Charlie and Lola, the brother and sister duo with wonderful British accents, are favorites in our house. My kids love watching the television series on Playhouse Disney. In the series, older brother Charlie keeps an eye on and plays with little sister Lola who is "small and very funny." They spend time doing normal, everyday kid things and the dialogue between the two is exceptionally amusing. We also own several of the Charlie and Lola series of books (both original and TV tie-ins). The original books inspired the animated TV series. Author Lauren Child created Charlie and Lola and wrote the first book titled I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato, published in 2000. If you have the time, visit Lauren Child's website and find the Charlie and Lola character page to read her fascinating "The Charlie and Lola Story." She fills in all the blanks about the books, the TV series and even tells who inspired Lola and where the idea of pink milk originated.
Several of the Charlie and Lola episodes are available on DVD. The latest release is called Charlie and Lola, Vol. 9: What Can I Wear for Halloween? The DVD includes nine episodes. Only the first episode, "What can I Wear for Halloween," focuses on the Halloween holiday. In this episode, Charlie, Lola, Marv, and Lotta proudly discuss the pumpkin they grew from seed. They plan to show it off at the school Halloween party. Lola can't decide what she wants to wear and shrugs off several of Charlie's suggestions like deep sea monster and spider. Something unfortunate happens to the pumpkin the kids grew, but in the end the "biggest, orangiest pumpkin lantern in the whole of Halloween" shines brighter than all.
Like I said, only one episode focuses on Halloween. The other episodes discuss fall and leaves, helping others, school projects, sleepovers and, of course, there's always time for pink milk. My favorite episode "I am Going to Save a Panda" covers endangered animals and extinction. Teachers could easily incorporate this episode into their lesson planning involving ecology and wildlife preservation for Endangered Species Day or World Animal Day. I also loved the mention of a game called "Conkers" that uses seeds of horse-chestnut trees strung on a string in the autumn episode titled "Everything is different and not the same." We've collected horse-chestnut seeds but I had never heard of the game until viewing this DVD. My daughter's favorite episode "But we always do it like this" is all about building sand castles and getting along with others.
The DVD menu is one of the cutest I've ever seen. When you click on the soccer ball to view the DVD, Lola blows bubbles in her pink milk...too fun! The interesting cartoon animation looks similar to the original books and uses a collage method to incorporate real photos of things like pumpkins into the cartoon. Additionally, the characters look like they are cut out of a piece of paper. All in all, (taking cue's from Lola) this is really an ever so extremely good DVD to watch with kids.

I have never seen Charlie and Lola. That said, I'll throw out a guess that Lola should be a parrot. That's the first thing I thought of. I guess if there's a theme, then Charlie could be a pirate.
Given how rich Lola's pretend world is on the show, she's bound to want a fantasy costume! I see her in a fairy costume, complete with a wand and lots of streamers and a flouncy skirt. ;) She might also like being a queen, as she fancies herself a leader. I just love that show!

The brisk, chilly air today reminded me that winter is approaching. I can feel my muscles start to tense up just thinking about the cold weather ahead. That's when I delight in comfort items - warm, snuggly blankets, thick socks, fluffy robe, soft slippers and a good book. Yoplait Delights are kind of like your favorite comfort item. And, they're so delightful even my father-in-law will eat them (though I don't think he is the target audience). Thanks to My Blog Spark, we had the chance to try out this new Yoplait Yogurt. I really wanted to put the product to the test so I purchased both the Lemon Torte and Triple Berry Crème and offered them to my in-laws when they came to visit a week ago. I told them I had bought them on sale and wanted to try them out. They both selected the Lemon Torte flavor to eat. Their reaction - they loved the yogurt treat! And so did my family. My mother-in-law commented that the yogurt tasted creamy and refreshing and she made sure to study the packaging so that she could find them in the store next time she went shopping. My kids enjoyed eating the creamy white layer on top and my husband really liked the contrast of the two different layers and the consistency of the yogurt.
Each Yoplait Delights serving contains only 100 calories, making it an ideal snack and the treat meets National Yogurt Association criteria for live and active culture yogurt. Just so you know though, the yogurt is sweetened with Sucralose and other sweetener, so if you're not a fan of those, you might not like the flavor. I'm kind of a yogurt snob and typically eat organic, vanilla yogurt. I usually can't stand the artificial taste of some yogurts, but I really did like the Lemon Torte Yoplait Delights (not so much the Triple Berry Crème, though). The word French word "parfait" means something perfect. Yoplait did a pretty good job creating an eye-pleasing, fairly delicious yogurt treat.

In celebration of Book Blogger Appreciation Week, I'm hosting a special giveaway. The book blogger's life isn't always easy. You see, lots of times we write posts and reviews and then, well, people may read them but they sure don't always comment. (Unless the review involves a giveaway). Oftentimes it appears that our hard work is all for naught, when actually that's not the case at all.
This past weekend I wrote a review for a book called Legacy by 16-year-old author Cayla Kluver. No one commented. Now it's possible you have an aversion to princesses or maybe you were all off pursuing your own knight in shining armor/lady in waiting. Or maybe not. Most likely, many of you read the review or at least glanced at it and went on to the next post, the next blog. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm guilty of lurking as well. This sounds like an interesting read. I'm not personally a fan of books that are planned as trilogies (or sequels in general) since I believe that each book should stand on its own with no further reading to get full enjoyment from the time you've already spent. I do admire that a teen wrote this book. I've dreamt of publishing my own novel since grade school and it hasn't come to fruition (yet). Congrats to her, and thanks to you for this great giveaway. I would be interested to give this novel a read.

We've all heard about them or seen them. You know, those odd little creatures with the conical hats found in gardens. Up to this point, I've never had the slightest desire to place a gnome anywhere near my home. But after reading Kaleb Nation's debut fantasy book, I just might change my mind. Maybe. It's a thought, anyway.
Of course Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse isn't completely about little gnomes. Actually it's mostly about an orphaned chap named Bran Hambric who struggles to figure out where he fits in a magical world gone awry. After a childhood of not knowing, he discovers the truth about his perplexing past, a past deeply entrenched in an evil sort of magic and a terrible secret curse.
The book begins with a prologue. A six-year-old boy named Bran turns up inexplicably, locked in a bank vault in a city called Dunce--the only city in the world that does not allow magic of any sort. No gnomes, no mages. No magic. A banker named Sewey Wilomas discovers Bran in the vault and finds himself responsible for the boy due to a Finders Keepers Law. Bran ends up living with the very annoying Wilomas family, and they treat him like dirt. A ripped note stating his name and birth date is the only clue to his past. Fast forward eight years later. Bran still lives with the Wilomases and one fateful night finds himself face-to-face with a scary creature. He learns his mother was a powerful mage that used dark magic in horrific ways, discovers the reason for the torn note and determines the meaning behind a special crescent moon necklace. Along his journey of discovery he makes a few new mage friends and meets a gnome named Polland.
Young author Kaleb Nation creatively depicts an exciting magical world in his suspenseful middle grade/YA fantasy. There's many obvious similarities between Bran Hambric and the beloved Harry Potter series--orphaned boy, magical world, an evil counterpart, unpleasant family life. But Nation has developed the city of Dunce and all the people and creatures inside and outside the city entirely from his own imagination. The scenes involving the Wilomas family in the beginning of the book bog down the story a bit, but the pace picks up when Bran learns more about magic and meets some mages and magical characters. Written using uncomplicated language, the book is sure to appeal to all those young readers that have been clamoring for Harry Potter read-a-likes. Nation makes readers chuckle with his over-the-top characters and even a few clever word plays, like measuring magical power in witts, calling those with the most, brightwitts and those with the least, dimwitts. Just so readers know, there are a number of slightly violent scenes involving guns, death and troubling dark magic in this book but nothing is especially graphic. The enticing artwork by Brandon Dorman on the cover is worth a mention and deserves a big thumbs up. The book leaves quite a few questions unanswered and Kalab Nation has plans for a sequel. I'm hoping to learn more about the gnomes and their sacred Givvyng Tree!
As part of his homeschool education, Kaleb Nation started writing the book at the age of 14 and worked on it throughout his teenage years. Currently 20 years old, his young age makes this debut book an impressive accomplishment. Highly ambitious, Kalab Nation is also a successful blogger at his popular TwilightGuy.com website.

Preschoolers are budding little scientists and see everything as a miracle. They love learning about how things work and like to discover and explore. Their curiosity about the science of everyday life should be encouraged and nurtured. Jim Henson's newest animated puppet series shown on PBS called Sid the Science Kid helps preschoolers learn the basics of science.
We've watched Sid the Science Kid on PBS since it first debuted last year. The star of the show is a high energy, microphone toting, curious preschool-aged boy named Sid. Like so many preschoolers his favorite phrase is WHY? But he doesn't just ask why, he actively searches for answers and figures everything out by asking his parents, friends, grandmother and teacher.
Each episode of the series features a different, preschool appropriate science related question. Sid spends an entire day concentrating and learning about everything that relates to that particular science concept. Every day, the show follows the same predictable order of events:
1) Sid wakes up and thinks of a question 2) Sid discusses question with his parents at breakfast 3) Sid rides to school with his mom (and sings Mom Song) 4) Sid surveys his friends (and sings Friend Song) 5) Rug Time at school 6) Super Fab Lab where they "Observe! Compare! Contrast! Describe! and write in their journals (often includes clip of real children) 7) Play time including "Good Laughternoon" joke time 8) Susie's Song 9) Back seat driving with Grandma on way home from school 10) Evening chat with family 11) Bedtime and Sid's BIG IDEA
Earlier this month, on August 4th, NCircle Entertainment released two Sid the Science DVD's, Sid the Science Kid: Change Happens and Sid the Science Kid: The Bug Club. Each of the DVDs runs about 115 minutes and each features four different episodes. We had the opportunity to review both of the DVDs. There's plenty of content for your money's worth! My daughter preferred watching Change Happens over The Bug Club. Her favorite episode out of both DVDs was the one featuring decaying and decomposing food called "My Mushy Banana." The DVDs we received included a bonus DVD with episodes from a variety of preschool shows including WordWorld, Dive Olly Dive and more.

Sid the Science Kid is one of the most educational shows for preschoolers available right now. The episodes are perfect for those with short attention spans because they are broken up into small manageable segments. My daughter especially loves all the songs and the joke time. I try to watch the episodes with my daughter so that we can talk about the science concepts discussed on the show and apply them at home. Another reason the shows gets a thumbs up from me -- the characters are ethnically diverse and multi-generational. Only a few minor complaints: Sid's chuckle gets on my nerves and Dad (a.k.a Mort) looks way too dorky and reminds me Dick Van Dyke's toy character in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The gorgeous corresponding Sid the Science PBS website is full of several episode related activities and games and even includes a comprehensive parents and teachers page for those that wish to incorporate the show's concepts into home or school studies.
Dive Olly Dive: Ship Shape Sub deserves its own time in the limelight, so I'll post a review later after I have time to sit and watch the whole DVD. The DVD released on August 4th along with the Sid the Science DVDs. I've never seen the show on TV. According to a news release, "Dive Olly Dive! follows the fun-filled underwater escapades of Olly and Beth, two young research submarines-in-training." Children learn about ocean life and ocean eco-systems through watching the animated show along with learning about friendship and teamwork.

I would love to win this for my daughter. Her favorite all time experiment was when my husband took her to work and she got to see herself on a thermal imaging camera.
The only one I can recall doing is making a few volcanoes. It's been MANY years since I was in school! My granddaughter LOVES Sid the Science Kid! Thanks.
An experiment I did with my son recently were "milk color fireworks", where we put some milk in a plate, then put drops of different food colorings in it, and then dipped a toothpick covered in dishwashing soap in each colored dots. The colors then "explode" into tiny little fireworks in the milk. Pretty cool!

I remember doing the one where we had to see the effects of Coke on bones - so we soaked a chicken bone in a can of it for a week to see what it did - it makes it brittle. We thought that was the coolest thing in 5th grade. *lol* [email protected]
My all-time favorite has always been ooblick. The mess, the feel, and the amazement at what it can do. As for favorites with my kids, since they are still young, are the ones that they spark by every day living and playing. Turning those into experiments are great. For example, my daughter loved to wander around the house finding objects and seeing if they float.
We had to do an experiment with plants. We had two groups of plants. One group we played music too the other we just let grow. The group with the music played to them grew faster and had more flowers. To this day that amazes me.
We do lots of little experiments, but my son's favorite was building volcanoes. Then we added baking soda and vinegar to see what would happen. mommastaci33(at)yahoo(dot)com

One of the first books my daughter received was the board book version of Olivia by Ian Falconer. Only a few months old at the time, she didn't really appreciate the book gift. But sometime around the age of two or three, she became quite fond of the lively little girl pig with a big imagination. We've since read nearly all the picture books in the Olivia series. Toddlers and preschoolers love Olivia so it was no surprise to me when Nick Jr. started airing an animated television series earlier this year based on the bestselling book series. Just last week on August 11, 2009, Nickelodeon released an Olivia DVD showcasing some of the original TV episodes (and a couple of brand new ones).
For those not familiar with Olivia, she's an adventure loving 6-3/4-year-old pig with a super vivid imagination. Olivia dreams big, always imagining herself as larger than life characters. She has two younger brothers, Ian and William. Sibling rivalry and jealousy are main themes in the episodes, and Olivia calls her little brother Ian, "little bother." A few of the episodes show Olivia attending school, competing with her friend Francine and relying on friend Julian. The catchy theme song is an attention getting, jazzy ditty - O-LI-VI-A! Animated shorts play between the episodes.
My daughter enjoyed all the episodes, but she really, really likes the brand new episode, "Olivia Acts Out." Olivia wants to star as "Queen of the Fairies" in her school play, but instead her teacher casts her in the role of "Cow #2." To her disappointment she only has one boring line, "Moo." She makes the most of her moo with a performance that is over the moon. I loved Olivia's clever "Rules of Life." (Rule #5: "Not everyone can wear red, especially when you're pink.")
Viewers should know that although the episodes are based on the Olivia books and include some phrases from the books, they are entirely new plots not seen in the book series. Also, the producers decided to move beyond Falconer's unique minimalist colors of red, white and black by showing the characters and settings in full color. However, Olivia still wears her signature red outfits! I think kids will appreciate the animated episodes more if they've been previously introduced to Olivia's character by reading the book series. Later this year Simon & Schuster plans to publish several Olivia TV Tie-in books.

One thing I'm going to need this week is a lot of energy. We'll be busy, busy, busy! My grandfather turns 90 (amazing energy!), my nephew turns 1 (another big milestone!) and we're driving to Chicago for BlogHer and also plan to visit Museum of Science and Industry and The Field Museum. And my digital camera will accompany me to all those events. Thanks to Energizer and that pink bunny, at least my camera won't lack in energy even though I may be dragging!
Around here it seems just about every little gadget and toy needs batteries! Energizer knows all about energy and energy needs. Their line of rechargeable batteries and charging systems caters to on the go families. I just briefly walked around our den and counted no less than 10 battery powered toys on the floor. That is the tip of the iceberg. We go through quite a few batteries, needless to say. Here are the top battery hogs in our home: our flashlights, the digital camera, my daughter's LeapFrog Tag reader, my son's Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium, the kid's electronic music keyboard and the Brio battery-powered train engine. They all require different battery sizes.
Energizer recently sent me a variety of chargers and batteries to review. The first one we tried out is the Family Charger. Geez, I should of had one of these chargers a long time ago. It charges all sizes in multiple combinations, up to 8 AAA, 8 AA, 2 9V, 4 C and 4 D. The charge status indicator lets you know when charging is completed. We use AA batteries the most, so the ability to charge 8 at a time is certainly useful. While we've only had the charger and batteries a month and can't verify all the claims as far as durability and how long the batteries keep charge in storage (manufacturer claims up to 6 months), what we can attest to is that the rechargeable batteries work as good if not better than the ordinary alkaline AA batteries. Plus, the charger is good for the environment. I'm so happy I don't have to dispose of as many batteries as before.
The Energizer Family Charger suggested retail price is $29.99 (batteries not included). The charger is best suited for Energzier NiMH batteries. Charge time varies depending on the battery size and how many batteries need charging. It takes about three hours to charge 4 AA batteries and six hours to charge 8 AA batteries. (Refer to Energizer website for complete instructions and product details.) I know that fast chargers are all the rage, but here's one interesting tidbit I learned by visiting the website FAQ page: "fast chargers can limit the NiMH battery lifetime to 150 charges while slower chargers can prolong the cycle life to more than 500 charges."

I love battery chargers. I had one that went with my first ever digital camera, but when the camera became obsolete I got rid of it. I'd love to win this Energizer one, though, to help power my extra-and-for-special-occasions-alarm-clock. I only set it when there will be dire, horrible consequences if I don't wake up on time (less than half of the time, I swear!). And it's good to have a battery-powered back-up in case of power outages.
I'm always using batteries, but I guess the TV remote is the one that is used the most b/c everyone in the house uses it...then it would be a c.d. player most likely. I'm sure there are a ton more but I'm blanking on everything. LOL
I've been needing a charger! I had one and I left if in the hospital when my sister had my nephew!(almost 2 yrs ago!) I would love to have it to charge the batteries for my camera!

I'd use this to recharge batteries for two things- a little remote control fire truck that belongs to my son- great fun, but boy does it eat batteries! And my pocket digital video camera, also a big battery hog.
My preschool daughter is at the perfect age to completely appreciate and enjoy the Ni Hao, Kai-lan animated series. We've watched quite a few episodes on Nick Jr. since the show first aired last year. The series features a five-year-old Chinese-American girl named Kai-lan and introduces preschoolers to Mandarin language and Chinese culture.
Much like the Dora series, Kai-lan goes on small adventures with her animal friends, learns valuable lessons along the way and encourages viewer interaction. Kai-lan depends upon her grandfather, Yeye, for guidance and support. Kailan's animal friends include: Rintoo, the tiger; Tolee, the koala; Hoho, the monkey; and Lulu, a pink rhino. Besides the bilingual aspect, the show also teaches kindness, compassion, and how to deal with feelings and emotions. One of the standard messages is "Try it! Because you might like it!" My daughter has amazingly picked up a number of phrases including "Ni Hao," the term for hello (also the show's title) and thank you, "xie xie." Kai-lan's large eyes and catchy songs appeal to preschoolers and the background graphics are bright, colorful and slightly abstract like a fun children's video game.
A new Kai-lan DVD released on July 14th called Ni Hao Kai-Lan: Kai-Lan's Great Trip to China. The DVD runs 96 minutes and includes three separate episodes: a double-length feature episode Kai-Lan's Trip to China, and two additional episodes Rain Or Shine and The Ant Playground. We had the chance to preview the DVD before it released, much to the delight of my daughter. She has watched it a few times and really, really likes the trip to China segment. Kai-lan's aunt, Gu Nai Nai, invites Kai-lan and her friends to China to learn more about the Chinese culture. During their visit, they meet a baby panda that likes to eat watermelon. (Preschoolers love baby pandas ... at least mine does because the baby panda was a huge hit here.) In the other segments Kai-lan has fun in the rain and helps build a swing for some ants. My only complaints: I'm not sure what to make of Mr. Sun's sun fuzzies. They are just strange. The special features section only includes one feature, a music video "We're Going to China." I do wish that the DVD included a term and pronunciation guide in the special features so that it could be used more effectively as a teaching tool. Overall though, we really enjoyed the DVD.

My 4 year old and 1 year old both love the show and it amazes me just how much of the language they pick up on. If I say "Ni Hao" to my one year old, he'll respond by saying "hi" back! nscandurro(at)cox(dot)net

I love that I can find an asian role model for my 3 yr old on tv and that the program teaches her to express emotions and the importance of empathy. It would be great to have this dvd for her bc she likes to repeat the Chinese words and I get so excited when she does. I speak Cantonese a bit, so I also learn mandarin along with her. Having a relatively cheap Asian doll available in regular stores[just found out they're available now and more are coming out in the fall] was the highlight of my night.

My daughter,Maya, loves this show. I even watch myself.....not only do I like it, but I also need to know the words Maya learns. Otherwise, she'll make up words and say they're in "chinese".
I really enjoy the show with my daughter - there is always some character trait that seems to be the focus of the show. I like that....along with the problem solving!
What kind of music did you listen to as a kid? I bet it wasn't music specifically marketed toward children. I'm a fan of "all-ages music," songs with a broad appeal. I like to introduce my children to music that teaches the importance of diversity and garners appreciation of different genres. Albums that feature lively, upbeat rhythms are also tops here.

I didn't know Stonyfield Farm products existed until I after my daughter was born. I saw their YoBaby yogurt in the store while searching for some beginner foods for my infant girl and brought some home. We've been hooked on Stonyfield Farm ever since. Or maybe not. Most likely, many of you read the review or at least glanced at it and went on to the next post, the next blog. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm guilty of lurking as well. But, I'll share a little secret with you. I tend to pay more attention to the comments on my non-giveaway posts because the volume isn't as high. 
isn't completely about little gnomes. Actually it's mostly about an orphaned chap named Bran Hambric who struggles to figure out where he fits in a magical world gone awry. I've never seen the show on TV. According to a news release, "Dive Olly Dive! follows the fun-filled underwater escapades of Olly and Beth, two young research submarines-in-training." Children learn about ocean life and ocean eco-systems through watching the animated show along with learning about friendship and teamwork.

My kids love Charlie and Lola, what a great giveaway! I asked my daughter and she said Lola should be a princess (of course) and Charlie should be Bumble Bee (that's what her brother is being)

I have never seen Charlie and Lola. That said, I'll throw out a guess that Lola should be a parrot. That's the first thing I thought of. I guess if there's a theme, then Charlie could be a pirate.

Given how rich Lola's pretend world is on the show, she's bound to want a fantasy costume! I see her in a fairy costume, complete with a wand and lots of streamers and a flouncy skirt. ;) She might also like being a queen, as she fancies herself a leader. I just love that show!
