26. More Released about Entertainment in Universal's Diagon Alley

Universal Orlando Theme Parks has released more information about entertainment experiences that will be hosted at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley. Two shows will be exclusively featured in the park. The first is a puppeteer performance of two stories from the Tales of Beedle the Bard: "The Fountain of Fair Fortune" and "The Tale of the Three Brothers". The second show will be a musical performance by Molly Weasley's favorite "wizard rock" singer: Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees. Molly Weasley's favorite tunes, “A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love,” “You Stole My Cauldron But You Can’t Have My Heart,” and “You Charmed the Heart Right Out Of Me,” are to be performed. Thanks to LeakyNews for the heads up, pictures of the incredibly detailed puppets can be seen here at LeakyNews. LeakyNews also reported interactive experiences with a Knight Bus conductor that greets visitors upon entering Diagon Alley, much like the Hogsmeade Hogwarts Express Conductor, and exchanging Muggle money for Wizard Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts, at Gringotts to be used around both parks. Details on how currency exchange works with Wizarding money, and how it will be used, are still being worked out.

29. The Muppet Factory

My day job is in the world of high-tech. No, I’m not a brilliant engineer who designs all kinds of innovative, life-changing products. I only sell to them. For a fairly normal bloke, trying to relate to such people can lead to all kinds of challenges.

You have to understand, these are people who don’t see the light of day very often. Most of their time is spent on computers, whiteboards, and in dark laboratories concocting the next bit of technology that we normal folk can’t live without. They often spend sixteen hour days in their precious lab and forget to eat, sleep, shower, or have any useful form of human interaction. These people are completely devoid of emotion, but can chart its theoretical development in sixty-three different types of graphs. I am talking about the type who can build his own robot to maintain his house yet can’t waste enough mental energy to hit more than three of his seven belt-loops.

Now you know the kind of people I deal with on a daily basis. It can be fun. They look down on my intellect, but can’t understand even the most basic joke I throw out. When I rattle off something witty, I typically get a blank stare or an uncomfortable chuckle.

We have a small office in this world of technology. Ours is in the back corner of the building and on my trips to the lavatory, I frequently run into these geniuses – sometimes quite literally as they are too preoccupied with vast equations to look up when they walk. There is a door I walk past that leads to what I call, The Muppet Factory.

keyless-door-locks-3-225X300

I don’t know what goes on behind that door because it has one of those coded locks  with a scanner on it. I’ve tried punching all kinds of numbers on it, but it is probably some precise code that average people don’t have enough memory to retain. All I know is that the people who come in and out of it resemble cartoon characters come to life. The first one I saw was a dead ringer for Beaker. A Keystone Cop emerged one day followed by Animal. Several other characters have been spotted lately. Olive Oil works there, but we have yet to see Popeye. It is simply fascinating.

Now, when I walk down that hall, I go very slowly and sing things like, It Ain’t Easy Being Green, and Mahna Mahna to see if I can lure one of them out. No dice, thus far. They stay in their lab building more Muppets or stealing people for their evil machine that does it.

In this world of High Tech, I wonder what the goal of their Muppet Factory could be. Is this fandom run amok? Or is it a demented project to design a more colorful and aesthetically pleasing exterior for engineers and programmers? It is beyond my intellect to know, but I remain curious. So if you see people walking around who look suspiciously like cartoon characters, be wary. They my just be plotting something that we won’t understand until we are all subject to the vain whims of our new dictator, Miss Piggy.

30. Harry Potter Read-a-thon for HPA's Accio Books!

Earlier this month, the Harry Potter Alliance in Chicago had a read-a-thon for their Accio Books book drive. As many fans know, the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is an international non-profit organization, constructed by Harry Potter fans, that fights injustice using morals and themes found in the Harry Potter books. The HPA's Accio Books drive focuses on raising awareness for literacy needs world wide; in this specific event literacy needs close to home, in Chicago.

The Alliance for Awesome at Loyola sponsored the Accio Books read-a-thon in Chicago. This Accio Books supported two charities: Open Books and Reading is Fundamental. Eric Scull from MuggleCast, one of our friends at Mugglenet, opened the read-a-thon by reading the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Entertainment included Wizard Rock performances from Tonks and the Aurors, the Remus Lupins, and Seen and Unforeseen. There was a silent auction, costume contest, trivia, snitch scavenger hunt, among many other fun activities. The event weekend raised $1,571 to be split evenly between Open Books and Reading is Fundamental.

Congratulations to the Alliance for Awesome and the HPA for another successful drive, and being a force of fans for good. Hopefully there will be more future events held by the HPA, as well as the Alliance for Awesome, Loyola, to report soon.

32. The Leaky Cauldron's Menu at the Wizarding World!

Two new photos of what is to come this summer, with Orlando's new Wizarding World: Diagon Alley, have been released. These photos contain snap shots of what food will be on the menu in Diagon Alley's main restaurant: the real-life Leaky Cauldron! Tom Schroder, PR for Universal Orlando Resorts, posted two pictures, on his twitter page, of Leaky's potential lunch and dessert items that he was taste testing. The first photo shows a cheese platter, fish and chips, a "Bangers & Mash" plate, and other English foods. For dessert, the Leaky Cauldron is apparently offering a variety of cookies (blueberry and cinnamon sugar included), "Chocolate Potted Cream", "Apple Red Currant Tart", and a few more pastries and delicacies. Schroder also reminds us not to forget about ice cream, also stating in a separate tweet that Universal is working on unique flavors for Diagon Alley.

Did someone say ice cream? Our culinary team has created great special flavors - just for Diagon Alley. Brilliant!

Our culinary team has done great work...so much variety and all delicious. Beyond that, you will have to stay tuned.

Many thanks to Hypable for the tip!

34. TP Authors: Sarah Price

Sarah Price, popular author of Amish fiction, is also a contributor to the One series, which is regularly posted about on this blog. Her story, The Power of Faith, is currently available for ONLY 99 Cents with author proceeds going to a great cause. You can get it here: http://goo.gl/xhE9w

Today, she wants to share her Triangle of Blessings: Amish, Writing and Readers

I was first introduced to the Amish when I was only eight years old. It was my grandparents who took me to Lancaster County, PA. I sat between them on the front seat of their Cadillac, bouncing up and down with excitement as we passed each horse and buggy.

My grandparents came from a long line of strict Old Order Mennonites. Back in the early 1700s, our ancestors escaped persecution and travelled across the ocean to accept William Penn’s offer for free land in Pennsylvania.  I often think about that journey and how terrified they must have been. Seeing the shores of Europe disappear over the horizon, facing an uncertain future in an unknown land…how courageous they were and how unfaltering in their faith in God.

There is something magical about the Amish. In today’s world of technology, information overload and crazy schedules, there is something to be said for a people who manages to maintain a simpler way of life.  A people who takes care of each other. A people who lives for honoring God through their daily routines.  How can you not fall in love with such people? They are truly blessed.

Likewise, I consider myself a blessed person. For almost twenty-five years, I have been staying among the Amish. In the beginning, I found an Amish family that rented out an apartment over their mule shed. For several years, I would rent the apartment and travel back and forth from my home to their farm. In later years, I was introduced to an Amish woman who rented me a room in her home. Through these connections, I have been permitted the rare opportunity to straddle the fence between my current world and this of my ancestors.

There is another blessing in my life (and I believe we all have many). I have been blessed with the desire to write. Since I was a child, I wrote books. It was my passion, my dream. I love writing, telling stories that entertain and inform. It’s in my blood. I believe that a true author writes for that reason: they have a passion to write. That’s it. It’s as plain and simple as the Amish.

The beautiful thing is that I have been blessed to combine the two: my passion for writing and my passion for the Amish. It’s a marriage made in heaven, as far as I’m concerned.  Like my friend, colleague, and fellow author, Karen Anna Vogel, my knowledge of the Amish comes from first-hand experience. It allows me to write authentic books, books that are rich in true knowledge of the Amish, a special knowledge that I love to share with my readers.

That brings me to my final blessing, one that is so important to me: the readers. How fortunate it is that so many wonderful people desire to know the Amish and to learn about their faith! These readers are faced with so much stress: busy lives, illness, uncertainty, and hardship in a time of economic distress. It is such a blessing to know that, even if only for a few hours, they can slip away from this stress through the stories that I love to write.

I invite you into my world, to pick up one of the many Amish books written by wonderful authors that are available in bookstores and online, and to sit back in order to escape, even if just for a few pages.  Who knows? Maybe you, too, will find some relief from the everyday stress in your own life as you explore the world of the Amish through our eyes.

43. The Potter Trail: Edinburgh's New Harry Potter Tour

A new 90-minute Harry Potter walking tour has been created in the city of Edinburgh. As some fans may know, J.K. Rowling completed much of the Harry Potter series in Edinburgh and still lives there to this day. Because of the city's large connection to the Harry Potter series, The Potter Trail was created to take fans on a "dedicated" walking tour of sites where J.K. Rowling wrote and sites that inspired settings of the books. The tour was also organized to help support Edinburgh's status as a "World City of Literature", a title given to the city in 2004. The Potter Trail is set to launch this year during the city's annual Fringe Festival. The Potter Trail creator, Stuart Young, explains:

“I’ve always thought there was a gap in the market for Harry Potter fans. Although Harry Potter is often mentioned on other tours, there’s never been a tour dedicated to the books.

“Despite Rowling writing many of her books in Edinburgh, Potter devotees are not well catered for, with only a couple of cafes espousing their connections.

“I hope to change that with a comprehensive tour covering all the important sites, with an entertaining and interactive style.”

Important sites pertaining to the novel are set to include:

[...the] two cafes where the author sat to pen her debut book, The Elephant House and the former Nicholson’s Cafe.

Tourists will be taken into Greyfriar’s Kirkyard to view the grave of father and son Thomas Riddell – said to be the inspiration for Lord Voldemort’s ancestors and known in the books as the scene of the rebirth of the world’s most evil wizard.

Also buried in the cemetery is poet William Topaz McGonagall, who lent his surname to strict Scottish teacher Minerva McGonagall.

Around the corner, visitors will be taken to the inspiration for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, George Heriot’s School, while magical shopping street Diagon Alley is, in reality, nearby Victoria Street.

46. "How to Succeed In Business" Closing

After seven months of performances, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was handed it's final notice. The show opened in December 2010 with Daniel Radcliffe as the lead. Radcliffe's role packed the theater, and quickly recuperated the $9 million that was initially invested in the musical. Nick Jonas took over Radcliffe's role after Darren Criss, and the cast was unable to continue to bring in expected profits. CBS reports:

When it closes, the revival will have played just over 500 performances since it opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in February 2011. It quickly recouped its $9 million initial investment that December, thanks to its then-star Daniel Radcliffe.

Jonas, best known as part of the Jonas Brothers boy band, took over the lead this January and had committed to staying until at least July 1, but ticket sales took a noticeable hit. Last week, the box office took in just $368,000 out of a potential gross of $1,394,000.

47. Wizarding World Still Making Magical Profits

Nearly two years after the grand opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the theme park is still magically raising Universal profits. Orlando reports that the theme park ticket and souvenir sales have contributed to a 17.1% growth rate. The Wizarding World has helped Universal's revenue gain 5.7% in the past three months! The article goes on to say:

"Nearly two years after the Wizarding World of Harry Potter's opening, Universal parent company Comcast credits the attraction with "reliable growth" in guest spending. Operating cash flow jumped 17.1 percent to $157 million, a measure of profitability Comcast says was primarily due to higher guest spending on tickets, food and souvenirs."

49. Best response to an over-bearing fan ever

Sinclair Lewis received this letter from a lawyer in a Midwestern city:

Dear Lewis:
Have read a few of your works and would like to ask a few favors. Please send me a list of your stories, your autograph, picture, and a letter describing your life. How many children have you and their names.

Thanking you, I am
Yours very truly,
J.J. Jones, Esq.
He responded:

My Dear Jim:
There was only one thing about your nice letter that I didn’t like. It was so sort of formal. True, we have never met, and somehow I feel we aren’t likely to, but, isn’t this a democratic country? So let me call you Jim, and you call me Fatty, or any other friendly name.
Now Jim, I haven’t got a photograph of me here, but I’ll go right down to the junction and have one taken. I’m preparing a letter about my life, but it’s been a pretty long one and a bad one, and that will take me several weeks.

But in the meantime, Jim, I’m awfully interested in lawyers. Kindly send me your picture, picture of your home and office, a list of your assets and liabilities, average income per month, list of the books you have read since 1914, if any. Kindly inform me whether you have ever defended a bootlegger and why. Should be glad to have any other interesting personal information for use in a story. How do you get along with your wife? Kindly explain this in detail.

Thanking you in advance, I remain,
Yours affectionately,
Sinclair Lewis

I love this, but part of me wonders if it’s true... every mention I find of it on the web contains the same information about the sender.

50. How to Build Online Community

By Rob Eagar

If you want to build a following, especially online, the key is to position yourself as someone who is worth following. The best way to attract a large group is by becoming an object of interest, which means the ability to draw people to you by dent of your expertise or charismatic personality.

For instance, celebrities in our society, such as actors, reality TV stars, musicians, athletes, bestselling authors, and politicians, are considered objects of interest, because people are fascinated by their glamorous lifestyle, eccentric behavior, or award-winning achievements. Likewise, intellectual experts, such as scientists, doctors, lawyers, ministers, reporters, and counselors, can also be objects of interest, because of their ability to help people discover new information or overcome personal challenges.

People won’t become your fan unless you give them a clear reason. I know this sounds obvious, but it’s that’s simple. If you’re engaging in social media and struggling to build a growing community, then people probably don’t regard you as interesting. You’re lost in the mix of more appealing authors who are getting attention. So, your goal should be to magnify the best parts of your book and your author expertise. Use your strengths to make people want to stay connected with you. For example, below is a list of ways to attract a following based on the genre of books that you write:

  1. Non-fiction advice, how-to, textbooks: Deliver clear answers to common problems.
  2. Biographies, reference: Provide insight into historical or current events.
  3. Fiction, romance, chick-lit: Generate intense feelings of emotion or passion.
  4. Gift books, children’s, religious: Serve as a constant source of encouragement.
  5. Memoirs, comedy: Supply a unique sense of humor and wit.
  6. Science fiction, young adult, crime: Create a feeling of fear, wonder, or suspense.
  7. Business, political commentary: Express counter-intuitive opinions that challenge status quo.

This list is just a sample of the diverse ways that any fiction or non-fiction author could draw attention to their name and their books. I go into a lot more detail on this topic in my new book, Sell Your Book Like Wildfire. You might choose to rely on one approach build interest.
