26. Pirate and Princess

This was the cover to a Halloween board book I did a while back but it's still one of my favorites!

27. Little Witch for Halloween!

21-Little-Witch

I was recently very reliably informed that now is a good time to start designing for Halloween. Seriously. So when the time came to look for a good reason to procrastinate (though I don't necessarily need much of a reason at all) from completing items on my to-do list, I decided to explore Corel Painter further and try an illustration on the computer from scratch, i.e. without preparatory paper sketches to scan in ... and this was the result.

I'm not sure of where she came from, this little witch but she does look rather like she's enjoying herself. It's my first ever completely digital illustration and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I may do more soon ... Cheers!

28. Pumpkins, sick kid, & a garden

I've been working on a whole host of pumpkins & Jack-o-Lanterns. Let's just pretend they're Easter Bunnies, ok? They're part of a new collection I'm working on.

One of the reasons I've been a stay at home mom is shown here. When you're sick, you just want to be home with Mom, right? Mom and the dog, of course. My youngest was sick all of last week. The week before Spring Break. I had a lot of work to do, so we brought his big bean bag chair into my studio along with the quilt Gramma made. He was so cozy and I could work. The dog also takes his job seriously. He spent tireless hours comforting his boy.

This unattractive monstrosity is doing a good job of holding the pool net, but it's seen better days. I can only work on small parts of the garden as I go along. This will stay like this for now, but I'm dreaming of a variety of color, texture, and height here someday. I'm just not a formal garden kind of person. In other gardening news, I'm having a row of roses removed to make room for an in ground vegetable garden. I can hardly wait! It all starts this Friday. My Nikon lens is in the shop, so I'll try to dig up a camera to show you.

31. Taking Shelter

Continuing my string of autumn-themed paintings, here is yet another:

This illustration is another private commission and installment in the "Little Lost Squirrels" story. Here they are mid-journey taking shelter from the storm. We carried a couple details from previous "Lost Squirrels" illustrations over into this illustration to hint at the continuity - the little green beetle has been observing the unfolding events through several paintings as has the watchful owl. I always think it's fun to find these kinds of extras details in artists' work - kind of like you're in on a little secret!

32. Happy Halloween!

Bradley outdid himself this year, with a very simple but spooky jack-o-lantern!
I think the secret was spending more time on the sketch phase. Then he whipped it up in no time! We're ready for the trick-or-treaters now.
Update: we have had hardly any trick-or treaters. I have been FORCED to eat a bunch of candy myself.

33. A Halloween Treat

When I read on Georgia’s blog that she was having an Autumn swap, I immediately went for it.  It’s been quite some time since I participated in a swap so I thought it would be lots of fun!  I wish I had taken photos of the package I had created for my recipient, Heather, (included recipe cards, a recipe, bat confetti I got in France, cookies, and a candle that “smelled” like October) but alas I dropped it off in the mail before I remembered to do so.

Georgia’s friend Chelsea got me in the swap and I was ever so thrilled to receive her package yesterday!  I haven’t had the best week (although certainly not the worst – not to worry!) and it was wonderful to get her generous gift in the mail.* The box contained so many fun and tasty things, including the wee stripe-y pumpkin you see above.  The caramel supply has dwindled, the recipes are saved for when cooler weather returns, the baking cups (below) and decor will be used probably this weekend.

Chelsea even gave me a little booklet of her beautiful autumnal photography!  Instead of trying to take a photo of it, you should check out her blog: Hearts & Scars.  Thank you again, Chelsea, you brightened  up my day!

And…Happy Halloween, everyone!

*I also found out yesterday that one of my dearest friends – and her newborn baby boy! – made it through the delivery,  both happy and healthy.

36. Illustration Friday — Racing

I just couldn't pass posting this illo again for this week's Illustration Friday theme. He's just right for it!

There's still time to get this Spidery Trick or Treat bag that I designed. I've ordered one for each of my kids and I'm so excited about it for two reasons: #1-Well, I designed it! and #2-This is a much better option to the plastic pumpkins or pillow cases we've used on previous Halloweens. You can buy your own here.

I've also made this beautiful fall print available in my Etsy shop

43. It's raining so it must be Fall!

Fall is my favorite season and pumpkins are my favorite thing to paint. I just love pumpkins! This is a painting I made many years ago and it has been hanging in my house ever since. I've just listed a print of it in my Etsy shop. It's the perfect image of Fall!

FYI: I'm so excited that it's raining. Don't remind me that part of my roof isn't covered. I'm sure it'll be ok, right?

This is the October colouring page for my community newsletter. It's FREE for parents and teachers to print, copy and share - just please email me for a higher resolution (otherwise it's going to look quite crummy when printed, don't be afraid to ask!).
