is turning out to be a great read for Halloween time.

Note: This quote is from an ARC copy, and may be different in the final print version.

Hey guys, we've got two teasers this week because both Shelbie and I are posting teasers! Anyways... we can't remember how many of these we've done... so we're just going to say this is number five.
Shelbie's Teaser: This teaser is from Radiance by Alyson Noel,

"She's back," I whispered, knowing it to be true. "They're all back together again."
Sounds interesting, I have no idea what happens to be going on... but apperently everyone is back together.

Amanda's Teaser: Okay, this teaser is from The Scorch Trials by James Dashner.

"Why didn't you just whack me out in the alley?" Thomas asked.

Hmmm sounds very interesting. Now I can't wait to get to that page!

Anyways, be sure to comment and post your own teaser!

xoxo and love always,
Shelbie and Amanda

36. Teaser Tuesday – What Would You Do During A Zombie Attack?

What would you do during a zombie attack? Run? Fight back? How about if you were stuck in the middle of a store like The Gap? Here’s a short teaser from my WIP:

The manager put a key into a slot in the wall and turned it. A gate rolled down in front of the door, locking us in with a handful of people that stood between racks of clothing that always looked better in commercials and on people other than me.

“I’ll be over there,” said Taylor, pointing to a sales rack.

“How can she shop during the zombie apocalypse?” asked Dylan.

“Don’t you know that khaki pants are your first line of defense against the undead?” asked Lucas. “That’s what the guys wore in Zombie Apocalypse Now.”

“Right,” I said, trying not to laugh. “Don’t you remember what happened to them at the end of the movie?”

“Okay,” said Lucas, “scratch the khaki’s then.”

So, what would you do? I think I might go shopping too (after thinking up an escape plan).

37. Teaser Tuesday – Cartwheels (Zombie WIP)

I thought it would be fun to post another teaser from the zombie novel I’m working on. In this scene, Sheila and Janelle are trying to convince Kira to try out for cheerleading, even though she doesn’t want to.

” … Besides, I can’t even do a cartwheel.”

“That is so sad,” says Janelle.

She and Sheila shake their heads in sympathy, as if it’s a tragedy that I don’t know how to do a cartwheel, which it’s not.

Can you do a cartwheel? I used to be able to do a wobbly one, but I was never very good at it.

38. Teaser Tuesday – Zombie WIP

Kira’s observation about her cat and her roommate Sheila:

Technically we weren’t supposed to have pets, but there was no way I was going to leave Kitty-Kitty behind to fend for herself. Luckily, Sheila and Kitty-Kitty got along, probably because they had the same personality – stubborn.

39. Teaser Tuesday – NaNo novel excerpt

My NaNoWriMo novel suddenly changed from third to first person (I usually write in first, so not a shock). I also deleted one of the characters. Since NaNoWriMo is all about forging ahead and upping your word count, I decided not to go back and fix/change things. Instead, I’m just jumped in with the tense shift and wrote this bit to explain the character’s absence:

“It feels like we’re missing something, or someone.” said Lexa. “Didn’t we have another friend before?”

“Before what?” I asked.

“Before this. Weren’t there three of us last night?” asked Lexa.

“Huh,” I said. “That sounds vaguely familiar. I think you might be right. Didn’t her name start with an I or something?”

“Yeah, I think you’re right.”

Lexa and I stared at each other for a while, trying to figure out who our missing mystery friend was. If we had been on a cartoon, they would have gone to a close up of our faces, then shown what was going on inside our heads. Tiny little hamsters running on wheels, around and around and around and never coming up with the answer to our question.

“I wonder what happened to her,” I said.

“Who?” asked Lexa.

“The girl we used to be friends with, the one whose name started with an I.”

“Good question. Maybe we’ll never know.”

Maybe plowing forward like this would be a good idea when not doing NaNo too. I love to go back and edit/re-edit so much that it’s hard to keep going sometimes. Plus this scene cracked my evil inner editor up so that he didn’t even mess with me. Anything that does that is worth trying again.

I've been slacking on these lately, but I actually have time today. Gasp! Shock! And other exclamations of surprise!

Anyway, here's my teaser for this week from Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters:

"I am persuaded that Mrs. Smith suspects his regard for Marianne, disapproves of it, and on that account is eager to get him away. Or, alternatively, he has in his quest for treasure disturbed the burial site of a pirate captain, and incurred the wrath of the pirate captain's ghost, who has thusly cursed him to wander the seven seas until fate should claim him. It's one of those two."

I haven't done one of these in awhile, but I actually have time this week! My teaser is from The Season by Sarah MacLean:

"The duchess was not in the mood to hear her daughter's feeble explanations. 'No buts, young lady. March up to your chamber, apologize to Eliza for her having to bother with you at this hour of the day, and Remove. That. Dress."

Who else has heard their mother speak in that tone? You know the one. Where. Every. Word. Is. It's. Own. Sentence. Oooh. I shiver just thinking about it.

If you are intrigued, you can check out more about The Season at Amazon.com:

Okay, I'll bite. This sounds like fun. So here's my teaser this week. It's from Backtracked by Pedro De Alcantara

From page 5 of the hardcover edition (I just barely started it):

"Soon it'd be five years since the towers went down, and Jimmy with them. Jimmy the All-American, Jimmy the Hero, Jimmy the Saint. Dying in your prime is a good career move. Nobody remembers your defects."

Okay, so that's more than two sentences. But I couldn't just stop in the middle of the thought. If you've been intrigued, follow the Amazon link below to find out more about Backtracked. And look for a review (someday) soon. I do have to finish the book first, after all!
