26. Archaia to publish Marjane Satrapi’s The Sigh

The Sigh Archaia to publish Marjane Satrapis The Sigh
Archaia has just announced a November release for the English language version of Marjane Satrapi’s LE SIGH, which will be published in English as THE SIGH. Satrapi’s PERSEPOLIS remains one of the all-time best selling graphic novels — in recent years, she’s concentrated on directing, as opposed to cartooning, with a live-action version of her book CHICKEN WITH PLUMS currently prepping for release.

THE SIGH was originally published in French as LE SOUPIR in 2004.

Award-winning graphic novel publisher, Archaia Entertainment, has set a November release date for the English-language version of The Sigh, a fable from Marjane Satrapi, acclaimed author behind the international bestseller, Persepolis, it was announced today by Mark Smylie, Chief Creative Officer of Archaia Entertainment.

Following its debut in France and Spain, U.S. fans of Satrapi’s work have waited patiently for The Sigh to arrive in the U.S. The Sigh follows Rose, one of three daughters of a rich merchant who always brings gifts for his girls from the market. One day Rose asks for the seed of a blue bean, but her father fails to find one for her. She lets out a sigh in resignation, and her sigh attracts the Sigh, a mysterious being that brings the seed she desired to the merchant. But every debt has to be paid, and every gift has a price, and the Sigh returns a year later to take the merchant’s daughter to a secret and distant palace.

The Sigh will be presented as a 6” x 8” hardcover, featuring 56 pages of text and beautifully hand-drawn color illustrations. The Sigh will release with a retail price of $10.95.

“The Sigh is a timeless fairytale that promises to capture the imaginations of readers both young and old,” said Smylie. “Marjane is one of those rare writers who has the ability to connect with readers on a global scale and we are proud to bring this story to the U.S.”

Following the publication of Persepolis, a dramatic illustrated account of her experiences in Iran during the Islamic Revolution, Marjane Satrapi has captured the hearts of people throughout the world. Along with The Sigh, her other projects include her second feature film Chicken with Plums. Based on her graphic novel of the same name, Chicken with Plums is currently causing a stir with attendees at the Venice Film Festival.

Drawing upon its past success with publishing foreign graphic novels for English-speaking readers, such as The Killer, Okko and The Secret History, Archaia is positioning The Sigh as the vanguard of a new wave of foreign titles it will be publishing in the next several months.

28. Archaia switches to PGW, publishes APES

201105231423 Archaia switches to PGW, publishes APES
Archaia is making some moves, both with a new distributor — PGW — and its first illustrated novel, Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes.

Buried in a PR on the Ape book is the news that Archaia is leaving Diamond for PGW, which already distributes Cartoon Books. PGW distributes over 100 independent publishers, so picking up a few GN publishers makes sense. And Archaia’s new books-only plan is also a good bit for a books-only distributor.

As for the APE book, it’s a new retelling of untold tales of what went on in the original film, and features art by a bevy of stars, and a cover by Jim Steranko–SCORE. Already remade in 2001, a NEW PLANET OF THE APES film is due this year starring James Franco, Frieda Pinto and Tom Felton.

Written by celebrated author, artist, and digital producer Andrew E.C. Gaska, and adapted from a story by Gaska, Rich Handley, Christian Berntsen and Erik Matthews, Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes recounts what happened between the scenes of the classic 1968 Twentieth Century Fox film, centering on the astronaut John Landon, Chimpanzee scientists Dr. Milo and Dr. Galen, and Gorilla Security Chief Marcus. The book contains 30 full-color paintings and another 19 black and white illustrations, including a cover by legendary artist Jim Steranko (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and interior art from some of the top talent in the industry, including renowned book cover painter Ken Kelly (Conan, KISS), Joe Jusko (Savage Sword of Conan, Tarzan), Sanjulian (Eerie, Vampirella), Mark Texiera (Ghost Rider, Wolverine), Leo Leibelman (Heavy Metal), Matt Busch (Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica), Brian Rood (Indiana Jones, Star Wars), Tom Scioli (Godland), David Hueso (G.I. Joe: Storm Shadow) and newcomers Dan Dussault (Critical Millennium) and Dirk Shearer (Mice Templar).

Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes marks an expansion of Archaia’s successful collaboration with Gaska, following up on his science fiction comic epic, Critical Millennium: The Dark Frontier, which has received early critical acclaim.

“It means a lot to have this project be set for release and we cannot think of a better partner to have than Archaia with their outstanding production value,” said Gaska. “It’s been a great working partnership with 20th Century Fox and an honor to contribute to this legendary franchise.”

Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes also marks Archaia’s first venture into prose books.

“We’re very excited about our first foray into prose fiction publishing, particularly being able to work with a brilliant creative talent in Drew Gaska and a storied franchise like Planet of the Apes. I’m a huge fan of the original film and Conspiracy is a great example of an author playing successfully in an established narrative canon. We are very excited to introduce this extraordinary science fiction release across the book trade and genre markets and look forward to Conspiracy emerging as one of the year’s most talked-about titles,” said Mark Smylie, CCO of Archaia.

30. Archaia partners with Relativity for IMMORTALS GN

IMMORTALS is a movie due this winter featuring Henry Cavill, Frieda PInto, Mickey Rourke and more in a story based on the greek myths of the Titans and directed by Tarsem Singh. Color us curious! To launch the film, Archaia is partnering for the comics tie-in prequel, with a stellar line=up of talent. PR below.

Relativity Media and graphic novel publisher Archaia Entertainment, LLC have formed a publishing partnership to produce and publish a hardcover graphic novel anthology based upon Relativity’s upcoming epic motion picture Immortals, starring Henry Cavill (Superman: Man of Steel), Luke Evans (Robin Hood), Kellan Lutz (Twillight), Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), and Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2).

Archaia will release the Immortals graphic novel in September, serving as a precursor to the 3-D motion picture, which releases worldwide on November 11, 2011. The graphic novel will expand upon the film’s key characters and events through a series of original tales written and illustrated by some of the top names in comics, including David Mack (Kabuki), Ron Marz (Witchblade), Dennis Calero (Dark Tower) and Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night). The graphic novel will be published through Archaia’s Black Label division, a publishing pipeline dedicated to working alongside creative professionals within the entertainment industry eager to launch and expand their brands in the publishing world.

“We could not be more proud to form our creative partnership with Archaia, a publisher that has successfully earned industry-wide acclaim for its commitment to quality and fans of genre entertainment. Archaia possesses all of the creative resources required to perfectly capture the film’s artistic and narrative essence,” said artistic and narrative essence,” said Peter Adee, President, Theatrical Marketing &Distribution, Relativity Media .

The Relativity-Archaia partnership was facilitated by Joe LeFavi of Quixotic Transmedia, who spearheads business development for Archaia’s Black Label division. “We are thrilled to have found such an amazing partner in Relativity. Working closely with the film’s creative team, we are working hard to expand upon the mythology and reach a level of quality worthy of such a visionary storyteller as the film’s director, Tarsem Singh. We are honored that Relativity chose Archaia to introduce fans across the globe to such a rich and visually stunning world,” said LeFavi, who will also serve as executive editor on the graphic novel.

Archaia will hold a panel at the WonderCon in San Francisco, CA on Saturday, April 2 from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM in Room 220 of the Moscone Center South to celebrate their collaboration with Relativity Media on Immortals, and share more details about their creative team and special promotions surrounding the book’s release.  Later that afternoon, members of the cast will also be on hand to debut exclusive footage and host a panel discussion at 4:00 PM in the Main Hall.

Directed by Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) and written by Charles Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides, Immortals also stars Stephen Dorff (Public Enemies) and John Hurt (Hellboy). Relativity Media is distributing the 3-D epic worldwide. In the UK, Australia, and certain other territories, distribution is in association with Universal Pictures International. In Immortals, the ruthless King Hyperion (Rourke) leads his bloodthirsty army on a murderous rampage across Greece to find a deadly weapon that will destroy humanity. A mortal chosen by Zeus named Theseus (Cavill) must lead the fight against Hyperion and his evil a

31. Preview: AN ELEGY FOR AMELIA JOHNSON

amelia_johnson.jpg
What does a 22-year-old Jeopardy winner do with his winnings

?

Of course, he writes a graphic novel about a 30-year-old woman dying of cancer and the effect she has on those around her.

Or at least that’s what Andrew Rostan did. While comics dealing with cancer have usually been true life tales — Mom’s Cancer or Our Cancer Year — AN ELEGY FOR AMELIA JOHNSON takes a more unusual tack, following the two best friends of a dying woman — a slightly egotistical documentary director and a self-absorbed journalist– as they journey to bring her last words to the people she cares about. But if you think this is going to be a weepy about a saintly sick person…you are wrong.

Drawn by recent SCAD grad Dave Valeza with Kate Kasenow, the emotional, direct story gets a boost from the clean, expressive art. You don’t need fancy characters to tell a story, just the right characters.

Publisher Archaia is very high on AMELIA JOHNSON for 2011, and it’s alreadygetting some good reviews

like this one from Jill Pantozzi:

I won’t disguise the fact that An Elegy for Amelia Johnson is a very heartbreaking book. As a person living with a degenerative disease, it hit very close to home and I cried several times while reading it. Obviously it will make anyone consider their own mortality. It makes you reflect on what people would say about you if you were close to death. Would they say nice things? Bad things? Would they have anything to say at all? But it also manages to put a positive spin on the ending of one life by showing what that could mean for the future of everyone else.

Thanks to our friends at Archaia for providing this 14-page preview. AN ELEGY FOR AMELIA JOHNSON comes out in March.

Warning… looking at what appears so far on BarnesAndNoble.com, the rest of 2011 is going to be just as amazing! Click this link

to discover more!  (Sweet Kirby Crackle! Corto Maltese, in English, from Rizzoli?!) Better start shopping for bookshelves now.

Since this list takes a lot of work, I will not be adding hyperlinks to the publishers or BN.com.  Most browsers allow you to search directly just by highlighting a term, or feel free to cut and paste into whichever web browser you prefer.

As always, I work for Barnes & Noble, but do not speak for them.  These are titles which caught my interest, and are worth a closer work.  I have not read any of these books (perhaps a comic here or there) so do not endorse any specific title on this list.  My tastes are not yours, so please recommend other titles below in the comments!  Also, the information below is subject to change.  Covers, publication dates, prices, formats… all data are subject to changes.

33. A Month of Previews: The Return of the Dapper Men

RotDM Cover.jpg
This is an experiment that will either get some good comics some good exposure…or melt our bandwidth! Every day it seems we get a preview of a comic that is worthy of some attention and exposure. So for the next 30 days we’re going to try to post one a day. Please, share via Facebook or retweet or link or whatever.

We kick things off with a dandy: Return of the Dapper Men by James McCann and Janet Lee. If you’ve been out on the convention trail you may have seen Lee’s incredibly collage artwork, sculpted from thick, heavy blocks of wood. Transporting the original art takes super strength. But beyond her stunning imagery there’s a sweet fantasy story by McCann that touches on classic themes and images of children’s literature while giving it its own unique spin.

Archaia just made the first 15 pages available for preview, and without further ado — here they are.

34. Nice Art: DAPPER MEN pin-up by John Tyler Christopher

JohnTylerChristopherZoe.jpg
RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN is a very unusual-looking graphic novel by Jim McCann and Janet Lee that comes out later this year — Lee’s wooden board collage art has been quite a conversation topic on the convention circuit this year. Prior to the book’s debut, McCann has released pin-up art; here’s one by illustrator John Tyler Christopher.

rotdmcoverpreviewssm.jpg
The cover for RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN by Jim McCann and Janet Leehas just been released. If you’ve ever seen Lee’s art in person, you know it is fantastic multi-level mixed media, created on thick pieces of plywood — crazy. We’ve never seen a lettered page but the story itself looks wild as well.
